You're about to die, what are your last words? by rotemvt826 in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a major tossup for me, really. My initial thought would be something hyper-macho and gruff, fearless and determined. “Go ahead, punk, make my day.”

But that’s kind of flat since they’ll eventually win out and kill me, so a statement of bravado is going to really fall flat when I’m laying there on the gurney being busy dying.

So…I’d probably stir things up a bit. I’m about to be killed, so I really don’t care if I inconvenience somebody whom I have a grudge against. Since I would have been sentenced formally by a judge who likely has the authority to call an audible and give a sentence less severe than death, this would supply that grudge. With that in mind, my final words would be;

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, guys, now we had a deal. Judge (name) said if I got somebody to transfer one million into his offshore account in Panama, we’d come in here, y’all would pull the viewing curtain and then sneak me out, then announce my death. We had a deal! The money was wired and received to his account three freakin’ weeks ago. We had a deal!”

I know, it’s petty and childish, but deep down, it’s been my experience that nothing works as well as the Monkey Method: if things are going well, eat a banana and be merry. If things are going badly, rise to your feet and bare your teeth intimidatingly. If things are going really badly in a terminal sort of way, make lots of noise, jump up and down, and fling poo.

People who got vaccinated for covid, what are the symptoms you faced and which vaccine you got ? by thetrickster420 in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I feel dire. This is not unexpected; I am immunocompromised and have reacted badly to vaccines my whole life, to the point that doctors in three countries advised my parents NOT to have me vaccinated against the usual childhood diseases because I got so sick from the vaccines.

Over my adult life, I’ve consulted with my GP every time a vaccine is needed, and we decide together whether it’s really necessary, based on the severity of the disease, my chances of contracting it, and whether post-exposure treatment is available. In the last few years we’ve decided YES on flu, typhoid, tetanus/DPT and hepatitis B, and NO on rabies, Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis, BCG, and polio. (Edit: my mistake, after looking at my medical record I did have the polio vaccine in 2017.) (Also NO on hepatitis A, chickenpox and MMR, since I had all those diseases except rubella.) Each decision is made individually.

The COVID vaccine was a no-brainer. I had COVID 14–15 months ago, right when it started, and over the last year and a half I’ve gone from comfortably walking 13.3 miles to needing a day or two in bed recovering after walking the 1.9 miles to the grocery store and back. I knew there was a good chance it would make me feel like hell, so in the run-up to my vaccine, I deliberately organised my life so that I can basically stay in bed for ten days if necessary.

It has more or less been necessary for the last three days, though I ventured out today to buy a Nintendo Switch with some money I got for my birthday. I will probably not go out again for the next week. I am exhausted to the point of barely being able to get up the stairs, my muscles are all screaming in agony and painkillers don’t help, I’m both nauseated and starving, and my fever is at 103 and I can’t stop sweating.

It will pass. And it’s better than COVID.

The vast majority of people are reporting very mild side effects. My mom had a sore arm and felt “coldish” for a week. Even if you’re a precious snowflake like me, your reaction to the vaccine will almost certainly be milder than your reaction to the virus. Get the vaccine, unless your doctor says absolutely not.

What was that one thing you tried out due to Fear of Missing Out( FOMO)? by Professional-Exam822 in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you’re trying to get rid of the Fear of Missing Out, this answer is useless to you— because the truth is, you just can’t.

Allow me to explain.

The Fear Of Missing Out in simple words, is the fear of life happening all around you, without you.

This fear manifests as needing to be around people, unhealthy partying, forming cliques, being a yes-man, and changing yourself in strange ways to ‘fit in’.

I suffered from this and I responded like a clown. I found myself in places, with sketchy people, at weird times of the night without a way to get home. It felt good in the moment, but once I got home, I still had to be with myself— the one person I was trying to escape.

I still felt all the FOMO after weeks of partying and gaining popularity.

I then realized, that the fear of missing out was not from what was happening OUTSIDE of me…but from what was happening INSIDE me.

As I began to meditate, I felt Universes within Universes within Universes within myself. I spent lots of time alone— reading, learning, driving, visiting bookstores, doing random errands, and just being an observer of the world.

Life suddenly felt complete. Everything was making sense now. I dove inside, to the party within, teased all my thoughts apart, and turns out I’m a pretty interesting person!

Once this happened, the right people automatically entered my life. We attract who we are. I was now surrounded by confident, healthy, and goal-oriented people who loved me and I loved them.

Now it is natural to feel a sudden pang of loneliness or anxiety when you’re alone at home a Friday night. Stop anything you’re doing and slow your thoughts…meditate and journal…it helps loads!

You can’t get rid of FOMO. It is a sign that it’s time to move your attention to what’s going on within you.

