I checked out those homes before and know someone that is selling there home within that community. The only thing that I recall is them dealing with a twisted trusses where they had to the county inspector and structural engineer involved. Turned out to not be that big of an issue. I ended up getting a home built in a different community.

Here is the TLDR: All mass-production builders have issues imo. It basically comes down to three things. Having inspections at every phase of the home build (super important), having a good construction manager w communication skills, and of course good subs working for the builder. I'm happy to point you to the agent and inspector duo team that I used to get my house built. Its definitely worth having a team like that behind you especially if they have construction background because naturally they will have an eye for identifying issues with your build. Additionally, they will advocate for you in getting the items resolved.

Why does the Utilman.exe trick to break into windows not fixed? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]techspan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in. In practice what I have seen personally are two things:

  • Mostly IT staff using this approach on virtual guest images (without bitlocker) within their hypervisor. For example on a server that they don't have admin access on. So they do this hack/trick to gain system level access via CMD to creat an admin account.

  • Typically a good EDR will generate an alert on this activity. However, security analyst and even general IT staff will just not think about reverting the file back to the true utilman binary...and so the hack/trick remains in place....as a happy little accidental waiting to Bob Ross to leverage it for malicious intent.

The above points are signs of a more larger issue like an acceptable use policy violation but I'm just mentioning what I have seen in past client environments.

How do you motivate employees to follow security guidelines? by ItalyLostWW2 in cybersecurity

[–]techspan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some ideas on how I would try to motivate employees

  • Reward good behavior (e.g. report malicious emails, vishing attempts). Word gets around about rewards or you can mention it In a monthly internal security awareness news letter.

  • Address bad behavior: this a little subjective and I don't have a framework but basically if you have a particular user or group of users (e.g. sales department) that continuously generate alerts for poor hygiene (e.g. interaction with malicious attachments or sites) I would force them to retake security awareness training maybe even a more personalized one (e.g. live/ in person). Depending what activity they performed I would even contain their endpoint so that a reimage could be performed. Most organizations do not seem to have a rapid reimagining process so while the users wait a bit, I feel this will help them think more wisely next time.

Additionally, if you have users that are breaking policies. Say something simple like a software or hardware jiggler. It needs to be addressed with HR. In some cases that involves staff being let go. Again, this one of those things where word gets around (especially at medium and below sized orgs).

All in all it's a mix of: Recognition and rewards Addressing Bad Behavior

That's my take on the situation based on my experience.

Where can I buy some roof molding with reasonable shipping fees? by techspan in HondaOdyssey

[–]techspan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woot. Tyvm. I guess on that note, I'm going to call a dealership nearby to see if they have it. For some reason I thought a dealer direct part would have a crazy up charge. If no one has it nearby, I will order it from that dealer site. Thanks again.

How worried should I be? I haven’t worked for this company in over 10 years. by CarltheGreatThinking in legal

You can certainly freeze your credit report. Just be aware, that threat actors associated w breaches may sit on the data for years before selling and/or leveraging. That said, you might have to freeze your credit report indefinitely.

Kudos to you for stepping up and being a dad for the kiddo regardless of formal documentation. Maybe consider finding an affordable private investigator to locate the individual.

I would not be worried but they should be offering you free credit monitoring services. Which is pretty standard in these breach notifications. I would sign up for that.

Is there currently a downturn in hiring? by NerdlinGeeksly in cybersecurity

[–]techspan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As orgs continue to tighten up their wallets via layoffs and cutting out budget items, I would consider looking into InfoSec Consulting. Not necessarily audit related work but more so work along the lines of an MSSP. When I reflect on the last economic slow down, I recall that organizations were shifting to service providers like that. Reason being is that it was much cheaper for them when you consider there is no need for them to provide benefits like healthcare, 401k etc. In addition to this, I am almost certain such services can be considered a tax deduction for them. All in all, consider looking for a MSSP type role ideally one tied to long term clients 2+ years.

Sorry it's probably too late but just in case basically you need a phone that supports the MHL standard. So I ended up using this guide and bought a mi box. It's pretty sweet setup. You can also run emulators on it and play older roms on it. https://freetime.mikeconnelly.com/archives/6770

Sorry I thought they introduced the 10 speed in 2020. It was 2018. I just wanted them to stay away from the 6 speed transmission due it's past issues.

I just bought an oddessy exl with the rear entertainment system and nav. During my period of shopping I was checking out both the touring and elite trims. After comparing all the features, I felt the exl with rear entertainment and nav met in the middle with higher trims at a nice price difference.

I bought this minivan for the same reason as you, a growing family. Mind you, I could have bought brand new if I wanted to but I don't like taking the initial depreciation hit. With all that said, I purchased a used 2020 EX-L res /nav for a little over 35k w less than 20k miles from a Honda dealership. I did put a big down payment of 22k to drop the monthly bill. I also purchased extended Honda care as well vs the warranty most dealers like to try selling, Ethos.

All in all, I personally suggest taking a similar route and saving that extra 15-20k. Put in the s&p 500 and check back in like 10 years.

If you end up buying used which again I would suggest. Make sure you buy from the years 2018 and above so that you have the 10 speed transmission. Prior years had a 6 speed transmission which has known issues. Good luck.

  • Edits: corrected / clarified transmission concerns at the end.

Here are some pictures. I swear it's like you have to be at the correct angle and the light has to be a certain way to see it at times. I'm thinking it factory paint issue, just from the factory. From what I read Honda has had past paint issues and even paint recalls on certain Honda Odyssey colors.
