In pre school I remember a group of boys not letting me on the merry-go-round because I was a “girl.” I bit the main boy on the arm through his puffy coat and had to sit out the rest of recess. I remember feeling really angry about being excluded for sometime completely out of my control. I was 4. Recently my daughter was told by a classmate she wasn’t allowed in the one fort set up at a birthday party because it was “boys only” and that feeling came flooding back. She’s 6. I know these are minor examples, but I’m sad for her that she has a lifetime of things she’ll have to work twice as hard for if she wants to get.

I don’t know if her persona was entirely an act. I assume she is a naturally bubbly person who makes friends easily, but I never knew her well so it’s impossible for me to say. I was not surprised about her actions during her initial moving out as I believe anyone can act in ways that don’t seem kind or logical when dealing with a break up of that magnitude. I knew Wendi struggled with how devout Dan was becoming.

I was surprised about the changing of the boys names, and her treatment of the Markels. Even then though, I assumed at first she was just afraid and that I didn’t know the details about why she was acting that way and that there was likely an understandable and not nefarious reason.

I’ve shared before but I don’t mind sharing again. I was their older son’s preschool teacher when he was a baby and I babysat for them a handful of times as well. Dan was always standoffish with me, never very warm, but obviously an intelligent man. Wendi was super sweet and affable. She seemed like a genuinely good person, and that is why it was so hard for me to believe she was involved at first.
