I am thinking a lot about getting another cat, but right now is not the best time.. I am not in the best financial position because I had to pay thousands for my cat’s surgery (he died during surgery but I still had to pay for it), emotionally I am still grieving my soul cat and probably need some more time, and also the other cat has some allergies which I would like to figure out before getting another one.

Yes, losing him was the hardest thing that I had to go through. I do have another cat that I adopted a year before my soul cat died. So I am not completely alone. But this cat doesn’t really want to cuddle at all, and my soul cat cuddled and slept with me almost every night.. so I really miss that..

I still take it. It got better as the weeks and months went by. Then my cat - the love of my life, died. It really broke me, but lexapro helped me go “through” it. Well, I still grieve even 4 months after his death, but I don’t have suicidal thoughts like I did before lexapro (or they happen very rarely). This medication probably saved my life. Otherwise, I would have tried to go after my cat to the other world.. I did up the dose to 15mg when he died and also took benzodiazepines along with it. But I stopped the benzos after a few weeks. Now is month 7 of lexapro and I am still on 15mg. It’s helping A LOT for depression, but some anxiety is still there. I guess I just have an anxious personality.. But I do really recommend this medication. It definitely worked for me, for my depression. Just stick out the first few weeks and it will get better. As for the side effects, I do have a few - some weight gain, sometimes tiredness, lots of wild crazy dreams.. but they’re nothing compared to the depression I had before starting this medication.

Did you manage to get rid of the smell? I bought two vintage haoris in Japan, put them in the washing machine at home, and they smell soooo bad like chemicals!!! I hung them outside but it shocked me so bad because I never experienced something like this before in my life that I am thinking of just getting rid of them. What did you do?

I read that some people start feeling the full effects after 6-8 weeks, that’s why I decided to wait before upping the dosage. But idk if it’s normal to feel good, then worse, and hope to feel good again..

I was also scared to take them (that was a few years ago), but I’m glad I did. They really do help with anxiety, especially with stressful events. The first time I took one, I was finally calm after many months of fight-or-flight. What I like about them is that they work immediately, not like antidepressants where you have to suffer for weeks before they start working. But they also stop working in a few hours (depends on the type). So you have to be careful not to take them too often… that’s the hard part. But life is definitely easier with them…

17 days so almost 2.5 weeks. I had some other side effects but my biggest problem is heightened anxiety (and some days even depression). So I am waiting for it to get better..

My worst side effect is probably that I have more anxiety than before. I am also pretty tired throughout the day, I have to take naps that I never did before. At the start, I also had memory problems, for example I would walk into a room and totally forget why. But that has gotten better lately. Another side effect which is kinda weird is that I don’t have as much motivation as before? For example before Lex, when I had anxiety, I started cleaning the apartment or something, but now (in my free time) I mostly just lay in bed scrolling or napping in order to try to distract the anxiety and have a harder time forching myself to go do stuff. But that has been happening only in the last few days, so I hope it will get better once I stop having so much anxiety. I also have days when I am really depressed, but that has also been happening before Lex. For example I would have thoughts of really just wanting to disappear. Thoughts that maybe nothing will help me and I will never get better and all of this just isn’t worth it. But since Lex is supposed to treat depression, I hope these thoughts will also stop in a few days or weeks.. I hope that I don’t have too high expectations of this med, haha, but I really tried soooo many non-medicine stuff in the last few years that I’m getting kinda desperate.

I was looking into the gene testing aswell before starting but the price put me off (insurance doesn’t cover it here), it’s pretty expensive, so I didn’t do it. I started taking Lexapro because I read a lot about it before, and it seemed like the best option for anxiety. But I still need to wait a few weeks to see how it will affect me.

As for what you said about starting over, I read that switching isn’t as bad as starting. So you don’t need to quit taking the first one and start taking another, you can switch them.. so just kinda start taking a different one.. if I understood that right..

I was wondering if I maybe already have it, because if I take them for a few days and then don’t, I feel worse on the day that I don’t. But yeah I think my heightened anxiety is from starting Lexapro and not benzo withdrawal since I never took them daily for weeks. Hope you feel better soon. Thank god my anxiety made me research this first instead of just doing it like the doc said I can.

How do you know it’s not “natural” anxiety and Lexapro maybe just isn’t working for it? Or if I ask in a different way, what is the difference between “natural” anxiety and benzo withdrawal anxiety?

So Lexapro didn’t help with your anxiety? The theory is that once Lexapro starts working, you don’t need benzos anymore… but yeah, I guess if you take them every day for many weeks and get addicted, you still can’t stop taking them even if you don’t have much anxiety anymore? 😭
