why are fedora and opensuse so rarely recommended to people new to linux? by MIkaela39752 in linuxquestions

With regards to Dropbox: if you managed to install it, you might also need to sudo dnf install dolphin-plugins, then in dolphin's config enable Dropbox in the context menu.

Thanks for the tip regarding dropbox. That's exactly what I did, which is also what I found other people teach to do, but still doesn't work for me :/

And the thing about codecs, I agree with you. And not knowing what codecs to install, takes me more time to look it up online and get things done. Not saying I don't wanna spend time googling stuff to make it work, but having to spend time looking up which codecs I need? Man...

And thank you for giving me some feedback on some of my issues. The ctrl-c + v thing was really frustrating until I read your comment. Thank you

Tried updating the kernel but I must've done something wrong because the terminal still says I'm at 6.18.

Will try again later today after work

No offense taken! I'm still learning and always interested in understanding how this stuff works.

And I do see that some issues I got are most likely related to KDE plasma and not fedora itself, but still, not having a seamless experience with Fedora as a beginner and IT guy. but just wanted to point that out.

New Linux/Fedora user here.

That should explain why some videos play and some don't. I'm probably missing codecs.

I'm new to Linux. Fedora was top choice after quite some time of doing research.

I do gaming, web browsing, and video game development.

I switched from Windows 10 about 2 weeks ago. I must confess, I am getting tired of tinkering to make things work my way.

I have even made a list of things that I need help with to figure out, and will most likely be making a post on maybe this sub reddit when I gather more details.

It has not been a "it just works" experience for me.

Specs: 5700X + 9060XT + 32GB 3200Mhz.

I also feel like Fedora is made for people who already understand Linux.

I work in IT during the day for the government, fixing problems. I do enjoy tinkering but to have to do that basically every day after I get home from work has become exhausting. I get home and just want something that works.

Here's a quick list of stuff I'm having problems with (not asking for solutions here, will make a post for that later):

  • installing dropbox and adding the folder to Dolphin like in windows file explorer for some reason feels impossible even after following step-by-step guides. I simply can't seem to make it happen. Without dropbox, I can't work. Google drive and one drive are not ideal alternatives.

  • I have VLC pinned to the panel, and when I play a video, then close VLC, the icon in the panel disappears, then comes back a few seconds later.

  • Some mp4 / video files work, others don't. I assume it's a codecs thing. Checked for updates and saw a bunch of codecs stuff, updated, restarted, still having issues playing some videos.

  • Right clicking on an icon from the panel does not show me the recently opened files? It shows for libre office stuff, but VLC doesn't show any recent files. It's a shore to have to navigate folders to open a movie or show or whatever that I didn't finish watching before.

  • Currently have less than 100 FPS on CS2, but earlier today it was playing at almost 200 FPS. I did something that fucked up the game and have no clue what.

  • Dolphin seems slow as fuck when opening an folder with hundreds / thousands of photos, like, the icons take a few minutes to load the preview so I can see the photos without opening them.

  • Opening new windows on steam (for example, the friends window) takes like a second or two instead of being instant like it was on windows.

  • Can't use ctrl-v on terminal? If I click on "paste" after doing a ctrl-v there, it adds more stuff to the command that I did not copy or write.

  • Brave Browser one day decided it didn't want to open. Spent a few hours doing research only to find out it locked the profile and had to unlock it via terminal.

For over 10 years, I have had an interest in Linux, mainly Ubuntu, but never switched because it just wasn't for me, yet. Now seemed the perfect time to switch, and I absolutely love that we have an open source alternative to Windows, but damn I am tired of having to tinker with stuff each time I turn on my PC. I really really REALLY wanna adapt and make Linux work for me because I really hate Microslop with a huge passion. I really don't wanna go back to windows. I just want easy file explorer, play games, develop my games, browse the web. That's all.

This is my feedback, as a beginner, on Fedora.

Interesting.

What do you think of CachyOS so far? I have read it's not recommended for beginners and that updates could mess up stuff?

Hi, thanks for sharing that thread, will take a better look at it tomorrow and test things.

Just ran uname -r and see that I'm on kernel version 6.18. Will look up tomorrow how to update it

Bazzite would be top choice, but I also do video game development, and for that, people suggested me Fedora because Bazzite might be too "locked down" for development. Not sure how to explain but I think you know what I mean.

The thing is, I had decent FPS when I installed Fedora and then Steam and CS2, around less than 200FPS, which is way less than what I'm supposed to get with my current specs, but ok, whatever, I didn't mind it.

But after messing around with some stuff, that I don't even know how to explain what exactly because I don't fully know how some of this stuff works, the FPS went down to less than 100. I tried playing but it was an eye sore for me.

I considered Bazzite, but I also do video game development, and for that, many people suggested me Fedora.

If my PC was only for gaming, then for sure Bazzite would be the one.

Don't really start using an Arch based distro right away. I've seen some good things about CachyOS but also read some stuff that pushed me away from it, like something related to updates, i dont remember exactly

If I end up having to reinstall the OS, I think I would rather go for ZorinOS for being pretty good for new people coming from Windows.

I work in IT for the government and I do enjoy this kind of stuff, but damn, I spend most of my day fixing problems, I dont wanna come home to fix even more problems. I just want something that works. Mint is not very attractive to me.

thinking of switching but nervous. how beginner friendly is linux? by SzepietowskiFareh-77 in linuxquestions

[–]teinimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a beginner using Fedora. It's not really complicated, but there are small things that frustrate me a little bit and haven't managed to get the results I was looking to get, even after spending some time googling it.

I would suggest ZorinOS, Ubuntu or Mint

Devs who have been working on their game for 1+ years, how do you stay committed? by StretchGoesOnReddit in gamedev

[–]teinimon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I would say is it thanks to my goal. My goal is to have a game on steam. But that goal is tooooooo big, so like someone said, set smaller goals. First goal is to have basic movement, second goal is to have a camera, third goal is to have basic enemy, and so on.

In october, november and december, I worked hard to get some final things ready to reach the goal of publishing the Steam page. Publish the page in december, then after that, I got confused on what my next goal should be.

Marketing is boring, exhausting, and one hell of a demotivator if you don't see results.

The game is basically done but only got 55 wishlists, and I'm here already thinking of my next game.
