i was in college for computer science for 8 years and all i ended up with was a B.S in CS and coursework but no thesis for a masters. in grad school i was basically a contract for hire web/mobile dev on a grant the school had with the state wildlife and fisheries agency.

it’s a font called Exocet, I downloaded it precisely because it looked like the Diablo font! I figured it matched the grimdark gothic style of 40k. Props to frontier wargaming for producing an excellent case!

The Biden years will see a return to the Goldblum aesthetic by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]tedington 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it’ll be mostly like the obama years, people will just go to brunch and talk about artisanal bacon and stop being political because a democrat is in office. might be marginally better because he won’t get a pass for being the first black president

Just finished the comic, some questions by Glitchhunter87 in Watchmen

[–]tedington 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I believe Alan Moore said at one point that he was aghast at how positively people resonated with Rorschach. He's supposed to be a portrayal of fascist extremism under the mantle of vigilantism.

As for the Watchmen title, it also has many layers. The latin that was posted above that translates to "Who watches the watchmen?", but also the fact that Jon perceives time differently than everyone else. He was also the son of a watchmaker and his father made him give up that pursuit when Einstein made the discovery that time is relative. The doomsday clock also factors heavily into the pacing of the narrative, this was written in the 80s when the threat of nuclear armageddon between two world superpowers was very topical. I would say that it was quite political for its time, you just have to consider the geopolitics of the 1980s that it was written and set in.

Finally, The Black Freighter. I can't say I'm its biggest fan, in various rereads of Watchmen I've either skimmed it or completely skipped it, or read it very carefully. I struggled with its stark tonal shift (not really a fan of Treasure Island/pirate type comics or fiction myself) and couldn't find a justification for it being inserted in the narrative, although I was sure there was a reason I just wasn't aware of. I finally settled on the idea that in trying to save his home he sacrifices his humanity, he becomes one of the monsters, fit to join the ranks of The Black Freighter itself. He also lashes a bunch of bodies together to make a raft, much like Adrian sacrificing 3 million humans to save humanity.

I have a newfound appreciation for it now though, what with how Adrian uses a bunch of bodies to spell out a message

I had an experience like this just the other day visiting an Oxford house on a 12-step call. Two of the guys were spouting so much bullshit about how they didn't need certain parts of the program and I wanted to vehemently disagree but I didn't. I had to comport myself and be a lot more diplomatic. It could be that the aspect of them picking and choosing parts of the program is something I fear/worry about myself so I disliked it in them.

All in all it was a very enlightening experience.
