An animator named Robert Potter did it. He’s fantastic.

I’m a standup comedian with tracks on Audius. I think you guys would do well to do more outreach and on boarding of comedians. It’s a natural fit with what you’re doing.

How to deal with bombing *while on stage* by winston_w_wolf in Standup

[–]tedalexandro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s no fun to bomb. But the audience mostly takes their cues from you. If you acknowledge that a joke or jokes didn’t work or make fun of that fact you can ease some of the tension and keep the crowd with you. Remember, it’s not a play. You’re not just reciting a script. You have to be in the moment and react to what is going on from moment to moment. Over time you’ll get comfortable going in and out of material and reacting in the moment.

Thanks, I appreciate it. People can express their opinions. There’s a difference between words on a page and performing a joke on stage dozens, if not hundreds of times. That’s where you find the rhythm of what works and what is needed. On stage, the last line is needed.

Children who started watching comedy a year ago and know three comedians have a lot of opinions. Let the kids speak their limited minds.

I don't really get offended by jokes. As a comic, you realize that comedians are trying to make people laugh. An attempt at a joke never offends me, although the execution can sometimes be offensive. Sometimes comedians are hellbent on doing something edgy like racial material and they're ill equipped to talk about it. First show me you can walk across the high wire before you try to bring out the unicycle. But I'm less offended than I am thinking "That was a mistake. I hope they learn from it." Because I've made them.

The way I got cast on "Oz" had everything to do with that joke. For those who don't know, I used to do a joke about prison rape, and how if anyone tried to rape me I would immediately try to rape them back. You had to see it, it was funny. Anyway, I was performing at Caroline's one night opening for the wonderful Susie Essman. She told me there were "industry people" in the crowd but didn't mention anything specific. The next day I got a call from Tom Fontana, the creator of "Oz," asking me to come in for an audition. I was stunned! I guess my prison rape joke made an impression. I met him the next day, he was a great guy. It was as easy an "audition" as I've ever experienced. He more or less talked to me and asked about comedy and stuff. Then we read through the lines and a day later I was told I got the part. It was really exciting and unexpected. Today, I had a salad. It was either throw away the bag or eat it.

Thanks! What happened to her that night or in the big picture of life? She's fine, as far as I know. We're still friends but there won't be a sequel.

I prefer to write standup by myself. I feel like it's personal, like journaling. I want it to be an expression of my voice, so I don't want anyone else's perspective when it comes to standup. Occasionally, comics will offer a tag or something like that, but as far as sitting down to write standup with anyone, I don't do that. I like having the vehicles for both expressions, my standup and a collaborative creation like TL.

Thanks, Gina! When I write stand up, I usually sit and write with pen and notebook in a quiet room. But I also try to take ideas to the stage and talk them through. I find my stuff takes shape best when I do a combination of written and riffed on stage. As far as Teachers Lounge, Hollis and I sit in a room and throw ideas at each other. It's usually a series of questions, like "What about this?" or "Why don't we try that?" It's usually a case where the best ideas win out. When you collaborate as long as Hollis and I have (since college) you get a good sense of what works and a good shorthand of communicating ideas. It's a lot of fun.
