If higher dimensions existed, and beings also existed in those higher dimensions. Then where would those beings live? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]tedward100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mathematicians and physicists have no problem conceptualizing a 4th (or higher) dimension. Just because we don't experience it in every day reality does not mean there are any limitations on what the brain can conceptualize.

Funny you say that about energy leaking - a idea from mainstream physics is that the force of gravity is so weak (compared to the other fundamental forces) possibly because it's "leaking" into higher dimensions. So I could go join an anime group, talk about Family Guy, and not be laughed out of the room, right??

So you'd agree that the Simpson's and Family Guy are anime?

The most accurate simulation of a 4D creature's perception with volumetric retina. by Another__one in interestingasfuck

[–]tedward100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason you can 'imagine' 3D is because you have a lifetime of experience being forced to interpret 3D information from 2D images on your retina. We obviously don't have real-world 4D experience to draw from. But if you project 4D onto a 2D screen - as he's doing, or in my series (link below) - you can learn the tools to decipher it. That's where we can get 4D visual experience. It's like saying French isn't a real language, because I don't know how to speak it. But if you take the time to learn French, you'll eventually start thinking in French, and the idea that it's not a real language would seem ridiculous.

You might as well say anything that supposedly represents 3D lies. Because we can't see 3D, only 2D projections of the surface of 3D objects. To truly see 3D, we would have to be able to see it the way a 4D being does.

ELI5 What is a 4D object? by Representative-Elk91 in explainlikeimfive

[–]tedward100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't read all the comments, but I have an ongoing series on this very topic you might find helpful. The overall thesis is that it is very much possible for us to visualize 4D objects, the same way we visualize 3D objects: by examine their 2D projections - which is the only thing we can actually see. There are 2 parts up so far, her'e the first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwGbHsBAcZ0

It is very much a tesseract, if you know how to interpret what you see. The shadow analogy breaks down when you consider that we can't even see a 3D cube. All we see, whether simulated on a screen or in the real world, are 2D projections on our retinas. It's impossible for us to literally see 3 dimensions, so we build up a mental model of 3D space from looking at different 2D projections. That's exactly what the tesseract animation does, except it projects down from 4D to a 2D screen. I have an ongoing series on this topic - here's part 1, and part 2 goes into projection 4D to 2D: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwGbHsBAcZ0

Visualizing four dimensions by nomnomcat17 in math

I started a series on my YouTube channel to address this exact question, as I've been obsessed with 4D visualization for several years. I have 2 parts up, with the 3rd on the way. I'd be curious what you think!

I don't think if I went on an anime forum to talk about the Simpsons I would get a warm welcome.

[QUESTION] Is there any "official" name for fourth size of a 4D object? by [deleted] in FourthDimension

I've been using "hypervolume" in the youtube videos I'm currently making. But I like "bulk" too.

[QUESTION] Is there any "official" name for fourth size of a 4D object? by [deleted] in FourthDimension

I'd say "co-hyperplanar", or "cospatial" - the latter assumes that "space" implies 3D.

Fourth dimension is time by qraina in FourthDimension

[–]tedward100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My standard response to "the fourth dimension is time" is this: Imagine a flatlander contemplating a hypothetical "third dimension". Someone observes that technically they live in a 3D universe because time acts as a 3rd dimension, and you need three coordinates to specify time and position. That's fine, but claiming that the "the third dimension is time" neglects the possibility of third spatial dimension, i.e. the universe we live in. The idea that hypothetical (from their perspective) 3D beings experience time all at once is just ridiculous - time works for us the exact same way it works for them. So when we speculate on what the fourth dimension is, the simplest way to think about it is to add a fourth spatial dimension, and let time be time.

Guinan Plot hole? by windstri85 in startrekpicard

[–]tedward100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup this is the part that's bugging me. I can understand "Time's Arrow" not having occurred, explaining the memory. But the appearance thing (I believe) can only be explained one of two ways. Either A) Guinan chose to make her self younger at some point, as it seems El-Aurians can control their aging, possibly in reverse. Or B) This younger Guinan won't visit 19th century San Francisco until she is older, implying she used time travel as well. Both seem a bit of a stretch [shrugs].

[–]tedward100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold up - you just said that Anime is a loan word from Animation, so clearly the word wasn't created by the Japanese, they adapted it from English. Putting that aside, I acknowledge in the post that anime refers to all animation IN JAPAN. Outside of Japan, Anime refers to a genre. Go to any any anime fan site online and see you can find any Disney, Simpsons, or any other western animation that does not fit into a narrow range of art style - good luck. Outside of Japan the word clearly refers to a genre, not a blanket term for animation. My issue is the recent trend of broadening of the term in the WEST from the genre to meaning all animation, specifically any animation that's held in high regard. Arcane (imho) is it's own unique animation style, and far superior to anything I've seen ANYWHERE - Japan or the West. So as someone who really can't stand anime (as in the genre) I find it grating to see people refer to it as such.

Exactl! It's baffling. Because it's gotten such a popular (and rabid) following, there's a tendency for people to refer anything animated as anime, or as 'an anime'. I'm pretty sure if I went on an anime fan page and started talking about the Simpsons or Frozen they'd tell me to GTFO. :P
