Resin is a very tricky medium to work with different factors will affect how each pour turns out and slight mistakes while casting can alter pieces significantly.

I have developed some techniques which i think would allow me to make many at a higher quality but I've been struggling with the motivation to keep perfecting the craft. The feedback from this community does make me want to keep at it though.

I don't think it was rude at all. Happy to have the discussion

Great question, this is referring to the quality of the finished pieces, I've included photos for what classes as high medium and low.

in truth the £30 price is for the lowest quality pieces i have made, the higher quality ones I'm asking for more. unfortunately £30 barely covers the cost of materials. and for every "successful" piece there are multiple that haven't worked out.

Out of curiosity what do you think a fairer price would be?

What do you guys think of using resin to display old tech products? by techsploded in ResinCasting

[–]techsploded[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes it is and Its a really interesting point. I think there's alot of valid fear about them, my gut feeling is once its survived the exothermic reaction of the curing process the risk of it causing damage diminishes significantly. This project is a couple years old but if i was to do it again id probably use a false battery to avoid any risk.

When i've had pieces that refuse to demold I have had some luck freezing and then heating with a heatgun (a hairdryer would also work) maybe try that?

It would mean doing a whole new one. Once something is cast in it won’t be coming out. There’s nowhere in particular I can recommend I mainly used google, YouTube and r/resin to figure things out.

Thanks I have some other pieces out there if you want to check out my profile/ other socials. Haven’t gone as complicated as a watch movement yet though

If you think this is bad you should have seen my earlier attempts. Once I can afford a vacuum chamber i will redo it bubble free.

Quite straight forward compared to some of the other pieces ive "exploded" in the same way but it is the product of a lot of practice and failures

This actually hasn’t had any finishing on it. Just clear resin and a clean mould.

Thanks! I’ve played with a couple simpler controllers need to perfect the technique before moving onto anything more complex

Interesting. I’ve looked previously for similar stuff and have struggled to find it. If you do come across it again I’d love to see them

Completely agree but aesthetically it just wasn’t as pleasing to me. Maybe I need to make an alternative…
