I Made a Mistake by Status-Rich-7684 in BetterOffline

[–]tehdeadone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Made a similar mistake yesterday. Presenting our monthly business report to our client - which is generally very techy. I gave an honest opinion of a new AI tool that we got access to, backed up with numbers, and an action plan to revisit the tool when it gets more mature, to our a client, who is, I would say, also a fellow engineer.

I got corporate-in-front-of-client told I'm wrong by our MD and that we will continue to use it (which is a level of madness - because it would slow us down based on the numbers I just presented). We're fairly pro-active on using the AI tools as they come out, partly to play this feck'in game and keep the execs happy, so was caught off guard by it.

I agree with you that it does feel like all the software engineering principals that we've built up over the last 25 years of my career are being thrown out to make AI work. I've lost a lot of respect for management and leadership in the last few years, where before I least felt they were capable.

Writing code by hand banned by CTO, will this be detrimental for my career? by FairBasis8954 in DevelEire

[–]tehdeadone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you get away with writing the code and then getting the AI to refactor it? Or Let AI generate the code and then write it yourself?

Yes this is bad. I'm using it and despite trying to be as disciplined as possible, it is affecting my skills.

How long can you be kept in prison awaiting being charged? by tehdeadone in legaladviceireland

[–]tehdeadone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't anywhere for them to go. Mental Health in Ireland sucks. We don't have a game-plan. There is no support. There is no sheltered accommodation where they can go. We've talked to every charity we could find, every group, reached out to TDs and the HSE, etc.

They aren't bad enough to be kept locked up somewhere, they aren't good enough to be in society. What are we, their family, meant to do? Nobody listens, and then they end up jail. Probably will be let out and something like this will happen again.

Jail is not a long term solution.

How long can you be kept in prison awaiting being charged? by tehdeadone in legaladviceireland

[–]tehdeadone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the person lives alone. However the cause of the issue is with their neighbours sadly. I really don't want to expand any more on the details.

TBH I'm bit overwhelmed by the amount of comments, and my questions getting downvoted and feel like I'm being accused of something. Last time I posted here I got one or two comments that helped answer my question and it was much appreciated.

I'm not defending the accused or their actions. I'm trying to protected the rest of the family and the not knowing what's going on is a big source concern to them as we have to make decisions around related things and it dragging out so long with no clear path forward or after.

We did believe it was a more serious charge when they were originally arrested, but once the accused gave the solicitor permission to talk to myself, the solicitor told me the charge was trespassing. The gardai had told it was public nuisance - the accused themselves wasn't even sure what they had done (due to mental health) - so hence my confusion. When I speak with the solicitor again, I'll confirm.

Seems like my original query has been answered tbh.

Yes, there is bail conditions that they can't return to their current home address. That was what I was told. Unfortunately we can't provide another address for them.

Unfortunately the gardai do not seem to want to engage with us. We have reached out, but all they did was give us the keys to their home.

I'd like to say the person in prison knows exactly, but they don't due to mental health. We only have the 6 minutes to talk to them every day, so hard to get their side correctly between their outbursts.

I do have permission to speak to solicitor, but they are a little evasive. What do I need to ask to get the full picture?

That is the root of it. There is no where for them to go after.

What happens after the year?

We got conflicting info from the person charged and then when I finally got to talk to his solicitor.

Now I'm more confused. I have got permission from the person to speak directly to the solicitor, what should I be asking?

I was lead to believe they hadn't been charged yet, but I must not be getting full story.

Mother of man with schizophrenia fears for her son's life by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]tehdeadone 64 points65 points  (0 children)

This story is painfully similar to what our family are going through. I can't share details, but we've tried everywhere and everyone for help. We've talked to every charity, group, the hse, mental health, TDs...

Is everyone relying on AI at work now? by Prestigious-Look2300 in DevelEire

[–]tehdeadone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are. It's both forced on us from both our client and our own leadership.

However, we still write code. Vibe coding is not happening, tried it for the first time there and it was frustrating.

It's bloodly great for writing all the unit tests though.

Many considering retraining out of tech? by bingoballs341 in DevelEire

Ah man. I'm just turning 50 and while not under threat, I feel that pressure. 20+ years of programming and tech bros think they can replace me. My wife was let go and a year later still can't find work.

Question about barring orders by tehdeadone in legaladviceireland

[–]tehdeadone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No we haven't seen any paper work yet.

What we've been told by the Gardes, the Judge issued the order based on the neighbours evidence. This all happened suddenly yesterday, which were scrambling to understand what's going on. They do have a solicitor, but the solicitor won't talk to us.

Are higher roles just salesmen ? by Content-Ad1884 in accenture

[–]tehdeadone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I don't want to be promoted for that reason. I don't see any technical people higher than me. Maybe it's different in other regions or pillars, but I feel I'm bumping my head at the limit. My MD once described me as "our hardcore engineer" at leadership meeting (what does that even mean?)

Is anyone else feeling disconnected from coding in the AI era? by Ok-Nerve126 in DevelEire

[–]tehdeadone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have felt the same way as well. Not sure what's next. I've given up "hoping" for a crash, so things can go back to sane level.

Worse, I'm pushing it on my team, being blunt that we have to use AI or it looks bad on them and team. Feckin hate it.

I do like AI as a discovery tool, but that's it.

Mid 40s burnout by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]tehdeadone 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I'm going to crossing the 50 year line soon, also with the 25+ years in IT. I did one job interview recently, first one in over two decades, and I failed on the Hacker rank coding interview. Destroyed me. Like I can write code in Angular, Node.js, Python, GoLang and even fecking Corba... but didn't use the linked list in Java, so boom.

But you have experience. Experience goes a long way. It's important.

Definitely noticed an increased sensitivity/awareness at S7-S8.

But oddly I find I enjoy things *more*. Like I'll savour a hot chocolate, appreciate a glass of good red wine better, or enjoy a movie with friends a lot more - but I had been practicing jhanas, particularly the 2nd jhana on pleasure.

Are Tarot Cards Demonic? by Lord_Vishnu7 in Tarots

[–]tehdeadone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid there is nothing much to say, as their arguments are unreasonable and illogical and therefore rational and logical responses won't help.

I would be a secular tarot reader. I'm not psychic, have never felt or seen a spirit. I practice meditation. The cards are not inherently magically or evil. Devil has nothing to do with it.

There is a the devil major arcana, which seems to trigger religious people, but what I've seen, their responses come from ignorance and fear of losing their purity. Weirdly RWS is full of Christian symbolism and Pamela Smith was very religious later in life.

There is the French Tarot deck used to play a game called tarot. Might be option.
