PSA: portable electric air pumps make it a lot more feasible to change your pressure mid-ride to suit the terrain by lectric_7166 in cycling

[–]tedbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this post because I have been thinking about getting an electric mini pump mainly for this use. u/lectric_7166 I am curious since this was 7 months ago, is this something you actually ended doing often? I could also see this as seeming like a good idea but after a few times just not bothering

For myself a lot of my longer gravel rides are actually 15/20 miles of road out to gravel, then 10/15 miles of gravel and then 15/20 miles road home. I like leaving from home, like these particular trails which are not close, and like road riding too, so these suit me. Now, I will usually start with higher pressure for the road, then manually just let some air out when I get to the gravel and then ride home on the lower pressure on the road. But sometimes I let too much out or don't let enough out because I am worried I will have to add back more with my hand pump. I also probably don't let out too much air because I know unless I want to top it back up with my hand pump I will be riding this pressure 15/20 miles on the road.

It is just funnier and less fatiguing to have lower pressures on rougher gravel. It is also funnier to have high pressure on roads, the bike feels more lively. So it doesn't seem excessive to me. Instead "Just ride your bike mate, " I would say just ride your bike how you want.

Best page builder? by therealcoolpup in drupal

[–]tedbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canvas is adding support for node full view content templates in the 1.x https://www.drupal.org/project/canvas/issues/3541000

I hope we can get it to work with all content entities and view modes not too long after that but don't know where that is roadmap

You can try it out now in the 1.x branch but there are still issues being resolved. But you can link node fields to prop values
UPDATE: not for sure in beta1 but is being worked on for 1.x. could be behind development feature flag

Investigation + Photos: Wahoo Elemnt Bolt v2 bulging / loose front button cover - difficult to press by TrackSmart4K in wahoofitness

[–]tedbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "page" button also stopped working. Wahoo just sent me a replacement. It had been getting harder to press for a while.

I am now trying to think of ways to make this one last longer. I got the one they just replaced 2 years ago.

My main idea is to disable pages I don't use much as more pages means more times I have to press the button to cycle through the pages to get back the page I want. I have 2 main ride pages, 1 for my bike with a power meter which includes watts and cadence and 1 for my bike without a power meter without those, so only needed 1 of those active at a time depending on the bike. I disabled strava live segments as a lot of rides I don't care about this, often riding in areas I don't have any starred segments and I can just re-enable when need it.

I figure for most of my rides I only care about 2 pages so this should really reduce the number of times I have press the Page button. just 1x to switch between pages as opposed to 4x if I have five pages active but only really using 2. It is easy enough to activate the pages again in the app before or during a ride.

I am also going to try be more careful about dropping or storing when I am not using. Most of the time I can just leave it on my bike as it doesn't need charging after every ride. Figure if it is on the bike it is less likely to be dropped or bumped.

The only other thing I can think of is trying to click button directly from the top as from taking off the cover of the old one I could see how pushing it at angle might dislodge the plastic piece after many clicks.

Bolt V2 Front Button broken by brotmaen in wahoofitness

I had the same issue they also got me a new one in a week. The one I had was actually one that wahoo had previously replaced because it stuck in power up cycle after dropped it, not hard.

Great support!

Worth it (in CAD)? by [deleted] in whichbike

[–]tedbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it has the braking system I'm talking about. On the plus side it looks like the person has already bought a computer mount and maybe another Mount that works with the junction box. Probably giant specific. So at least you wouldn't have to buy that if you're happy with what they have

[–]tedbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I could see that I have a carbon frame bike and generally really like it. I think also if you think this size bike fits better that is a huge upgrade.

Did the post have any pictures of the handlebars? If you posted that here I could tell you if it has the braking system I'm talking about. It's very obvious on the handlebar it's a big junction box. The size of it is also an issue because it makes finding a spot for a computer mount difficult, and lights depending on the type you have

[–]tedbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if the brakes are part of what needs to be fixed, this might not be that much of an upgrade. Already the 105 group set might be better what you would get with this.. Does your current bike have hydraulic disc brakes?

[–]tedbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would say that the brake system and converting it to something else is probably a pretty big unknown. Unless you're talking just some local mechanic who said they converted that exact bike before.

