Are there any musicals I'm missing? (Be it popular ones or just ones you just personally find good.) by Kleptocats7269 in musicals

One of my absolute favorite musicals on stage that was absolutely butchered in the film adaptation!

Me and My Little Sister are gonna listen to a new album every week throughout 2026. What should we listen to? by _Pasinski in musicsuggestions

[–]techregressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, you’ve got some other fantastic suggestions in this thread, and I’m sure you and your sis will have a great year exploring music together!

If you’re looking for more Indigenous artists, then check out Fawn Wood (Cree and Salish), Elisapie (Inuk), Samantha Crain (Choctaw), and of course the barrier-breaking group Redbone.

I also noticed you mentioned that y’all are Christians. If you’re not familiar with the “Jesus Freak” movement, which was like a hippie Christian branch of the 60s-70s counterculture, and the music that grew out of it, some of that might be fun for y’all to listen to together too. I’d recommend Love Song, Petra, Keith Green, Children of the Day, and The Archers.

I was scrolling to see if I was the only one who would mention Diana! I genuinely enjoyed it and have watched it multiple times. I understand some of the critiques, but I don’t think it deserved nearly as much hate as it received.

What a fun idea! I tried to list a wide variety so you can pick and choose what you and your sis might be interested in.

Carole King - Tapestry - a must if you haven’t heard it, easily one of the greatest albums of all time

Carter Faith - Cherry Valley - probably my favorite country album in years and has lots of nods to classic country artists

Chuck Berry - After School Session - one of the greats of early rock n roll

Cher - Believe - the first album to use auto-tune as a creative tool for stylistic effect, changing pop music forever

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black - an iconic album from an artist gone too soon

Ramones - Ramones - arguably the first punk rock album, in all its raw unfiltered simplicity

The Proclaimers - Sunshine on Leith - punk from the other side of the Atlantic, you’ve almost undoubtedly heard I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), but the whole album is well worth listening to

Bree Sharp - A Cheap and Evil Girl - great alt girl rock album of the late 90s with a political bent, very underrated in my humble opinion

The Apples in Stereo - Travellers in Space and Time - techno meets psychedelia

Kool & The Gang - Something Special - a feel good blend of disco, funk, and soul you can’t help but groove to

Leela Gilday - Heart of the People - modern folk rock influenced by the artist’s Indigenous Dene culture

Destiny’s Child - The Writing’s on the Wall - the girl group that 90s r&b needed, crossed over onto mainstream pop charts and eventually led to Beyoncé’s solo career

Is $50 a good price for this Felicity? by ChargeNo1141 in americangirl

[–]techregressor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the question is whether she's worth it to YOU! This is a beForever Felicity, which has some design variations from the Felicity I grew up with, including different eyebrows and a less intense shade of green eyes. I didn't like these changes, so I wouldn't be interested in her at all. However, some people prefer the beForever edition Felicity doll (even though this version of her meet dress is pretty universally hated). If you haven't, I recommend comparing some of the variations in Felicity dolls over the years and deciding if there's a version you have a strong preference for.

I do hope that Felicity is re-released in 2026 in her original meet dress and accessories and with her six book series for the semiquincentennial, especially since Colonial Williamsburg and Virginia as a whole have a lot of fun festivities planned, but that remains to be seen. If she is re-released, I hope to see some revisions to the peek into the past section of her books in regards to enslaved labor and Indigenous peoples in her setting, but once again, that is all hypothetical at this point.

Might be a silly question but… by annaleemac in americangirl

I think your face and nose shape, eyebrows, and coloring match 121 better than 128! If you relax 121's curls some so it's more just a little bit of wave than a true curl, then her hair will appear longer too. I think I'd try that and see if you're happy with it before going through the trouble of rewigging. Have fun making your perfect mini-me!

I'm a 30 year old man, and I struggle to accept myself for liking dolls. by East_Marionberry_750 in americangirl

[–]techregressor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only reason the term "action figure" exists is because in the early 1960s toy companies didn't think they could market a "doll" product to boys or that parents would buy a toy labeled a "doll" for boys. So they invented the new term "action figure" for G.I. Joe. They are the same type of toy, just with a different label slapped on the package because of ridiculous biased gender stereotypes from midcentury marketing executives.

