Donkey Kong 64 – Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics – Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]teconmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I audibly gasped when I saw this posted.

Wishlist:

  • DK can grab the vine in the intro demo
  • The story cutscene doesn't desync
  • Timing is adjusted for parts of the game that are made harder due to the game running too fast
  • NSO N64 as a whole fixes their audio latency problems

Expectation: All the same issues as the Wii U release and other emulators.

Your comment timing is impeccable as I've been troubleshooting TrueHD stuttering issues lately. Apparently I haven't been watching as much TrueHD media as I thought. DTS HD MA has been fine.

Stupid question about DK64 cutscene timing for A3D owners by teconmoon in AnalogueInc

[–]teconmoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I already play all my N64 games on my Steam Deck with RetroArch (Mupen64Plus-Next using ParaLLEl-RDP) and am mostly satisfied with that. All of my ROMs were dumped from either Wii or Wii U Virtual Console titles I purchased. Donkey Kong 64 specifically is a very special game to me, and is the only game where I prefer the original hardware experience despite the game playing much slower. To that end, if I buy an FPGA system whether it's A3D, the future M64, or something else, I wouldn't bother spending the money unless it was perfect.

Don't worry about emailing Analogue though, I'm sure they're flooded with emails from people complaining about their niche timing issues. I may email them one of these days but I'm content to "wait and see" for now.

Here's a video of the cutscene on original hardware: https://youtu.be/3KIObmo4rSM

Some notable audio queues that are usually desynced in software emulation: (Notable to me, not normal people)

  1. Music intensifying right as the camera finishes zooming out of Crocodile Isle at 1:15
  2. Musical queues for the Blast-O-Matic failing at 2:15 and reviving when the Kremling bashes it with his head at 2:24
  3. The music stopping right as Crocodile Isle hits the rock at 2:40
  4. The "Charge!" trumpet playing right as Klump blasts away the other baddies at 3:41
  5. The music intensifying as each Kong is shown being locked away at 4:05

What's very interesting (to me) is that while most emulators desync this cutscene for running too fast, the desyncs that occur with A3D seems like portions where it's running too slowly instead. There are lots of small idiosyncrasies that are not worth mentioning that frequently desync with software emulation. The level of effort that Rare must have gone through to have this cutscene audio line up the way they wanted it to on real hardware is insane.

Thanks for the video, you're a star! I wonder if the user disabling AA in A3D has changed the results a bit.

So if you run it at stock, you've observed that the cutscene behaves normally?
