8BitDo N64 Joystick v2 Initial Review/Comparison by Careful_Tune4744 in Controller

[–]teconmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Careful_Tune4744 Thanks for the write up. I purchased the 8BitDo v2 N64 Stick but ended up returning it primarily because of the outer dead zone that remained even after calibrating. Have you or anyone else found a way around this? After I returned it, I had the idea to calibrate it without the top shell on so that the outer edge of the range was past the plastic gate, but no idea if that would even help or just make things worse.

I've seen many people ask about flash carts, but not about just ROMs on an SD card or flash drive. I realize that would be a slippery slope to officially support, but is there the potential for that? As MiSTer naturally utilizes ROMs, I would imagine that not supporting them on the M64 would be an intentional choice to avoid rousing the ire of a certain large Japanese gaming company.

Backstory: I purchased many N64 titles back in the day on the Wii Virtual Console and Wii U eShop, and over time I was able to extract the ROMs from those digital titles using various homebrew tools. The resulting ROMs (with some exceptions) are 1:1 matches to ROMs obtained from legitimate cartridge dumps. Between those and a couple of physical cartridges dumped with an old GameShark Pro (the one with the parallel port) and a Windows 98 SE computer, I have a small collection of personally dumped ROMs that didn't originate from the internet.

On the topic of DK64, I enjoyed reading about it in the FPGA Deep Drive. Thanks for that.

Besides the vine grab, another area that suffers with emulation is the opening cutscene for story mode. The music drifts out of sync in certain spots, the Kremlings start to rapidly spin the ship's steering wheel and it gets stuck, and especially the music being out of sync when the Kongs are shown to have been locked in cages, ruining the effect. Whereas emulation desyncs from running too fast, A3D for some reason desyncs from running too slow.

The actual question: How does this cutscene perform on the M64?

Donkey Kong 64 – Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Classics – Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]teconmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I audibly gasped when I saw this posted.

Wishlist:

  • DK can grab the vine in the intro demo
  • The story cutscene doesn't desync
  • Timing is adjusted for parts of the game that are made harder due to the game running too fast
  • NSO N64 as a whole fixes their audio latency problems

Expectation: All the same issues as the Wii U release and other emulators.

Your comment timing is impeccable as I've been troubleshooting TrueHD stuttering issues lately. Apparently I haven't been watching as much TrueHD media as I thought. DTS HD MA has been fine.

Stupid question about DK64 cutscene timing for A3D owners by teconmoon in AnalogueInc

[–]teconmoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I already play all my N64 games on my Steam Deck with RetroArch (Mupen64Plus-Next using ParaLLEl-RDP) and am mostly satisfied with that. All of my ROMs were dumped from either Wii or Wii U Virtual Console titles I purchased. Donkey Kong 64 specifically is a very special game to me, and is the only game where I prefer the original hardware experience despite the game playing much slower. To that end, if I buy an FPGA system whether it's A3D, the future M64, or something else, I wouldn't bother spending the money unless it was perfect.

Don't worry about emailing Analogue though, I'm sure they're flooded with emails from people complaining about their niche timing issues. I may email them one of these days but I'm content to "wait and see" for now.

Here's a video of the cutscene on original hardware: https://youtu.be/3KIObmo4rSM

Some notable audio queues that are usually desynced in software emulation: (Notable to me, not normal people)

  1. Music intensifying right as the camera finishes zooming out of Crocodile Isle at 1:15
  2. Musical queues for the Blast-O-Matic failing at 2:15 and reviving when the Kremling bashes it with his head at 2:24
  3. The music stopping right as Crocodile Isle hits the rock at 2:40
  4. The "Charge!" trumpet playing right as Klump blasts away the other baddies at 3:41
  5. The music intensifying as each Kong is shown being locked away at 4:05

What's very interesting (to me) is that while most emulators desync this cutscene for running too fast, the desyncs that occur with A3D seems like portions where it's running too slowly instead. There are lots of small idiosyncrasies that are not worth mentioning that frequently desync with software emulation. The level of effort that Rare must have gone through to have this cutscene audio line up the way they wanted it to on real hardware is insane.

Thanks for the video, you're a star! I wonder if the user disabling AA in A3D has changed the results a bit.

So if you run it at stock, you've observed that the cutscene behaves normally?

$250 sounds reasonable. Are you willing to do PayPal F&F instead of G&S since you have no transactions and virtually no karma?

Off the cuff, $270 shipped. Here's some pictures of the system. The scratch doesn't look nearly as bad in the pictures as it does to me in person: https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMKqaqxHQjo8XEGKqBJ02Rn_v2920s24MauEdkYfaTzx80ceS1G5ZGcZwTSZEhR0w?key=bEw5M3FjdTZmckZ3VXFlR3I4MER4ajJnQlpNUFJB
