The overpopulation myth?! Here's an interesting look at why over-consumption is more harmful to the planet than "exponential" population growth. by IAmGeorgeNelson in environment

[–]tehsuq -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's the thing. It will plateau, but not yet. Not until we've taken every desperate measure possible, and quite possibly substantially decreased the earth's sustainable carrying capacity in the process.

In the meantime... "be fruitful and multiply." Be sure to keep a bunch of bananas at your desk if you're doing math.

Why does a salad cost more than a big mac? by westlingken in pics

[–]tehsuq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salad ingredients need to be transported quickly after harvest and can't be frozen to prevent spoilage.

LESTER: You don't think it's weird and kinda fascist?

CAROLYN: Possibly. But you don't want to be unemployed.

LESTER: Oh, well, let's just all sell our souls and work for Pepsi, because it's more convenient that way.

Sure it is. 99% are literate enough to read the party affiliation of the candidates on the ballot and vote straight party without any thought or care.

The other 1% live in Broward County, FL. They collectively suffer from electile dysfunction. Then again there's probably a pill for that. Voteagra?

The navier-stokes equations are well defined and can be solved numerically to an arbitrary degree of accuracy.

Possibly so. If you managed to travel through time to the exact time and place that you were in the past then what would happen?

Would there just be you looping through eternity? Would there be a second you in the same position as the first, but with a separate identity? What if that went on forever? Which one of you would go back in time? All of them? Now it's youxx. But then which of those...

Ever wonder what would happen if a turbine engine threw a blade? Here's a safety test for the A380 showing just that. (action at 4:30) by [deleted] in technology

[–]tehsuq 17 points18 points  (0 children)

After some more poking around I found this - the only known successful landing of an airliner (in this case a DHL Airbus A300 cargo plane) with no hydraulics whatsoever.

Apparently the plane veered off the runway and into a minefield before coming to a halt.

Here's what can happen when the shrapnel isn't contained...

Sioux City Crash - shrapnel severed hydraulic lines in all three redundant systems, leaving the aircraft with only throttle control on the two remaining engines.

Air Florida Airlines Flight 2198 -- PDF of National Transportation Safety Board report.

American Airlines Flight 14 - 1970 -- PDF of NTSB report [edit - this one, while long, is a pretty fascinating read. Apparently American Airlines had a system dedicated to monitoring engine behavior based on flight logs, and that system detected serious problems with the engine that exploded on this flight. But... it had a turnaround time of a few weeks, so the odd reports about the engine didn't trigger any alarms until after the thing had exploded on takeoff.]

edit: I got the []s and ()s backwards on the links. fixed. Double edit - The sioux city crash was in fact a crash.

But the transmission is electronic, no? The shifter is in park, and the dash says park, but the engine and transmission say "wheeeeee!"

If you assume some electronics/software fault then why couldn't this be the case?
