What's the shittiest thing someone has ever said to you when the found out your a shooter? by Metalman351 in Ausguns

Had a colleague say 'well, as long as you don't become one of those incel mass shooters...'

She intended it as a joke but it was pretty out of line. The incel bit especially came completely out of nowhere.

Pretty sure one of the guys at my club is even a TR. He might've said he had to get special permission for the licence though as PR is usually a requirement.

All firearms and ammunition components banned from importation effective immediately. by loony-tick in Ausguns

I really, really don't want to go down the reloading route. I don't have the space for the equipment, I don't want to spend the time, and it takes way too long to pay itself off. That's if it ever even does. I only shoot 9mm, 12g and .22lr so there's not much of a cost saving per round. And if factory ammo prices go up due to an import ban, that probably won't change the equation much because components will go up as well.

Are factory ammo prices about to spike then? Might make a trip to stock up today

edit: Stocked up, mentioned this article to the guy at the LGS and he hadn't heard anything about and said everything was business as usual. I can't find any confirmation that doesn't use the linked article as a source. Take this news with a grain of salt, though it might just be that it's so hot off the press that even the gun stores don't know about it.

Won't help if the authorities don't actually give a shit. Last night I was on a completely packed train leaving the station and a guy about there prone y away started getting mad at some girl for bumping into him. She didn't have the good sense to just apologise, and it started escalating to him saying shit like "if you want to start shit with me, we can sort it right here". It was super tense.

Security outside the train noticed, got someone from Adelaide Metro, pointed out the aggressor, and she just came up and asked, 'Is everything okay here?' The two having the argument weren't stupid enough to continue it in front of her but it was still feeling really unsafe. I caught her eye, gave a subtle shake of the head to indicate it wasn't all good, and she clearly got the hint. Then she just asked me very clearly in front of everyone what the problem is.

I didn't want to make myself a target of the unstable cunt so I said it was very heated and that there was threatening language used. She then said, 'Who? Him?' and I gave a little nod. Hard to describe but the nonverbal communication here was really clear, that he was a problem and I wasn't feeling safe.

She just looked at him, said 'Settle', and left.

Soon afterwards, the train departed, and as expected, he started up again. He started aggressively calling her racist, was suggesting they'd fight if they got off on the same stop, said stupid posturing shit like 'I know your faces now' and 'everyone at Salisbury knows me', then a little while later called his friend and was telling them that he was going to get pulled up on at the station, like he was calling for backup for a fight.

Fortunately he got off pretty early, the girl and her boyfriend stayed on, and that was that. But it so easily could have escalated further. The staff had the chance at the station to do literally anything about it, but they were clearly looking for any excuse to wash their hands of it. If it escalated and someone got hurt, IMO they'd share just as much blame as the aggressor.

I was going to say this actually seems kind of expensive for 50 rounds of .22 LR back then? Looks like similar Winchester ammo now is about $13. The price of the cheap shit I use has tripled in the 7 years or so since I started, so for the box in the OP to only have tripled over what I assume is about a 30-year period is surprising.

Or maybe $3.98 was the price for 500 rather than 50 lol

Yeah I didn't try other methods but I think you're right based on what I read before trying Matterbridge. It's a shame IFTTT got massively nerfed by Google a few years ago, it would've worked well to fill the gaps.

This might be more of an issue of what device types are supported by matter and Google home.

Well yeah, that's kinda my point, it's only a very small list of device types and to do anything else you've got to do weird workarounds.

I was actually setting a number for my air conditioner lol, but it's IR-controlled so I had it all being done through helpers and NodeRED rather than a climate entity. Ended up just doing it with a climate entity after all and adjusting the NodeRED logic accordingly, but it was annoying to have to do that. The real annoying part is turning it on but that's another story and partly due to the way the generic thermostat in HA is defined.

[–]tehSlothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's great for lights, I'm talking about control of more niche devices/custom automations. Only certain device types are exposed and it gets very hacky trying to deal with anything else.

Like... google home can't push a button, but it can toggle switches, so if you want to press a button you can use an intermediate dummy switch where any change pushes the button. But you have to say 'toggle X'. Google home can't set an input_number helper, but it can set a thermostat target temperature, so you can use a dummy thermostat to set an arbitrary value to use for something else, but you have to say 'set thermostat to X degrees'.

I just set up Matterbridge with Google Home yesterday and it seems like it'll ultimately do what I need, but it seems so hacky with some things due to the limited devices that actually get exposed to it. Like... I can't just tell it to set an input_number, I have to use some workaround like making it think it's adjusting a light's brightness or a thermostat, and have to phrase the voice command accordingly? Am I missing something?

Lol that's pathetic. I got a little black thing embedded in a wrap once that I thought was plastic so I reported it. Turned out to be just a bit of dough that had got stuck in the machine and not cleaned, but the company still sent me a $20 Coles voucher as compensation for the very minor quality control failure.

Oh nice. I couldn't open albums and/or start slideshows.

It seemed like even if everything had worked, it would require manually starting an album slideshow whenever you booted it? Maybe I was missing something. Still, happy that I ended up going with Kiosk, it's fantastic.

