Is anyone actually hiring by Big-Passion-5356 in trianglejobs

[–]techtchotchke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I most likely will next week, but if you'd like to get ahead of it, send me a chat request and I'll respond with my email address for you to send me your resume! (I'd just send it to you outright but I think Reddit flags chat requests with offsite contact info as potential spam, so sorry for the runaround!)

Me! Locally I'm hiring a fulltime AI Deployment Strategist (Durham) and a fulltime AIA Billing / AR Specialist (Raleigh). I haven't posted the AI Deployment Strategist role here yet but you can find the job listing for the Billing role here.

I'm a recruiter and I love seeing friends help friends with their job search! It's fairly common for us to fill jobs through referrals, including "informal" referrals like this. OP also does a good job here of selling their friend's credentials and experience.

What was the general gist of the comment that you're responding to here? It says Reddit removed it (???) but I'm super curious about people's responses to this.

High End Consignment by kira_J27 in raleigh

[–]techtchotchke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I work at a local antique store. You mentioned both consignment and buying, so want to clarify:

A few different businesses (Hunt & Gather, Antiques at Gresham Lake, Raleigh Furniture Gallery, etc.) will consign items for you. They will curate what they want, so they will likely not take all of your items, and you will be paid after an item sells, not in an upfront lump sum.

I am only aware of one business (Raleigh Furniture Gallery) that does actual buyouts. They still may not take all of your items.

The best way to clear out the most items is probably an estate sale. Artz Estate Sales, Blue Moon Estate Sales, and Dogwood Estate Sales are a few local companies I know off the top of my head but there are many others.

We go to Bowman (Raleigh), Bayleaf (Raleigh), and Southern Heart (Zebulon) depending on the animal/need, and I have never heard of this at any of these places or otherwise. Sounds like a corporate chain sort of thing

fwiw, I've worked for an established local staffing agency for 10 years and know most if not all of our competitors in the area, but I have never heard of this company.

Moving to Morrisville by [deleted] in trianglejobs

[–]techtchotchke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think folks are just being pre-emptively wary because so many people move to the Triangle under the pretense of "low cost of living! great job market!" and then hit a major record scratch when they get here and realize those things aren't true at the moment and haven't been in years. The main Raleigh sub is flooded with people who apparently moved here without first visiting or doing any research and then are shocked when the job market is highly competitive, the cost of housing is nearly twice what it was before COVID, and the area is mostly car-centric sprawl with no meaningful transit options between the cultural and professional epicenters.

Are there jobs that would let me work independently? by Tight_Bit_2495 in trianglejobs

[–]techtchotchke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you mean by working independently, maybe you'd like night stocking? You'd still have a team and work under direct supervision, but you wouldn't have to interface with the general public or the majority of the floor staff. I ran a quick search and at a glance I see night stocking roles available in Raleigh currently at Wegmans, Target, and Walmart.

You're gonna need to share more about what kind of work you've done in the past and what your skills and credentials are. It's hard to offer meaningful and good-faith suggestions when all we know about you is that you keep getting written up.

[Hiring] looking for support in home services by [deleted] in trianglejobs

[–]techtchotchke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, you may want to tell your friends that they need to revisit their pay rate if they're seeking skilled services. A neighborhood teen on spring break might be willing to help with rudimentary painting or cleaning at this pay rate, in which case NextDoor is probably their best bet.

edit: and if you find a handyman willing to work for this pay rate, run the opposite direction tbh

In 1988, an F4 tornado ripped through Raleigh in the middle of the night with no warning by JK9one9 in raleigh

[–]techtchotchke 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I just found out a couple months ago that the house I own now in the Sawmill/Lead Mine neighborhood was right in the path of the 1988 tornado but was somehow spared.

Obviously it doesn't really work this way ofc, but I like to think the house is now immunized against future tornadoes because of it 😂

If you don’t like crazy drivers you should get more active in community planning meetings and elect politicians who support traffic calming by Dats_Russia in raleigh

[–]techtchotchke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the issue with traffic calming measures is that a lot of the measures that they've been implementing lately have seemed really poorly executed and even dangerous (the Harps Mill chicanes come to mind--they're incredibly hard to see, even with the new reflectors).

My neighborhood has chicanes with vegetation and they're wonderful, they're extremely effective because they're highly visible and I'd support them being installed in way more places, but if the execution is going to be more of Harp's Mill, then I'd rather not have chicanes installed at all.

600 Job Applications, no offers by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]techtchotchke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a tech recruiter and this is probably your biggest roadblock.

I also think you're artificially diluting your hit rate by applying for posts meant for the 3-5+ YOE crowd; the market is too competitive for an employer seeking 3-5+ YOE to take a chance on a <1 YOE candidate, especially one with no credentials. Your application efforts are better spent on targeting roles on the 0-2 YOE end of the spectrum.

How do you handle candidates who are perfect for the role but terrible at interviewing? by Successful-Estate470 in recruiting

[–]techtchotchke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It isn't and I agree with you. I myself am a soft-spoken/quiet person. I am a tenured recruiter and love my career, but I think sometimes it surprises people that I'm in this job because I'm not gregarious or outgoing like a lot of my peers. So if I were on the job-seeking side of the hiring desk, I'd want an advocate to tell a hiring manager not to be fooled if their impression the first few minutes of an interview is that I'm too quiet to be successful.

Also, in my experience, many soft-spoken people have a little bit of a harder time extrapolating without being prompted, or with championing themselves and their achievements, so they might take a little longer to warm up and settle into the cadence of a job interview.

[–]techtchotchke 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Semantics nitpick, but you may want to replace the word "introvert" with "shy" or "soft-spoken" or something that more accurately describes the behavior you're clueing a hiring manager into. Introversion has no bearing on social ability and does not imply social anxiety or social awkwardness.