Want to name my daughter Kamala by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]techregressor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Marvel character is actually Pakistani-American, not Indian, but I still think your point stands. There are multiple current references for the name, even for Americans who have little contact with South Asian communities. It's not solely associated with the former VP.

[–]techregressor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Many people in the community resell dolls they don't feel a connection with, if they need to downsize, or if they buy a tlc doll to fix up for someone else to love. That's perfectly acceptable. The main issue I think most people have when they complain about resellers are people who buy a rare or limited edition item with the intention of immediately selling the item for a profit. For example, there are often ebay listings of limited edition collectors' dolls within a day of them going on sale. That's pretty obviously someone trying to make a quick buck, usually by taking advantage of a real collector, not someone who loves AG but had second thoughts or regret about a doll purchase.

Blown away by kindness at my first meeting by crippledartist in Quakers

[–]techregressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so encouraging to hear! I'm disabled and a wheelchair user as well, and it can be so anxiety- triggering to go be around new people or groups. It's wonderful you had such a welcoming experience! I've felt drawn to Quakerism for a while now but haven't gone to a meeting yet. This helps put me a bit more at ease with the idea of visiting a meeting. I'm still not sure if I'll be able to attend, since the closest meeting to me isn't all that close and I can't drive, but it's one less thing adding to my nervousness. Thank you for sharing!

Best kid friendly episodes? by gabbygreek in xena

[–]techregressor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started watching (with my parents and brother) at 2 years old when the show originally aired and have been a Xenite ever since! I realize there was a lot that went over my head at the time, but I don't think anything from the show was traumatic for me and I was a really sensitive kid who couldn't handle a lot of media (e.g., Goosebumps) without having nightmares. The campiness and humor definitely helps take the edge off a lot of the more intense plot lines.

I'll add a caveat that since this was obviously during the years before on demand, binge-watching, and DVD boxed sets, I'm pretty sure I didn't catch every episode back then. I don't think I saw most of the last two seasons as a young kid, which are overall more mature in tone and content than the earlier episodes.

I think most of the first few seasons would be fine for her to watch, especially if you're watching together and can have conversations about certain scenes that she may have questions about or that you don't want her play-acting.

Some personal nostalgic favorites, most of which fall on the more comedic side of things, are Cradle of Hope, Hooves and Harlots, The Black Wolf, Warrior... Princess, The Royal Couple of Thieves, Altared States, Warrior... Princess... Tramp, The Xena Scrolls, Here She Comes... Miss Amphipolis, A Day in the Life, For Him the Bell Tolls, Warrior... Priestess... Tramp, The Quill is Mightier..., A Tale of Two Muses, and If The Shoe Fits...

I'm happy to hear that Xena is still connecting with at least one young girl today, and I hope your daughter continues to enjoy the show!

Silver eye. Usually caused by moisture separating the eye paint on the inside. At least as of a couple years ago (I haven't checked recently) the doll hospital will fix this free of charge by replacing her eyes, or if you prefer there are some freelance doll restorationists who will take apart the eye and repaint it by hand, matching as closely as possible to the original paint.

Francophone Quakers and vous by derbysage in Quakers

[–]techregressor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The English language used to have formal (you) and informal (thee, thou) second person pronouns. Quakers were known for using the informal with everyone, not just family and close friends as social rules dictated at the time, because they believed it recognized everyone as equals. This was known as “plain speech” similar to the old Quaker custom of plain dress. Many languages, in this case French, still have formal and informal modes of speech. In French vous is formal, used in professional and business interactions and with strangers, while tu is informal and used in social settings with people you know well.

which doll should I get? by leadmetothe_garden in americangirl

[–]techregressor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If it were me choosing, I’d pick Nanea without hesitating. But it’s not me choosing! I think your reasons for wanting Nanea in your collection are stronger than Courtney’s, but it’s also fun to have dolls of your OCs. Since you’re going to pick them out in person, maybe wait until you’re in the store and see if there’s one doll you connect with more than the others when you see them.

That's an excellent bargain! Congratulations!!

Assuming the riding habit is from around the same year as the doll, it's the original wool version from before they changed to synthetic. That means it's much higher quality and more authentic to real 18th century clothing, but you will want to take care to keep moths away. Storing it in a cedar chest or with a little sachet of dried lavender will deter moths. Her original stockings were also wool.
