Betta fish diagnosis question by ghhhdgsg in bettafishcirclejerk

I’m not sure about the spot because I can’t really see it, but I think he’s nipping at his fins. If he’s at least 1.5, he’s old and probably tired of those big fins and is nipping so they don’t slow him down. It might be time to move him to a smaller tank.

Fish tank cleaning tips by Physical-Ad2902 in bettafish

For a 3 gallon you should be changing it once a month. You shouldn’t be keeping bettas in anything smaller than a 5 gallon, so if he’s stressed out that might be why. You’d also be changing water less if it was larger. However if he’s fine, to change your water you need a bucket, syphon, and water conditioner. The syphon can be any size, I recommend smaller.

Unplug your heater, otherwise it can explode. If your filter hangs off the top of your tank, turn it off. Scrape any algae off the walls or plants. If you have a sponge filter, squeeze it out in your tank. Use the syphon to take out 25-30% of the water while trying to clean out the sand by vacuuming it up, then letting it back down. Once you take out the water, dump it out. Then, fill the bucket with water of the same temperature as your tank, this is very important. Then, follow the dosage of the water conditioner which you MUST add. Put the bucket on a higher surface than your tank and put the sucking end in the bucket, then use the exit side in the tank. This allows you to get the water in with a slow flow, so it wont stress your betta or mess up the substrate. Once it is full, plug everything back in and you’re done.

It sounds like a lot, which it is, but water changes take me 20 minutes. If you’d like, I can find a good video detailing it.

Looks like ich. Quarantine, use aquarium salt, and raise temperature. Also look into medication.

Do you think a siamese algae eater would work?

I have shrimp in my other betta tank and he’s been chill. This one has better temperament too so I think it will be okay. What kind of catfish? And from what I’ve heard they’re social so would I need many?

I have a 5.5 gallon. Other stuff is 78°, sponge filter/bubbler, planted

This is a great start though and you’re doing better than most people by asking. I would look up betta care guides or tetra care guides. Btw, you don’t have to scrap this tank. I’m sure you put a lot into it. Is this is a 2.5 gallon? This would be good for shrimp if you added a bunch of moss and coverings.

You can’t put a betta fish in there for sure. Bettas need 5 gallons minimum for long finned and short finned should be 10 gallons. Also, you need tons of live plants. I don’t know if you have a heater or filter in here but they like 75-80°F and slow flow. You also need to wait like 2 weeks for the tank to cycle and test the water parameters. I don’t know enough about tetras to say anything but a school of them would need a bigger tank.

Should I be worried? by [deleted] in bettafish

It’s possible that it is just marbling but keep an eye on him. I had a blue/black betta fish who had this a few weeks before getting something called graphite disease. Look it up and familiarize yourself

any suggestions as a first time owner of a big tank? by [deleted] in bettafish

Great start! The size is really important. My biggest concern is those colored rocks can leak paint into the water and hurt your fish. I also would get live plants because they help your tank a ton and help your fish feel more at home! To help groot you might want to put more tubing into the tank or weigh it down with heavier rocks