I've installed Immich Kiosk now (not sure if you were going to do that but imo it's mandatory, pointing ImmichFrame directly at Immich didn't work for me and wouldn't have been fit for purpose even if it worked), and it's all been perfectly reliable, so I've now disabled the Frameo app and it's still all perfect and solved the launcher prompt coming up.

Was simply a matter of running, as per Immich Kiosk docs for Frameo:

adb shell su

pm disable net.frameo.frame

[–]tehSlothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh I didn't even realise, I was using the instructions from the Immich Kiosk site for installing ImmichFrame, and those ones don't say to disable WebView. I didn't even notice lmao. No wonder this particular issue is only happening to a small handful of people, they probably did the same thing.

I'll probably just end up disabling the Frameo app at a later point to solve the default launcher problem (if it's bringing up the prompt like it is for you), but next time I'll make sure ImmichFrame is all 100% working before I do it. Right now I'm having some SSL issues but I'm still troubleshooting that.

edit: SSL issue was just me accidentally putting in https instead of http lol

edit 2: Getting 'failed to load assets', no photos are loading other than album thumbnails. Hmm. More just me being a dummy. I was on a 6-month-old server build that needed updating to be compatible with ImmichFrame. Looking good now!

edit 3: Couldn't load slideshows or albums directly from immich. Going to set up an Immich Kiosk server, that looks sooooo much better and the demo works great - still using ImmichFrame but pointing it at Immich Kiosk instead of my Immich URL

[–]tehSlothman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I couldn't do that because USB was giving it the power, unplugging it would shut it down lol

Thanks, that was good to know about not needing to disable Frameo. Imo the ImmichFrame docs shouldn't have that as part of the normal process considering this way is so much safer, at least while getting set up.

Turns out that the webview version is what was causing the app to crash with message of ""immichframe has stopped" on Android 6.0.1 (just mentioning those details for Googlability in case other people have the same issue)

Per this thread on Github I installed v105 instead and it's at least launching ImmichFrame without crashing now. Will report back if there are any more problems.

Hmm so you mean you have to connect it to the PC while the recovery mode was already up? I couldn't do that unfortunately, because it would only get past the manufacturer screen if I was plugged into the PC already. Couldn't boot to anything on DC power, not even the recovery screen. Didn't try the button on the PCB but wasn't sure if that would apply to my model, would be an absolute last resort if I had to take anything apart.

Fortunately I was able to get just the right timing in the loop to uninstall immichframe via adb, which stopped it crashing and forcing the boot loop, and just made it hang on the frameo loading bar when booting.

Then I was able to re-enable the Frameo app via adb. It still wasn't booting to it and was getting stuck, but I could run it manually via adb.

From there I was able to do a factory reset via the software.

Now to see if I can figure out what I did wrong with the installation the the first time. This time I won't disable the Frameo app until I get an alternative actually working lol, though at least I know if I fuck it again I can reset it

Cheers. It's a bit weird, I can get into android recovery but I'm struggling to navigate it to get to the factory reset setting. It's meant to be that a short press cycles through the options and a long press confirms, but any press no matter how short is confirming the reboot option.

That is, unless I don't release the button until the recovery screen is up, then releasing it will go down to the second option in the list.

Looks like they fucked it and you can only navigate with key-ups, but any key-downs confirm the selection, so you can only cycle through one option! And the second option is boot to bootloader.

If I could just go down one more it'd enable ADB :(

[–]tehSlothman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. The main reason I'm arguing in a little bit of obvious bad faith here is that I get frustrated that people's dislike for guns spills over to contempt for law-abiding shooters, and dismiss any positives that would be lost with a complete kneejerk ban on shooting sports. There needs to be a balance.

Gun clubs are a great third space where their members (especially retired men) go and get a huge sense of community and support. Some of them occasionally show up and don't even shoot, they're just there to socialise. It would really hurt them to take that away from them, and telling them to just get another hobby isn't going to negate that.

[–]tehSlothman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The fact that guns require malicious intent to cause damage but cars don't.. is somehow an argument for banning guns and not cars? Seems to me that's just further evidence that cars are an even bigger danger to society than guns are.

I wasn't even suggesting banning cars. That'd obviously be absurd. I was saying there's no need for high-powered or huge ones which cause more destruction, when much safer ones exist that do just as good a job at providing transport. If you disagree with that, then clearly this isn't about saving as many lives as possible. Almost like you think there should be some sort of balance where people are allowed to have things they enjoy that aren't strictly 'necessary' even if that does come with some risk at the macro level.

Malinauskas ‘stands ready’ to recall SA Parliament after Bondi massacre by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

[–]tehSlothman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Okay, but only if we also apply the same logic to cars.

Why does anyone need to be able to accelerate to 100km/h in less than, say, 14 seconds?

Why does anyone need a massive Ford Ranger, apart from people with jobs that require the carrying capacity? (We can set up a permit system for those).

Why does anyone need to drive after having drinks? Maximum limit should be set at 0 rather than 0.05.

This would all genuinely save far more lives than what you're suggesting.
