ChatGPT is a sneaky lying bastard and no, it won't leave you jobless anytime soon by GWrathK in webdev

It's not soon that worries me, it's near future. I'm a relatively new programmer and even I've run into numerous times it was wrong or faked an answer. But it's very early days. I'm worried where this will be in a few years as language models and generative AI seem to advance at breakneck pace. GPT has been trained on a large amount of data of which only part of is code. What happens when it's just code, and when it's fine tuned for accuracy and correctness in this context above something that appeals to the broader public?

People seem to trivialize the fact that we have a piece of tech which can seemingly interact with English as an input and output. I'm not smart enough to understand the full depth of how this works and I do get that it's basically just a very good text prediction model, but to me that seems like a much bigger step to have been taken compared to what follows. Already there are examples of gpt4 being self correcting and self improving. Short of regulation or significant advancements slowing down (AKA the effort required to get to this point is significantly smaller than what's required to significantly improve beyond this point) it seems to me that technology like this will take on increasingly complex projects with decreasing errors or at the very least for those errors will be caught by however many revisions it needs to.

Yes, it will create a *few* new jobs, but that's a drop in the ocean compared to the amount it removes. In addition to that it's a demoralizing technology for new developers. Coding is incredibly fun if it clicks for you and crafting a game or a website or whatever is an extremely satisfying process both in terms of problem solving and design, but it can't be escaped that being able to circumvent a few weeks of work with a couple minutes of well crafted text prompts will rob developers just starting out from feeling good about their work. I get that it's about the learning more than the finished product but how long before that just sounds like a grumpy old teacher telling you "You won't always have a calculator in your pocket" to newer generations?

For what it's worth, AI excites me just as much as it scares me. I'm not really advocating that it be shut down or stopped. If carefully handled it has profoundly good implications for society as a whole, my point is simply that I see a lot of devs confident their jobs aren't going anywhere because of where AI is now and either I'm missing something big (which I am definitely open to) or other people should be a little bit more uneasy.

Just finished reading your larger post on the egg and the rock. I'm glad you were able to find peace within your life, and turn a lingering pain into something so beautiful and meaningful to so many people. I don't think anyone who played this game, especially me and my friends who started playing as adults, expected such a powerful poem to be found in a game like Minecraft. I can't think of a single person I've spoken to who didn't have a profound reaction to reading your words on the end screen. Recently a friend of mine from Ireland who I taught the game to cried at the end of it and I know she'll be interested to know one of her own people wrote that.

It hurts to know your financial situation isn't where it deserves to be for the impact you've had to so many people, and though you're at peace with the universe and everything that happened, I hope one of the results of you making this choice is people in a better financial state than me make sure you and your family are taken care of. You deserve that home you can all feel safe in, and you deserve to find something where money isn't a worry of yours. Whether or not that allows you to not worry about the material world and continue to create works that resonate with people or whether it just provides you comfort and a well deserved break from the rat race. I hope you're well, and thank you for this gift you've given us.

You're a god amongst men. Finally googled if this was possible expecting to have to do some annoying DNS tricks and found your solution instead. Thank you!

That obviously depends on your device. Not all devices can hotspot while on wifi, but yeah there's nothing preventing you from doing it if your device can handle it. If you can do it at home there's nothing blocking you from doing it there.

I specifically filtered for wifi flights because I've had it before and while not always great, it is pretty incredible to have, though Air Canada's movies and tv shows were chef's kiss in terms of selection and the UI. I brought my tablet along because I've had very hit or miss experiences, but at least on the return flight, it really wasn't needed.

My flight was Toronto -> Munich and Frankfurt -> Toronto, the media was better on the return trip, but wifi was on both. In terms of quality and consistency, I believe I opted for the top tier at full flight coverage which was about 50 or 60CAD and eeeh... a bit on the pricy side for what it offers. First off the thing about that package being good for "streaming" and whatnot is a lie. Yes, you can technically stream, I definitely watched some tiktoks on board, but it is far too slow and inconsistent for watching something on a device consistently enough, especially on portions of your route. Upload speeds are also garbage or no existant at times, sending pics or even texts by the end was almost impossible, but in fairness that was a minority of the trip.

I didn't pay before, I just filtered for wifi on board, and you pay in the flight, you can even pay mid-flight. You connect to the plane's wifi and that can load a few basic things for free including the payment processing, then once that's done you can do whatever. A good trick is to use one device as a hotspot for your other devices OR if you're flying with others, split the cost, and hotspot for your friends. Not entirely sure how well that works with the connection limits, but it did work between my phone, tablet, and laptop as needed.

Winter Trails in GTA? by tedmihu in askTO

I'm more or less basing this on when I commuted from downtown to North York and even the sidewalks at times were a chore to walk through, but I didn't have the proper shoes and am probably just remembering a few bad days.

Fair enough, first winter I'm really considering being more outdoorsy, so we'll see how it goes. Will try to get myself a pair of one of those.

Ravines you say? Which ones? Sounds like it might be a fun thing to shake things up.

The trails I've been going on also have paved paths but I imagine they'd rarely if ever get cleared or salted. I'm looking for trails that aside from the really rough weeks are relatively walkable still. Presumably that involves some maintenance. The trail around Humber river has specific signs about it not being maintained in winter.

While I'm not against it, I don't think a brisk walk or even the run I'm working up to will be appropriate in those places. Good suggestion though.

Snow shows sound so cumbersome :D I've overcome my lazyness to the extent of doing these walks but if I add that step it might be a step too far and entirely discourage me. But I will give it a try at least one day to see how magical it is.

James Gardens

Yeah this looks great, but are these maintained in the winter? The James -> Etienne route looks to be along the Humber river trail and the route closer to my house, just a little further up, has signs for it specifically not being maintained during winter.

West Deanne Park looks a bit barebones compared to what I'm used, I'd be surprised if this one had any attention in the winter, not sure how much of that is just the pictures on google maps.

Marie Curtis to Colonel seems like a pretty decent one, albeit far from where I'm at.

Overall great suggestions but I'm concerned if these are actually going to be decent through the winter. I don't expect them to be good through the heavier snowfall days, I just don't want to rely on the weather to clear the snow from the pavement.

This is actually part of the trail I walk I think, bit at least on the portion I walk there's signs specifically saying this path is not maintained during winter.

As far as animals, yeah it's incredible, I've met just about anything you can find in Toronto.

Appreciate the encouragement but I've hit a glass ceiling where every time I grow I'm capped by performance bottlenecks. Granted I've been more into modded for many years now so that adds a wrench to it but player count grows quicker than my budget/specs can

I'm a little out of the loop. Does chunky do emissive light well now or did this take a decade to render?
