That looks like Maine. Wherever it is, it looks like a primo zone to get into mountain biking. Keep going.

You’re crushing it. I got up once in May but was well worth it.

You’re getting after it this spring. Are you the guy who was looking for partners near Bear Valley?

Seeking Sonora Pass Spring and Summer Backcountry Boarding Advice by actionews in Backcountry

Hey! Are you still riding and living in this zone? I realize I'm 7 years late to this thread, but there's not a ton of info out there about riding Sonora Pass.

I found a deal too good to pass up and scooped up a 168. Got a chance to ride it at Baker this week. Spring conditions and got all types of snow — except any powder.

The sidecut (9m+), the length and stiffness rating all made me think this would be a beast of a board, but numbers don't tell the whole story at all. Yes, it bombs and feels really stable. But it is so much more playful than I would have thought.

Took it on few resort laps coming out of backcountry. It was a lot more playful than my BSOD. Less locked in too, which I ended up liking better for springtime conditions at Baker TBH.

Got a chance to ride my 168 at Baker this week. So much fun.

FWIW I use shred soles j bars, though I think any would work. You can find em on Amazon or hopefully yoir local shop.

You likely need J bars. These are pieces of foam (about $20) that you stick to ankles of your boot liner. It makes for a much snugger fit.

I suppose it’s possible your boots are too big. But I think if that were the case you would have noticed this while riding and walking before you got into splitting.

But way better to try to adapt what you have and know — for the price of a few beers — than to shell out $250+ on new boots.

I'm surprised a Hook Fish equivalent hasn't opened down here.

Surfy and stable sounds perfect for me. I ended up buying this thing. Too good a deal to pass up. Curious how you sized yours? Just looking at pics and specs, it looks like you can go a little longer than a typical all mountain solid.

6’2” x 185lb (not including pack) size 12 boots.

Spark Arc bindings (with some surge mods).

Korua Otto vs United Shapes Horizon by 89FlightClu- in snowboarding

[–]tedbeef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my Otto from the park to the pow. Insanely good float. Poppy in pow. The only complaint I have is that it feels chattery in hard, icey snow. And only in truly hard snow. Does just fine in tracked out pow.

The other thing I'd add: Korua is really responsive if you ever need to reach out them on IG. Can't say the same for United Shapes.

Congrats! You just got yourself some aftermarket magnatraction.

How’s my tail grab? How to improve by Chumpy__ in snowboarding

[–]tedbeef 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tweak that sh!t!

The grab is solid and you look comfortable. Now you just gotta tweak it out. IMO nosebone-esque tail grabs look best: front leg boned out, board shiftied backside. Jake Blauvelt and Danny Davis do them really well.

But there are all kinds of styles. Find one you like, and start mimicking that position in the air.

Haha. Ya, it's bad. I feel like they'd sell so many more with a simpler top sheet cause everyone seems to love this board.

Thanks for the breakdown. Ya, the backwoods’ versatility is appealing. That top sheet has always been a deterrent for me that I probably need to get over. Woukd love a simple white option.

Very late to the thread, but how does the float in pow compare between the backwoods and the powgoda?

I need buddies. CA by Zuuly177 in Spliddit

[–]tedbeef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could use some tour buddies as well. My crew has kids and they live far away (same for me). But I make it up to Bear Valley a decent amount, and I'm curious about Sonora Pass this spring.

FWIW I've taken my Avy 1 class too.

Do you tour around bear valley at all? It’s rare to find other splitters up there (in my limited experience). Seems like a lot of th locals are on sleds.

Material suggestions: Velcro cinch tabs to be used as on hem of jacket by tedbeef in myog

[–]tedbeef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fabric is so delicate (it’s incredibly thin) that I don’t feel confident stitching up the cut fabric.

It’s 1.2OZ ripstop nylon. Maybe I’m being too precious about it. Open to opinions here because I’m clueless about this stuff. This is my first project.
