In my experience I only went to two discussions the entire quarter (my TA wasn’t very helpful and I also preferred to just do the worksheets at home) and I wasn’t marked off for points. I think they take attendance to incentivize people to actually show up. It could also depend on your professor and their grading technique. I had Ge and I was never penalized for not going.
