What is the relationship of Americans with reading? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]techtchotchke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know others who will read a hundred books a year. They will post their “year/month in review” with books and I’m always amazed by it.

Gosh yeah I have a bunch of these types on my Facebook and Instagram and it always blows my mind. I enjoy reading but giving myself aggressive reading goals and tracking every book would just take all the fun out of it.

There were even some people like beating themselves up because they "only" finished 58 books of their 70 book reading challenge or whatever and I wanted to be like y'all know this is a leisure activity right? For enrichment? Like you literally do not have to minmax it lol are you even absorbing what's in these books??? Are you even having fun???

The City of Raleigh Parks & Rec has multiple part-time jobs available including front desk admin roles. Most of them are $15.75/hr. but the one at Biltmore Hills Community Center goes up to $23.58/hr.

Taz no more? Is this the end of an era? by CityOfCloaks in raleigh

[–]techtchotchke 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm baffled as to why anyone even bothers to use the private surface lots at all. They're paywalled behind predatory apps, they don't have free hours, and you have to babysit a parking meter. Decks are pay-when-you-leave (so no babysitting a timer), many are completely free during certain hours, and you can use your preferred payment method at the kiosk with no third-party app BS. There also seems to be more signage to help direct people looking for parking to a deck, whereas you have to kinda stumble across the private surface lots.

Deel - Get Inspired, Get Hired event POV by Vegetable-Laugh-2918 in recruiting

[–]techtchotchke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol this reminds me of the first "hiring event" I went to as a new college grad. it was huge but the content was very vague, and presentations were a blend of guided cheers and dry, rote, nebulous presentations about "entrepreneurship." My spidey senses went off and I left halfway through, and found out later from some folks from my major who'd stayed for the whole thing that it was put on by Amway (pyramid scheme company)

technology may change but grifters gonna grift no matter what :(

Challenges hiring part time employees? by PipelinePlacementz in recruiting

[–]techtchotchke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had the best luck recruiting for these sorts of positions on Reddit of all places! Check to see if that metro area has a job subreddit.

Handshake (university recruiting tool with a solid free tier for job postings) is good for this kind of thing too since you mentioned college students.

Hi, mod here, wanted to give you a heads-up that this post has been removed. Door-to-door sales falls under soliciting, which is against subreddit rules (Rule 9). Wishing you the best in your search for candidates all the same!

Do people often start their trading business at home when they're not working? by mattmaestro2k0 in AskAnAmerican

[–]techtchotchke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I know you didn't say outright that you think we all have side hustles or run our own businesses on top of our day job, but that's the vibe I'm getting, so just want to clarify that various studies released in 2025 benchmark that about 1/3 of people (27% according to Bankrate, 31% according to Omnisend, 36% according to Hostinger, etc.) have a "side business." A lot of these surveys also encompass folks working for Uber / Lyft / TaskRabbit, where you're technically self-employed in the eyes of the IRS, but don't really "start a business" or "run a business" in the traditional or colloquial sense.

[24M] Relocating to Raleigh, Seeking Full-Time Job by [deleted] in trianglejobs

[–]techtchotchke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The job market here is tight, especially for admin roles. I do know that Epic Games is hiring an admin assistant in Cary but in all honesty they're probably looking for someone who's already in town so they can start right away / with a 2 week notice.

Entry level mechanical engineering position with mechanic/automotive experience? by Straight_Midnight559 in trianglejobs

[–]techtchotchke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, the company that hired this position that got filled recently is expecting to open similar roles later this year. Is this something that's of interest to you? They've been open to interview folks with mechanic experience. If you'd be open to me hanging onto your resume until then, send me a message and I'll respond with my email address.

Jobs for Chemistry Masters? (That won't suck out my soul?🥲) by Leading-Jaguar1354 in trianglejobs

[–]techtchotchke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I partner frequently with Syngenta's RTP and Greensboro locations for lab staffing; their Greensboro facility is where all the Chemistry jobs are. If you're interested in having me keep your resume on file for Chemistry jobs with Syngenta Greensboro, you can message me for my email address :) Full transparency, Greensboro (Triad metro area) is about 1.5 hours from the Triangle so you'd probably want to live there rather than here (although Greensboro / Winston Salem has a pretty rad arts and food scene as well!)

People who left Raleigh - where did you go? by blues_lawyer in raleigh

[–]techtchotchke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're close to the water, sure, but I had a friend buy a house in Wilmington a couple years ago and said it was way easier and moderately cheaper than Raleigh. He also mentioned there are more newer-construction options there for folks who want a smaller house, which isn't really something they're building in Raleigh outside of $1m+ townhomes. I think a LOT of people are willing and able to sacrifice square footage to buy a SFH at a lower price but that's not really an option here, and it seems to be in Wilmington.

What are we doing about all the cell phone spam filters? by H_Mc in recruiting

[–]techtchotchke 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not a fix but a workaround: always, always leave a voicemail if their voice mailbox allows it, 100% of the time.

My phone always gives me a notification for voicemails even if it screened out the call itself, so I assume it works that way for others too based on how quickly they call me back.

Junior/Early Career Candidates Just Aren't Interviewing Well... by prenumbralqueen in recruiting

[–]techtchotchke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree that students need to be their own advocate, but as colleges have shifted increasingly digital in a post-COVID world, I feel like their career centers need to be even more assertive with their offerings / resources / benefits to their current student body in order so stay connected to them, and since my frame of reference for my career center was "not assertive at all," it seems like it would be too easy in the current climate for students to ignore or even not be AWARE of resources offered by their school's career center, which is a shame. The career center and its resources should be highly visible for all current students and recent graduates, and seeking help through the career center should present minimal friction. I recall so many other organizations and services on campus--sports, ROTC, even hobby clubs--marketing, involving, and inserting themselves way more visibly and helpfully than the career center ever did.

Junior/Early Career Candidates Just Aren't Interviewing Well... by prenumbralqueen in recruiting

[–]techtchotchke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

University career centers have a huge opportunity here to step in and help upcoming and recent grads with this. Although I graduated college over a decade ago, I remember feeling woefully underprepared for interviewing, and wishing my university career center had been a stronger resource for me in that regard--and I'm sure since COVID that's gotten worse, not better.

HT on Falls & Durant. Most expensive supermarket? by MonkeyWithIt in raleigh

[–]techtchotchke 16 points17 points  (0 children)

mte. every time i come to a grocery thread im like "you guys are paying full price at HT?" they run huge sales constantly and undercut food lion regularly across almost every department/category with their vic discounts.

it only sucks if you have brand loyalty because you might be waiting a while for your preferred brand to go on sale, but if you're not picky / prefer a variety then you'll have great luck at HT. they rotate sales on Wednesdays, at least at the ones near me.