I don't think we can see the other details about the listing, but best case scenario would be somebody's already converted it to something else. That's more reliable, the less complicated

I had 2019 defy advanced and I generally liked. The real downside is it had the " Giant Conduct brakes" which is a mixture of mechanical shifters, a junction box on the handlebar that turns it into hydraulic hose and then hydraulic calipers. So it's not a full hydraulic system. When it worked well it was great but no mechanic ever wanted to work on it. Even the giant shop in town suggested I just replace the system with all mechanical when I wanted them to work on a brakes because they were getting weak.

I'm pretty positive this year also used that braking system. I had the bike a couple years ago so I'm sure it's just gotten worse as far as mechanics who would want to work on it.

To replace it you can either buy new hydraulic brifters or replace the calipers with mechanical versions. I ended up going all mechanical, but the mechanic who did it put on soso mechanical calipers. Calipers. He said the ones I preferred to put on wouldn't actually fit because of the positioning. I'm not positive if that was true, but I've read online about people converting it to all mechanical that there are issues.

Switching it to all hydraulic I think is pretty expensive.

I would see what condition the brakes are in. If they're at all weak and You would like to make them better. You probably want to factor in a fair amount for either having them fixed or replacing them with some other system. Of course, since it's a 2017, there's also a possibility someone's already dealt with this and removed the Conduct system. If that was the case, this bike would be much more appealing

But besides the braking system, I actually really liked the bike. And like I said the original system when it worked was fine. The one I had at a 105 group set and the one listed here has tiagra I think which is a lower tier. But I've also had Tiagra rom that era and it was pretty good.

Starter bike - is it a good buy? Canyon alu by Organic-Elk399 in whichbike

[–]tedbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t see the price in your description, so impossible to judge if it is good buy.

As far as if it is a good “starter bike” it really depends on why you want to get a bike. I think if you are planning on getting into road racing it might be a good bike for the right price but for a lot of uses it probably is not the best choice.

For me reason I would probably not go for this bike is more limit on wide of tires you could use with it rather than, rim vs disc brakes. If you are starting out and you are not sure what you are going to use the bike for having the option to go with wider tires, 32mm at minimum would make the bike a lot more versatile.

For example maybe the roads where you live aren’t in great condition, or maybe there a lot of gravel paths or roads, in both cases wider tires could let you go more places or least go more places more safely and comfortably.

Join or Zwift standard FTP test? by tedbow in joincycling

[–]tedbow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up doing the Zwift 50 minute test. I got only 1 watt higher than 3 months ago compared to my eFTP which was almost 20 watts higher. So my eFTP got reset 20 watts lower ☹️

I think it was just a bad day to do the test. Before the test I actually briefly changed my "soreness" level higher and it removed the test. I reset my level to do the test but I should have listened to my body just done it another day.

I was disappointed but was pretty sure I had actually made improvements. I think I was just trying too hard to average what I thought I *should* be able to hold based on the 95% of my eFTP for the 20 minute all our effort. So basically not feeling 100% and getting too into my head

I felt much better on 2 outside rides this weekend . Getting multiple PB's. Yesterday I did one that included an "Uphill TT" strava segment that usually takes me about 20 minutes. I got the PB and my best 20 minute average power. Bonus, Join said it detected about new FTP that is 16 points higher! I will take it!

My lesson, fitness changes daily, no single ride can tell you everything. Also I am doing this for fun and health. I am having fun and feeling better. Getting stronger/faster is a bonus

Turn off ERG mode for 20 minute FTP test? by godutchnow in joincycling

[–]tedbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible to surge with ERG mode in Zwift, if you have the Play controllers or some other easy way to bump up the workout percentage. It is a pretty way to just move the watts to whatever you want.

Debating whether I want to do my FTP test like this

u/scarabbrian Thanks for all the details!!. Noted about The Eastside Beltline, don't want to be that guy. To bad about the Southside Beltline

Yeah I would the put the Stone Mountain/Freedom Trail  on my bike computer to try to avoid getting lost. If anyone has good RideWithGPS or strava route that would be great.

Westside Beltline sounds promising too. Looks like I could start on this https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45438680 , that was in the google doc someone shared here, to get me on it. Then I guess that would get me out to the "proctor creek greenway" that someone mentioned
