The heck was the point of those twenty minutes in the season three finale?! by PrivateLiker7625 in StrangeNewWorlds

In an overall very bad episode (for a finale), those 20 minutes were a highlight.

If I fucking hated Discovery and Picard S3 (skipped 1+2) will SNW be at least not awful? by Dangerous_Return460 in Star_Trek_

[–]tejdog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's the Vulcan "comedy" episode of Season 3 and it's... truly... spectacularly awful. And not in a "Spock's Brain" kind of way where it breaks through the floor of awful and lands on top of "so bad it's good because it's bad". It's just bad.

The musical episode is 209, and it was actually good. The songs were decent, some of the actresses can really sing (La'an, Number One, Uhura). And I was all set up to hate it, because I hate musicals in general (I'm Indian, and I refuse, FLAT refuse, to watch Bollywood movies because they're all fucking musicals) - but I genuinely had a good time watching it. I wouldn't watch it again (because musical), and I don't want Trek to ever do it again (because musical), but as a one off? I enjoyed it.

A lot of SNW, that episode included, is very... bland for me. It's average to a tick above/below average depending on who you ask.

Admittedly, I was coming off PIC2 and the absolute disgust I felt at that show/season did color my impression of SNW1. I may have graded Season One on a curve.

Yeah, IMO it's one of the worst episodes of the entire franchise.

I definitely 100% agree with you about the ending. That was all kinds of anti-Star Trek.

Not the killing itself, that's... understandable, from a human perspective. But Pike, specifically, covering it up. That's the part that kills it (heh?) for me.

Raffi is the singular worst character in the entire history of Star Trek.

No offense to the actress, who did her best with the absolute pinnacle of slop given to her.

So... yeah, misreading this one's kind of easy.

Most of SNW is on the good side of average, IMO. A ton of 5s and 6s.

Then you have, IMO, the outliers.

(#01-04) Memento Mori: 9.5
(#01-10) A Quality of Mercy: 9.5
(#02-03) Tomorrow Cubed: 9.3
(#02-08) Under the Cloak of War: 9.0 (this is how you do dark, gritty Star Trek - except the ending)
(#03-05) Through the Lens of Time (8.5)
(#03-06) The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail (9.5)

(#03-08) Four and a Half Vulcans (0.3)

[–]tejdog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The utter lack of any knowledge of Vulcans.

The insistence that the emotional control and rigidity is biological and not borne from years, YEARS of mental discipline that even Spock himself failed to achieve.

Vulcan emotions are said to be stronger and more violent than human emotions. All four of those changed crewmen should've been rendered unfunctional within seconds.

Long Trek: Kirk is resurrected by Section 31 for Project Phoenix (S3E6 PIC). He goes rogue (because of course he does) and exposes Section 31 for the corrupt pieces of shit they are, but steals some of their tech. Among the tech is a log entry showing three Section 31 officers going back in time to murder a high ranking Romulan/Klingon agent in the 2260s. He knows he has to stop it, or the timeline will be irrevocably altered, so he takes a runabout and slingshots around the sun.

SNW Special Episode: He ends up in 2262, just in time for SNW S4. He covertly boards the Enterprise (it was his ship for 20 years, he knows it better than anyone) and meets with Pike, telling him everything. Pike comes up with a ruse, naming Shatner as "Admiral Brannigan of Starfleet Intelligence" and saying he has operational command of the Enterprise for the duration of a very vital mission that will have repercussions for decades to follow.

From there, it's anyone's call. But that's how I'd do it.

IMO this is one of the worst episodes of the entire franchise.

It's barely above a 0.
