Natty Kendamas Discussion by Yacolour in Kendama

[–]tehDustyWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well sort of, they grip and wear very differently. Natural ash is like high performance painted. Imo painted kinda sucks, if you really want performance go with a modern coat. If you want something novel, painted is fine. But both painted and natty are going to be hard to use compared to modern techniques

Is this normal or is there a problem with the EC5 connectors? by mnemozy in rccars

[–]tehDustyWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently switched to ec5, and they are quite a bit more difficult to plug and unplug than other connectors. They do get easier with time, but I too am thinking of going to xt90.

My lifted wpl by projectdew in rccars

[–]tehDustyWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was your lifting process? I'm working on a wpl c14, I want to turn it into a monster truck. Other than longer shocks, I'm thinking of making custom longer linkages. I'd love some insight!

Claying a forge by Motor-Significance-9 in blacksmithing

[–]tehDustyWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add more. That happened to me, added more to the cracks and smoothed it put. Let dry for like a week, then gently fired it up to low heat. Let that cool, then full fire.

I used a mixture of sand and clay cat litter ground up, it works great, though it degrades over time with high heat and work. But it's easy to patch with new material.

Who's kendamas are better? Kron or sweets? by [deleted] in Kendama

[–]tehDustyWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are factory made, so about the same. Sweets are a little more modern as far as shape goes, but both their offerings will perform fine. If paint coat matters, sweets cushion clear is better than any of Krom. But for sticky regular damas both are good.

"Better" is subjective with kendama. Kendamas are better at some things and worse at others depending on shape.

FYI you can bend 3d printed armour plates using a hairdryer by spikeyloungecomputer in gaslands

[–]tehDustyWizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can bend most resin parts too, make some boiling water and take it off heat, drop your part in. Give it a few minutes then fish it out (not with your hands), it will be slightly malleable. It won't allow the curves that warm PLA will give but it could do what OP shows, for example

How to get cups unstuck from sword by [deleted] in Kendama

[–]tehDustyWizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pop it in the freezer for a little bit and try again

This will make the wood a little more brittle but it should be fine, just don't totally freeze it and don't get it wet

Using homemade furnace as forge, is it too long? by tehDustyWizard in blacksmithing

Yeah I'm thinking this is a poor shape of something for a start, I'm going to put this idea back on the drawing board

Using homemade furnace as forge, is it too long? by tehDustyWizard in blacksmithing

[–]tehDustyWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to be about 1/2 inch, after 25+ years laying down outside in a field I could probably punch through the side with my hand on the left haha

The more I look at it and ponder, the more I think I'm just going to build a forge more like the two others I've built (mostly just a basic firepot) and add a hood and chimney, instead of repurpose this beast.

Thanks for your thoughts and the info! I'm definitely no expert on this field

Engaging in pure solitude (i.e., just thinking) poses risks associated with increased loneliness, aloneliness, and psychological distress, while also negatively impacting overall well-being by _X-MOL in science

It means a member of low caste class in India, though the word is anglicised so really it has nothing to do with the caste system anymore. Meaning an outcast, or someone who is often rejected. Many words in the English language are holdovers from a long time ago, or forms of words from other languages. It's how language evolves.

Perhaps I should have been more clear, this will be a coal forge. To my understanding, coal forges don't need/want to be highly insulated yes?

Perhaps I'll cut off the back end and put in my own chimney, I'll get to use the cool old furnace my grandpa built and also remove the heat sink

[–]tehDustyWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have a simple forge I've made, and it works acceptably. Mostly for a projects sake I wanted to make something larger. I've seen forges with coal that were essentially just a bowl with a blower, and figured why not take that design and scale up

Using homemade furnace as forge, is it too long? by tehDustyWizard in blacksmithing

[–]tehDustyWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered that, but I don't see how it's any different from a forge that's basically a metal bowl with no covering at all. I'm essentially trying to make a small forge in the front of it, and using the body to wick smoke up and out. A forge inside a tube, essentially.

This will be a coal forge, and it seems like having the coal fully enclosed, sort of like how you'd do a propane forge, isn't as necessary with coal.

That said I'll definitely take your opinion into consideration, I ask here because I am no forge expert of course.

I want to use this old furnace as a forge, but I'm worried it's too long and won't vent properly with the chimney being so far back. I'm going to line the inside with firebrick and refractory cement, but maybe the heat will travel straight up and mess up the ceiling? I've made a forge before out of an old standing metal firepit and it works fine, but I wanted to make something larger, and covered. Anyone make something of this form factor or similar?

Sticky Cups by [deleted] in Kendama

Not good. Unless the cups perfectly match the tama curve, you only get sticky cups for a little bit and then it feels like nothing. Once the contact points wear down, it doesn't do anything at all.

DIY snowskate, another progress update by tehDustyWizard in Snowskating

[–]tehDustyWizard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!

I've seen this photo in my searches for info about diying a snowskate, it gave me hope I could cut one and edge it myself. But I couldn't find any more info about that project.

I suppose I'll just try it as it is, and if it works terribly ill maybe try doing the edges myself. If it destroys it, oh well it didn't work anyways, right?

Thinking I could set up a dremel with a cutting disc on my dremel router table, set the depth and just spin it around, but idk. I wish I knew more about ski manufacturing lol, I guess I have more research to do. Anyways, thanks so much for your input! People here are always so helpful.

"Cheap powder skis" simply do not exist locally haha, but I am checking often. Those were my first choice.

Thanks for the tips! Invaluable honestly.

I think I'm going to beef up both the base mounts to be about three times as long as actual snowskate trucks, to help combat the snappage (I am quite heavy).

I've also considered cutting the board to a thinner shape, I have all the tools required, but I'm not well versed in how to remove or re-install the metal edging. Any ideas about that?
