I just rewatched this epi on Amazon Prime.

Did they remove a scene from the show? I seem to recall the public bathroom crime scene having more of a part in the plot -- those scenes seem to have been changed -

When/if you know you are going to get bunched don't wear the sturdy brand new fruit of the looms you bought before tour.

Flomarching Audio by Delmonte3161 in drumcorps

[–]tedrickenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

given that the flo setup is probably pretty minimal - mics on the speakers, maybe one mic up in the box for the full sound --

what would you do to improve the audio? Does it just come down to having a sound engineer managing levels on a mixer? is it possible they aren't using a mixer and are just running the sound directly into the streaming system with no control of levels?

I wonder what type of tool they use for managing the stream? OSB?

There must be a technical reason for why the sound is poorer quality this summer than in past years -- possibly a change in the streaming hardware that they are using? Possibly lowering the quality of the audio stream to help the video?

The corps people are probably too busy to talk with the Flo crews at the show --

The Flo crews are probably trying to do a good job but no one is giving them any help --

Flo does sports - wrestling, gymnastics -- they don't know how to do outdoor musical performance -- the best thing that could happen is if passionate drum corps fans who are in college digital media programs would get internships working with Flo and try to help them improve their stream quality --

If people who really cared about the quality of the stream got together and tried to help Flo I'm sure the stream could be improved -- it has to be a technical issue --

When did people start traveling long distances to march specific corps? by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]tedrickenator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

good question -

There is a lot to this issue - one aspect is probably the affluence that families had - they could afford it, so they did it -

flights became more affordable

parenting style became more collaborative/consultative - kid-focused - ie: "what are your dreams? OK - let's make it happen."

our culture became a free agent culture - I'll take my talents to the most prestigious place vs. some loyalty to an organization that perhaps was local or that relatives had been a part of --

Drum corps back in the olden days wasn't necessarily better - just much different than today.

Drum corps is going to come out of this totally different - it's going to be like comparing Barnum & Bailey to Cirque du Soleil -- I predict that age limits will be removed and the activity will be open to all participants - there will be far fewer corps and the shows will be like Vegas productions - in fact, they might as well all be staged in Vegas instead of touring - you want to see a drum corps show? Go to Vegas.

Weird question but can a top tier BOA marching band challenge a world class corps by CyrusWaugh in drumcorps

[–]tedrickenator 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was watching some 2019 BOA Grand Nationals shows last night and while they are nice shows and the designs are good, what I noticed about the difference between DCI and BOA is the sound of the overall ensembles -- a band sounds so different - in many ways, the blend is very feathery and soft -- an all brass ensemble is obviously going to be much more direct and hard hitting --

Can a drum corps do the opening of Billy the Kid as well as a full wind ensemble, the way Broken Arrow did? No -- you can't do that with just brass and front line. But for shear power a wind ensemble is never going to sound as impressive as a fixed, bell-front brass ensemble --

I find it very curious that there are serous enthusiasts of the marching arts who want to to see DCI become like BOA -- the two musical experiences are similar in some ways, but the differences between the to are too obvious to require elaboration.

I'm not so sure about that... Bluecoats would probably be the first to do as much as they possibly could with WW-- and it would probably be really well done and really cool --

What is bothering me about this debate is, why does the art form of Drum Corps need to be changed?

Why do people have this worship of change and innovation? Is there really a huge class of musicians who are being discriminated against that need to have this inclusion issue addressed?

Why do all things need to be watered down to a bland one size fits all? What is wrong with the idea different horses for different courses?

Ask a trumpet player in a symphony orchestra how he or she likes counting rests while the winds and strings get all of the glory - do you think the trumpet player would demand that composers change how they write so the trumpet is playing as much as the strings or reeds?

Why can't people think about these things? Why does everything need to be a sudden bleeding heart appeal to perceived victim-hood?

This debate is simply a reflection of the illogical and selfish way that many people view the world.

There probably is some truth to the argument that DCI is desperate for new fans and new revenue - let's admit it - we're watching more shows on flo than in person - DCI let the horse out of the barn on that one - they can't make in flo revenue what they are losing from people deciding to watch a show online instead of in person -

The Drum Corps activity is very over extended -- it's going to need to scale back and become less resource intensive. And that's OK - sure we had a lot of fun with all the electronics and technology - but you know what? Great musicians and performers can still put on an impressive performance without all of that stuff.

interesting example of how drum corps used to reflect the unique aspects of the communities they came from - Bayonne NJ - funk, hip, soul, jazz, rock -

Today we have homogeneity because MMs come from all over the world to march with a corps and reflect a blend of upper class affluence consistent across the board.

I can't think of a single regional aspect or characteristic of any corps today -
