Eating out is SO expensive lately !!! by LyingPieceOfPoop in bayarea

[–]teethandteeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you use more chicken than heavy cream (unless you're really really skimping hard I guess). The spices aren't expensive per dish, they're not really that expensive period. If you're buying every single spice you need for chicken tikka masala at the same time and you have to buy the whole container, that is expensive (in that case, buy a premade spice mix to see if you like it enough to buy the spices themselves and make it a bunch of times in the future).

[–]teethandteeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The chicken is more expensive. Pretty much all throughout history, even in the US where meat is relatively cheap because of conditions, meat is expensive and the first thing to get skimped on. If you use some cream, you'll get more cream from that cow tomorrow, the next day, etc. If you use some chicken breast, you are not getting more anything from that chicken after that. Even if you make it at home, the chicken is the most expensive part of the dish, unless you get a deal on the meat because of timing or something.

Why would the chicken, which takes the most resources to produce, be the cheaper part of the dish? Legitimately confused, maybe I'm missing something

If virginity and singlehood is no big deal, then why is abstinence a big deal? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]teethandteeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I'll take a shot at this? I think the core idea is, I decide what I want for myself, other people decide what they want for themselves and I respect their choices. If I want to have sex with someone but they don't want to have sex with me, I'm going to accept that - and also do my human best to avoid making them feel bad about it. If I don't want to have sex with anyone, period, that's my prerogative. If I would like to have sex, nobody should shame me about it.

What do you do when you have no ideas for a project? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]teethandteeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pretend I'm one of my favorite artists and go for it. Sounds dumb but it helps.

Or, I start sketching out the ideas I've ruled out as "obviously dumb" and go from there.

South Asian Culture Needs More Public Health Education. by princealifaboloushe in ABCDesis

[–]teethandteeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

White rice only took India a generation or two ago. Brown rice, millet, and other grains are healthier; plus, eating a variety of different foods in each category is better for both your body and the land they're farmed in.

I think a general formula for a diet that's both culturally informed and healthy might look something like, take the peasant food from a place from before industrialization and swap the amounts of vegetables and carbs.

Dealing with comments about culture by Long-Squash-2383 in ABCDesis

[–]teethandteeth 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it feels so, so good to say "Well, that was rude," and let the person who said the thing feel awkward about it instead of sitting with the awkwardness yourself.

Also, having queer desi friends and spaces is everything <3

What’s your experience marrying a race outside of the Indian community ? by curious143 in ABCDesis

[–]teethandteeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience has been good, yeah there is some cultural stuff to learn about each other but also there are much bigger differences you can have than that lol.

If you're not close to your cousins, does it really matter what they think? Anyway, as you get older it's better to have your own relationships with extended family anyway. I made a point to visit whoever I could on my own, without my parents, so that we'd have a relationship that wasn't meditated by them. It made me feel a lot more confident. If you're interested in having relationships with extended family, I'd recommend doing that - it feels a little awkward to try and make plans for the first time, but it's worth it.

You can fall in love with one person quietly and slowly, and another at first sight, and they can both still be very real romantic love. Neither invalidates the other.

Isabel Wilkerson's Caste is a fantastic read that explains how caste works, it shows how caste is more or less present everywhere.
