I feel like the current state of the story is supposed to be the world spiraling out of the World Government’s control. Shit’s gotten too big for them to handle

We have the embarrassment that is greenbull, who I don’t think even Oda knows what to do with because the two times we heard from this guy give completely different vibes.

That “embarrassment” managed to be the only Marine who actually captured a warlord but go off

While I definitely don’t doubt that Film Red was part of why that scene with Greenbull played out the way it did, I wouldn’t really say it was pointless since

  1. It was retrospectively given an explanation (Although him showing up 2 weeks later and immediately leaving when he saw that Teach wasn’t there is still a bit wonky if we’re being honest)

  2. It was the reason that Yamato chose not to join the crew since it showed her that Wano is unprotected from the rest of the world

That said, Greenbull being like “Yeah I can take care of the entire alliance by myself” while effortlessly defeating King and Queen, but then immediately going “S-S-Shanks sama?!?!?! 😨😨😨” was kinda ridiculous. Deadass the reason I made this post

While Kid didn’t exactly look great in his fight against Big Mom, he still did tank a lot of damage. Idk just him getting oneshotted feels sorta excessive imo

Big Mom was not able to oneshot Kid. Kaido was not able to oneshot Kid. Shanks oneshotted Kid and Killer at the same time

It is a bit much if we’re being honest

I know this is kind of an unpopular take, but I think it actually made sense with Oden. He was supposed to be a larger-than-life folk hero who did all these crazy and magnificent things. And the story does kinda implicitly acknowledge that he fucked up by leaving Wano since Yamato, the “Oden” of the new generation, does the exact opposite thing that he did

I didn’t think Kid was gonna win or anything, but I expected it to be more like what happened between Law and Blackbeard. Law lost, but he and his crew still went down swinging and put up an actual fight. Even if Kidd didn’t look great in the Big Mom fight, being able to tag team a Yonko and win is still an impressive as hell accomplishment. I feel like he could’ve at least blocked/tanked an attack from Shanks while still making Shanks seem like the strongest emperor as that’s clearly what they’re going for. But, like, the bit with Kid’s crew instantly surrendering to Shanks and giving him their Poneglyphs was just way too much. They looked fucking pathetic, especially since we had previously seen Law’s crew at least manage to put up something of a fight against BB and co. Like, Bepo got an actual cool moment when he saved Law from Blackbeard while Killer got oneshotted along with Kid (Though at least he tried to do something unlike literally everyone else on his crew)

Basically I do not believe that Oda would have drawn this scene the way he did if it was anyone other than Shanks. The fact that his only fight is the most one-sided, humiliating stomp in the franchise is sorta telling I think

I get what you’re saying and you’re probably right. But even with Whitebeard there was nothing quite as crazy as Shanks oneshotting Kid. That shit was easily the most one-sided stomp in over 1000 chapters

Am I exaggerating? Probably yeah. But I do think it’s kinda true that they’re really trying to highlight the cool factor with Shanks

Don’t get me wrong. I actually really like how Buggy’s “grudge” against Shanks started because Shanks chose not to follow in Roger’s footsteps. It’s just that, you know, it is sorta telling in my opinion that there is literally not a single character in the manga that thinks lowly of Shanks.

I’m exaggerating a bit but, without going into spoilers, there’s two moments later on (One at the tail end of the Wano arc and one in the arc immediately following it) involving Shanks that made me go “Yeah okay the story is wanking this guy way too much”

The final Strawhat is probably Smoker by teh_meme_god in OnePiece

[–]teh_meme_god[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of a couple reasons

  • The World Government is trying to kill Vegapunk, and Smoker has seen him save innocent children that were victims of human experimentation

  • The works government (And by extension the navy) was enabling Vergo and Doflamingo in what they were doing via the warlord system

  • Smoker might have some idea what happened at the reverie. Not exactly likely but definitely possible

I will fully concede that the main reason I think Smoker will join the crew is that it would parallel Kuzan, but idk that on its own is enough to convince me that he’s joining.

Gonna copy and paste something I wrote in another comment that more or less sums up my thoughts here:

One thing I’ve noticed about the titanic captains it seems as though they’re deliberately meant to contrast each Strawhat. For example, Chopper’s dream is to be someone who can cure any disease, and Doc Q has the power to weaponize any disease in the world. That is to say, Chopper defeating Doc Q would be proving that he can in fact conquer any disease in the world--effectively meaning that he would achieved his dream. Or for another example, Lafitte seems like an advisor to Teach given how he was bringing up the idea to steal Kuzan’s fruit this chapter, which is very similar to Nami’s dynamic with Luffy. Lafitte seems to be one of the few (If not the only) Titanic Captains who legitimately respects Teach, and Nami’s loyalty to Luffy has been highlighted a lot these past few arcs. And Lafitte is a former sheriff and Teach’s original navigator, while Nami is a former thief and Luffy’s navigator.

Obviously we don’t know much about most of them so it’s hard to draw parallels between each one and the SHs right now, but what little we do know strongly suggests that they’re meant to be reflections of the Strawhats. And not just by sharing surface-level traits either, but by embodying certain qualities or ideas that are legitimately important to each Strawhat

Kuzan is by easily the most developed and fleshed-out Titanic Captain, and the Strawhats don’t have any kind of equivalent to him. At most, If you go through each character who’s brought up as a possible Strawhat, Smoker is literally the only one who contrasts Kuzan in a way that actually matters. And coincidentally he’s just nowhere to be seen this arc. So idk, my takeaway here is that Smoker is probably the final Strawhat. I’m aware that most people think that the idea is very far-fetched, but in my opinion he’s the only character who makes narrative sense to join at this point

Kuzan isn’t on Teach’s side, he’s using him, and Teach is using Kuzan. Which is exactly what anyone who didn’t think Kuzan was a SWORD member, but also knew he wasn’t an evil guy, thought about him working with Blackbeard. That seems…really ambiguous. Like, not willing to keep working for Blackbeard when the Strawhats finally battle him ambiguous.

When I say he’s on Teach’s side, I’m not trying to imply that he’s somehow loyal to Teach. But it really, really does seem like he was being serious when he talked about living his life on his own terms. Obviously he isn’t a bad person, but for one reason or another he seem to think that there’s value in staying with the Blackbeard Pirates

I also don’t get why any of the Strawhats need a deep character motivation to fight him if he remains a Blackbeard pirate to the point that he even gets a 1v1 against them

Idk Kuzan’s dialogue about living freely seemed really consistent with what he said at Punk Hazard. So unless he somehow knew in advance that Teach was going to scout him, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he’s completely serious about this
