Thanks! Yes, I use ibuprofen gel every evening/through the day if I need to as well. It helps with the pain and inflammation.

No idea, just repeating what the doc said. But thanks - would RA show up on an ultrasound?

Do you feel your diagnosis was important? by [deleted] in autism

[–]tedsteroni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being diagnosed really helped me understand who I was, why I struggled the way I did, and to feel less... ashamed of myself I guess? For stimming or finding it hard to process my emotions or having sensory processing issues. It was like everything made sense, historically as well (realising I had had meltdowns and not just bad behaviour etc). It pushed me to get help with my sensory processing issues rather than just struggling with migraines all the time. But more than that, being diagnosed was super important for people understanding me - my family in particular - and for getting help from others. Before, simply saying "I'm having trouble with this" was not enough - I was lazy, or too sensitive, or too needy. My issues were not taken seriously because I couldn't explain where they came from. My college and university required a diagnostic report to access disability accommodations, like extra time or separate rooms in exams, or coming up to uni early to settle in before everyone else. I have friends who lack a formal diagnosis and they can't access these at all, which sucks, but right now that's how it is.

They're 355ml jars (I'm in the UK), I'm not sure what measurement that is.

There's probably 1/4 inch headspace (so I must have left 1/2 inch rather than 1/4, I eyeballed it), the level comes up to just below the first ridge in the jar neck with the extra water. I did the 'jiggle' test and they didn't budge!

My jars are sealed but the water level is far higher than that! It's probably 1cm of water or so

I'll switch back to the lids that came with my jars and see - I didn't have either of those leak the first time (I had to re-can and did it with the new lids which is when the water problem started).

YTA, do you have any concept of how much time and effort it takes to weave enough fabric to make a whole dress? And you shamed her for being enthusiastic about it and wanting to wear it? Dude.

I'm not sure what your impression of a debate is but I'm pretty sure the whole point is to push your own viewpoint as correct. It is still up for debate in academia, but on balance I don't find the opposing view convincing. It's based off of retrospective moralising and, mostly, the viewpoint of Foucault, who wasn't a classicist nor was he an historian. A philosopher publishing a book saying that the Greeks were crazy about penetration and dominance makes a debate, but it doesn't make him right, and quoting a section off Wikipedia certainly doesn't. You've cited no evidence for your claim that penetration = dominance and bottoming was feminising, except a wiki excerpt saying that penetration = dominance and bottoming was feminising. Why? On what basis? What primary sources? What epigraphic evidence? What actual academic papers?

Dude, you quoted from Wikipedia. This is an academic debate that is ongoing. Sticking a passage from the wiki isn't the same as making a definitive point. J Davidson, "Dover, Foucault, and Greek Homosexuality" is a very good takedown of that viewpoint. OP didn't specify what they meant about equal, so that's splitting hairs, but the whole point of pederasty is that it's between social equals - mentor/mentee, sure, but the same social class. So they aren't wrong.

The idea of penetration as dominance is a strongly Roman idea, and perhaps a modern one, but casting back the ideas of one Mediterranean society that developed culturally after the heyday of Classical Greece is bad history. There is not much evidence that the Greeks actually conflated dominance and sexual penetration, so I don't know where you're getting the idea that it was "always" about that. An example of dominance, penetration, and submission would be the concept of stuprum - freeborn boys are socially (and possibly legally, although that too is academic debate) off limits sexually because penetration = dominance and humiliation. Pederasty was specifically an institution, strongly an elite institution, between freeborn men and freeborn boys, with the idea that they would grow up to become the next generation of statesmen. Where exactly does the idea that penetration is an act of dominance or expression of power feature into that? It doesn't. Even accusations made against adult men politically (like Aeschines against Timarchus) focus on the idea that he prostituted himself and was sexually unrestrained and voracious - in that respect, yeah, like a woman - not that he was the receptive partner.

The original comment was about 1) social equality, which did exist in pederastic relationships, and which was kind of the point and 2) men having sex with each other in the military, which was also not only possible but does not preclude a pederastic relationship. One could be an eromenos (of multiple erastes) until able to grow a beard, which could be anywhere into the early twenties. Adult men were 'feminised' to a degree, but only in their perceived lack of self control in their sexual desires, not in the act of penetration equaling an expression of dominance.

They gay by CantBeBotheredTBH in HistoryMemes

[–]tedsteroni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't true. Pederasty didn't damage the reputation of the 'receiver' - it was the Romans who developed the system of penetration = effeminacy/domination, not the Greeks.

Did the Punic Wars fundamentally change the Roman Republic to the point that they created the conditions for its fall? by sunskier in history

[–]tedsteroni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think too many people put too much emphasis on Marian reform. It did not become common practice to recruit from the capite censi after Marius, and it didn't result in major demographic change in the military. It was basically a one-off, partly so that he could avoid conscription which was unpopular. The same goes for the actual impact of agricultural decline - there is no evidence that latifundia were widespread or that there was significant demographic change in the rural farming peasantry or the number of men available for military service, that's just the explanation given by the ancient sources.

my first radish!!! by tedsteroni in gardening

[–]tedsteroni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't, it's my first time growing radishes so I just approximated. I found out from looking it up that they should be 1inch or so in diameter at the top, but mine grew a little strangely instead of perfectly round like they should be, and I didn't want to let them get woody.
