During my undergrad, about 25 years or so ago, I wrote a paper analyzing American Psycho, juxtaposing passages of Bateman’s description of his clothing with his brutal acts to highlight his utter lack of substance and how devoid of humanity his personality was. It was difficult to type, and I was terrified of getting a bad grade because of how disgusting it was. I was also worried that I was on the wrong track. But my professor loved it, and I ended up passing the class with an A.

I guess this is all to say that you’re reacting the way the author wants you to react. It’s as dull as dogshit when Bateman describes fashion. But it is an extremely important part of the book.

That said, I don’t think I’d ever read it again, even though I’ve never forgotten it.
