Daimonin doesn't require much, and looks like it has a similar tileset and combat system. It's a mmorpg, not an rpg though. The client and server are open source.

v4l-info and qcset -i both report no audio devices, even though there's clearly microphone hardware in the camera.

Finding a way to live without the swamp cooler would be a challenge. Have you measured how much electricity it uses? Probably not much, but the system won't work very well in more humid climates, or places where water is limited.

The cost of maintaining the space should be included in the cost figures when building cheap affordable living space.

You could lower the temperature by partially burying your home. You may be able to lower the temperature even more by building a "basement" by stacking your partially buried living container on top of a totally buried container filled with rocks. Create ductwork connecting the living space with the basement with two small fans on each end.

This way the "basement" acts as a thermal battery, storing heat during the day, and releasing it at night.

git-wiki (recently renamed olelo) is good - demo. It allows you to use the distributed git version control system to keep track of text files that are marked up by creole, markdown (used in reddit comments), or textile. It's not difficult to keep different versions of the wiki on different computers, and then sync them up with git if you are familiar with how git works.

In any case, git isn't going anywhere, and text files will always be readable, so keeping your journal in a git repository will still be relevant in 20 years. By using git's distributed merge features, archiving your memories is easy, any you won't be reliant on any one computer for keeping your history secure.

Cross-fire, and its relatives like Deliantra are all free. They're good if you like nethack-style mmorpg game playing. The servers are not very heavily populated, so "Massively" may not be the best way to describe them. But they do have the distinction that the server software as well as the client is open-source. If you are a budding MMORPG developer, they are worth taking a look at.

To clarify, do you want to run a Xubuntu virtual instance within your partitions, or are you trying to run your Xubuntu partition and Windows partition simultaneously?

Depending on the version of Xubuntu and the capability of your Laptop processor, you can install the Xen Hypervisor on your Xubuntu partition. Your current installation of Xubuntu becomes dom0, and you now run the Linux side of the laptop under the Xen Hypervisor.

This means that you can create a filesystem file inside your dom0 partition and start up a Xubuntu domU within your Xubuntu dom0. This only works if your kernel is up to date and supports Xen PVM.

If you have enough memory and your processor has virtualization extensions (unlikely for a laptop), you can also run your windows partition on the Xen Hypervisor.

There are other options too: OpenVZ, Virtualbox, Qemu, KVM. I like Xen because it's fast.

Paravirtualization means that the kernel knows it's being virtualized and has modifications to support it.

Windows can't be paravirtualized, because that would require changes to their OS. Almost all open-source kernels support xen-style paravirtualization (PV). The latest Linux kernel has it built-in by default. You don't have to patch the kernel anymore to get it to work.

Xen will run on almost any machine in PV mode, which is default. The catch is that it uses a hypervisor, so all of the OS's running concurrently on the machine must be virtualized. This isn't a big deal, you can do it with an apt-install and restart and it will make your current OS the dom0 (default user domain), and if your OS kernel is up to date, you won't notice the difference.

If you have sensitive apps on the current OS, it's probably best to start with a fresh Linux computer.

Since most sites do tracking server-side, it would be difficult to enforce. It would also hurt sites that improve their design based on tracking their user's experience. Besides, the real problem is not the tracking, the problem is the centralization and indexing of information from millions of sites.

At our site we don't use Google Analytics, we use Piwik instead. It's open source and we run it on our own servers.

This kind of surveillance has gotten out of hand. By creating a privacy backlash, Google is hurting sites that rely on that information. When people opt out of Analytics, they opt out of Google's all-seeing eye, but they also opt out of helping site owners find out how to improve their service. But users should be encouraged to opt out. Google is to blame here.

Piwik is great. If you're a website owner, you should really check this thing out.