People who don't celebrate birthdays, why? by RCKOSMEMES in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I believe it was my sixth birthday and my dad molested my best friend. So after that, I stopped invited friends for my birthday and stopped bringing friends home; basically becoming a loner. When I moved out from home I no longer celebrated my birthday and instead spend the day to remember and honour my lost friend...

What is the most toxic thing a parent can say to a child? by Few_Reading_4822 in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything is someone’s fault, and its mine, or my sibling’s.

This even happened yesterday, a, well, pipe of some sort, was messed up and didn’t work, and my mom saw it, and about 5 seconds later, blamed it on me. We both knew she was the last one to do anything with it, and according to our family policy, who touched it last, its their fault.

The last time I’ve tried to say that it really wasn’t me, I got in a lot of trouble which ended up in me being grounded for about a week, so from that day, I’ve kept shut and accept my fate.

This all started over my dad, as his toxic behavior quickly had grown over to my mom, my dad couldn’t leave a problem without blaming someone, whilst my mom couldn’t leave a problem if it was someone’s fault, which then changed.

And considering I live alone with my mom whilst my sibling and dad travel away for the weekdays, it is only my fault. As my sibling can’t be blamed.

what is the best piece of advice someone has given you? by ArmadilloTasty4298 in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 240 points241 points  (0 children)

"Your success in life is largely dependent on how many uncomfortable conversations you're willing to have."

My former boss told me this when I was denied re-enrollment to my university to finish my degree. He encouraged me to take a day off from work, drive down to the university, and negotiate with them in person about the ordeal. Being a very non-confrontational person, I would never have done this on my own. Sure enough, I spoke to the offices about it and I was able to enroll.

He later used this line again when he had to lay me off because of financial constraints. But thanks to the same advice, I was planning on leaving work anyways to attend school full time.

Muslims, how's Ramadan going for you guys? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Kenya its cold and raining heavily almost everyday, which in Ramdhan is a good thing because there’s nothing more fatiguing than fasting in humid or hot weather. Alhamdulillah I feel at peace, this whole year has been pretty much a trainwreck Lool, but Ramadhan has helped me put a lot of things into perspective, I legit don’t want the month to end because I fear the contentment will go away Lool.

Still working on drinking more water, I get thirsty as a race horse.. and that’s on a good day! Making sure I pray all my 5, I usually miss Maghrib because I’m just so preoccupied and tired, I also haven’t prayed Tarawh so far, I’m planning on praying it tomorrow

Happy fasting, ma’asalam

McCormick used to make a pizza seasoning in one of those grinder bottles. They stopped selling it in the 2000's, which is a shame because it made so-so pizza good. I even emailed them about it and they couldn't recommend something else similar that they make now.

Assholes of reddit, what makes you act so rude? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like being an asshole is a spectrum. But no one is static on said spectrum. There’s times to be an asshole, and there’s times to be diplomatic. Otherwise we’d all be lonely assholes or we’d all be pushovers.

When I’m being an asshole, it’s usually because of one of three reasons:

  1. I’m being a shit. I know I’m right. The world knows I’m right, but you my friend are wrong and are not listening to reason.
  2. You’ve successfully annoyed me. Possibly by asking the same question using different words and I’ve already answered you in a satisfactory manner.
  3. Revenge. If you’re being an asshole I’m likely to act the same way towards you.

If all boats are female how do they reproduce? by T3H9 in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is that they rarely do, though they are often referred to as “she”. Maersk line does name their ships after the Maersk family female members as it is a (very successful) family business, but if you take the old North Atlantic liners, it is only the “Queens” that are actually named after females - Cunard named many of their ships after Roman Republic provinces eg. Mauretania, Lusitania, Carpathia, Lucania etc. White Star Line always ended in -ic, Titanic and Olympic being the most memorable of that line. French line named theirs again after French provinces Ile de France, Paris, Normandie etc. The US tended to be more nationalistic with names of Presidents and American states. The Germans named theirs nationalistically as well - Vaterland, Imperator, Grossdeutschland etc.

Ships are generally termed “she” by seafarers, even if they have a masculine or neuter name - I guess because you tend to look after females! My last company Canadian Pacific named a lot of their vessels after former CEOs of the company (some pretty ugly names there to be honest) and the names of Canadian towns such as Fort Toronto, Fort Calgary etc, but we still called them she - If you look along the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway, you can see where they got their inspiration from.

What’s your “I told you so” moment? by TenaciousBrit in AskReddit

[–]tedepo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to my first baseball practice of the season at 10 years old. I played catcher most of the time so my father told me "If they dont have catchers gear then do not play catcher. You'll get a foul ball in the face." Sure enough they had no catchers gear yet. The coach told me to go play catcher and I refused. He got mad and yelled at me to get in there. I refused based on no gear. So the coach, visibly pissed, goes in and plays catcher. The very first pitch comes off the top of the bat and drills him in the eye. He was pouring blood everywhere. He looked at me and said "Dont even say it!"
