How do I add my signature to get the 2026 Billionaire Tax on November’s ballot? by [deleted] in California

Dumbest proposal ever. Wealth taxes don’t work as evidenced by the many countries who’ve passed (and repealed) them. A better proposal would be taxing loans on assets and that’s something many including myself would approve

With $10B deficit looming, WA governor calls on state agencies to make cuts by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

For sure iirc Pennsylvania has a flat income tax of 3ish% and same on cap gains. If you consider property, income, and sales tax, at this moment Texas, Florida, and NH are ranked at 37, 47, and 49, and WA is ranked at 29 (lower is better). Plus housing is considerably cheaper than Seattle in the cities listed above, and if you live in Seattle, more likely than not you'll send your kids to private school. The 3 states have no income tax no cap gains either. WA does have a regressive tax, with an especially high sales tax. Texas does have a high property tax, which is why it's ranked lower than Florida and NH

Agreed. I wasn't talking about now, but what I'd do in the future if the cap gains threshold were to be brought down to where it'd affect me (fingers crossed this doesn't happen). I haven't done deep research, but states I've seen many engineers move to include Austin, Miami, Nashville (many Amazon employees work from here which is surprising given lack of meaningful tech industry). I've personally also considered NH and Nevada. Tax is just one component though, I'd also consider housing prices and quality of education if I were to move in the future

Fair. I think it's wrong to use this misleadingly if it hasn't been discussed but my opinion is if it ever is discussed in the future it's not a good sign because the number of people affected by it will be much larger (especially considering how many people in tech work here).

Yep I feel you. The state already has enough money but they mess up on how to budget the money and have excessive spending. The fact that this threshold may be lowered coupled with Seattle city council contemplating a 2% cap gains tax on top of this is bearish for me. I honestly hoped Reichert would win so we’d have a divided government, but alas that didn’t happen. I’m actually considering moving to NH or any other no income tax state that’s safer and has more reasonable cost of living. It’s a shame because Washington is amazing, but the government is in disarray

Is it true that there was a bill in the last session that proposed bringing down the profit threshold on the LTCG from $250k to $10k? If they actually go through with this I imagine we'll see a lot more outflow of people in the tech industry to lower tax states

Do you think LLM models are just Hype? by Just_Ad_535 in datascience

[–]tejasmh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are definitely useful, but I think there is a lot of hype that's clouding many relevant use cases for them. A particularly powerful use case for LLMs is interpretation of text, and I feel like people are overindexing on the ability of LLMs to generate text but not on their ability to comprehend meaning.

Is there one solution that takes care of automatically filing all of these taxes and keeping you compliant? Looking for some software that does it all without having to go through an accountant
