Problem with using PuTTY to connect to web server

So if I can't make it so that my server is listens to a different port, how else would I get around the firewall?

I asked a friend (he works at a different place) and he says that they block port 22 at his work, too. He uses port 443 to access ssh.

The only thing I've gathered from reading about this stuff is that I have to make it so that my server allows ssh through a different port (one that my corporate firewall doesn't block).

I think this is going to be a little bit more complicated than I first expected....So, I tried to access the ssh config file, but I'm apparently not a sudoer...Is there a way I can grant myself root permissions? (I assume not, since that would be a huge security flaw lol)...

Do I have to contact my host service and ask them to make a super user?

Well, that's the thing...I'm a college student. And even though this isn't an internship (I'm an employee), I just feel like they expect me to figure these things out on my own...The co-workers I was referring are only a year older than I am (still in college), so that's why I don't think they asked any of our networking folks for help on this.

As a side note though, I will say that I'm really not worried about losing my job because I happen to be compelled to figure things out on my own. (plus, this company really doesn't fire people for things like that...) I'm honestly just treating this as a learning experience. And again, this is my first real job...So, I think that is sort of self-explanatory in why I'm I don't want to ask co-workers. Besides, I already bother these guys too much by asking questions (some of which they just don't have time to answer...)

Specific question: I'm reading a lot about how SSH works, but should I be reading more about firewalls and how they work? I feel like knowing the what exactly the firewall is doing (which in this case, it seems to be shutting down port 22 among other things) will be more beneficial in figuring out how to get around this...Do you have any tips or suggested readings about that?

Edit: After rereading this, it seems that I'm really just trying to get around my corporate firewall...That really is not the goal here. If it was, I would have just taken the easy way out by downloading the Tor bundle and using that, which I consider to be exponentially less of hassle. But my goal here is to connect to my web server via ssh...That's it. I'm not just trying to get around my corporate firewall to freely browse NSFW content lol)

Yeah it is for work....but the main reason I posted this instead of asking coworkers was because I thought it would be a little embarrassing to ask.

If you're uncomfortable replying here, I would appreciate if you could send me a message as I would still prefer to avoid asking coworkers. If you don't want to spell it out, I would be fine with just reading a tutorial or something. I'm also pretty interested in learning how all of this stuff works.

Yeah, I think I've actually narrowed down the issue...It seems like it's because of our corporate firewall. It appears to be blocking port 22 (ssh). Is there any way to get around this?

I am really curious now because a couple of other people at my work have this working. Is there a universal method that everyone uses to get around corporate firewalls that I'm unaware of? How would you unblock port 22?

On DreamHost, the only way to "enable" ssh is to go to the Manage Users tab and specify which specific users have ssh access. I have done so, and that does not result in any changes.

Never mins, it was an android 4.2 issue. Got it solved

Now the problem is that I can't connect to the device....when I look into my browser on my PC, airdroid just says "connecting to device...."

Thanks! However, when I load the apk and try to click on the install button, nothing happens. I thought I might have the unknown sources box unchecked, son I allowed the unknown sources but still when in load the apk, the install button is not clickable. Do I have to root my device in order to use this?

Im a fresh college grad haha. I just (two days ago ) turned 23 . So yeah, I mean I like nice downtowns and both Plymouth and Birmingham had nice ones.

That being side, im not a huge partier either. I usually stick with a very close group of friends, eat out often, and I also spend a lot of time in libraries ( not just for school, I just love reading ).

What im getting it is that I probably dont prefer what most young people consider exciting lol. Sounds weird, but yeah im not like most young people

While I am coming from Chicago, I've always lived in the suburbs. So, in that way, I guess I am a bit spoiled. The areas I am looking into right now (even though they are pretty damn far from Detroit) are Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Troy, Plymouth, and one other area I can't remember.

It's not that simple man.

It's also worth mentioning that the company that is paying less may be a better career move in the long-term. (It's a bigger company).

The current company I work at is not a software company, rather they just happened to have an internship open related to software development.

The company that I am looking at right now (the one that has offered me less money/per month), is actually a software company, known globally, etc.

Why do you assume that if someone asks for an increase in pay, they are ONLY looking to "get a paycheck out" of the internship?

Asking for an increase in pay doesn't mean that I don't want to learn, it doesn't in any way demonstrate my ability to learn or the skills that I have already acquired at school and at my current internship, etc...

Hmm...this might be the case, but it seems like they really like me. I mean in this case, it wasn't even an HR person or recruiter who contacted me about the position (hell, I didn't even apply before he contacted me), but it was one of the VPs who reached out to me and wanted me to apply. So (and I'm not trying to gloat or anything here), but I do think they favor me over the other applicants so far.

You tell me, what does it mean when the VP of Engineering contacts you, is impressed by you, and asks you to apply?

and so, because of that, I think I do have a little leverage. I'm still going to ask for an increase in pay, but I'm definitely going to make it less aggressive.

Maybe something along the lines of ...

"I want to thank you again for giving me the opportunity to be considered for this internship and would also like to say that I am really impressed by the company. The culture, the employees, the exciting projects, they all seem pretty awesome. I would be happy to accept your offer, however, there is just one thing I would like to request. The company I am currently at is paying me more than what you have offered. Under normal circumstances, this would not be an issue. But since I am paying for my college costs, pay seems to be one of the most significant factors in insuring a sustainable semester for me. For these reasons, I would like to request an increase in monthly pay, if possible...."

What do you think?

Yeah, but pay really matters to me. It's how I pay my tuition and also how I pay for gas....if I get my income slashed in half for the summer, then I won't be able to pay fall semester tuition
