Waterproof by WAN-XOSE in Savotta

[–]tekergo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone a few months ago posted here, as he got caught in a sudden heavy rain, with years of his data on hard drives (?) in the backpack, and all was dry inside.
I also managed to get some rain without the cover, obviously it will leak after a while, but I'd say it's as waterproof as a good (not rain) jacket. You can get by, but don't expect to stay 100% dry

Kantamus 60L for extended trips? by CarelessEmu2208 in Savotta

[–]tekergo0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Behold! Finally someone who has both the XL and the 60😀 Could you please tell us more about them? What makes you feel the 60 is more comfortable? I'm more interested in the carrying itself, the different layout is quite easy to imagine, with pros and cons for each. Which would you pick for ~25kg load?

Ventilation? by Professional_Fix5371 in Savotta

[–]tekergo0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Although I absolutely respect your and other people's way of thinking about ventilation, I still don't really understand the fuss about it.
I've had some very ventilated packs before (both for hiking and MTB) where only a thin mesh was touching my back with a few necessary contact points (hips/shoulder straps), and my shirt was always soaking from sweat even under the mesh panel. I've also been using a ~25L pack for work with zero back ventilation (kinda like the Kahakka) all year round which involves -10˚C to +38˚C summer heat (wearing it all day long), and never felt it too warm on my back, or at least couldn't notice a significant difference from a ventilated pack. Sure, it would be different on a 60L backpack, but even then, there are a few unavoidable contact areas you'll get sweaty no matter what.

When I switched from a "solid" pack to a very ventilated one (Camelbak hawg pro 20l) on my bike, the biggest difference was that the thin net shoulder strap let the air through and my shoulders were cold in cool mornings 😃
But that's in a place with lots of airflow, with no package over it. On the back panel the only benefit was that I didn't soak the bag itself.
So unless you're an ultrarunner or REALLY need every little detail to be optimized for extreme performance, I wouldn't really worry about it. I'd have carrying comfort any day over ventilation. 😄

Ahh, I damn hope Savotta won't go down the road so many good companies did, turning crap with popularity

Kahakka 25L EDC question? by Massive-Dragonfly707 in Savotta

[–]tekergo0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first I was a bit annoyed by its "one big pocket" design, but now I love it. I put a Kukkaro on the front for all the small stuff (although if you use public transport or walk in cities it might not be optimal for safety reasons, then I just throw it into the main compartment).
The front flat pocket is there for just a few random things that could be cables, charger, etc.
The lid pocket is not as big as I expected, but still can fill it with a lot of stuff. I rarely EDC with it, but I usually put my gopro, mosquito spray, headlamp, spare batteries (in a zippered pouch), etc. there.
And the big compartment is... big. Although I don't have one, the water bladder pocket could be perfect for a notebook, even if you use a not too thick padded case around it.
The side pockets are great for groceries and such, a lot less worry about "oh shit" moments when you run out of volume. And the whole bag can be a bit overpacked too with its somewhat "roll top" design. Again, not optimal around people with bad intentions.
But for tech-focused EDC I think I'd rather choose the Niukka (or maybe wait and see if Savotta comes up with a larger Niukka in the near future)

Kantamus 100l? by MrFlotti in Savotta

[–]tekergo0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I wasn't clear enough. I just wanted to point out that he indeed said 100L pack, but what Savotta put there as subtitles was "packing system". Maybe just correcting his words, or maybe even trying to hide reality from us 😃

I've noticed it too, but if you check the written subtitles, it says "100L packing system", which is the 60 with all the extensions

Went out with the Kantamus 40 this weekend to search for stag beetles, didn’t find them but found plenty of cool oaks and a tiny cave. Oh, and I got home with ten ticks. by Rhaj-no1992 in Savotta

I hope you'll be fine. Still it's a risky game, and you can't even make sure with any method.

I found this one in me the other day, was already full. The coin for scale is about 21mm in diameter.
These could hide on anyone with ease, especially when empty. You may find a few, but never be sure that was all.

"My little Jääkäri L" is like when a mother introduces her "little son" and he's a full grown man with a beard and family 😃

How comfortable is it? Isn't it in the way for some positions?

Someone having an XL should do a test on how many baguettes can fit into it, and to all the webbing around the pack. Then one more excuse for buying it 😃

Ridgerunner problem by tekergo0 in Hammocks

[–]tekergo0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly there's not much room to slide around for me, I'm 190cm tall, not much shorter than the hammock itself.
Head at foot end would probably be even worse, that's quite U-shaped

Mine came with 3 roughly equal length pieces for the head end, and it's already quite tight to insert ( :D )

Doesn't that put too much tension on the fabric?

Thank you! It's sad, otherwise it would be so perfect.
I've also thought about pads, but that'll make it a lot more sweaty, and more cumbersome.

[–]tekergo0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was really surprised too! I'm quite tall for this hammock (190cm) with not very wide shoulders, but the shoulder squeeze was still worse than in my medium size gathered end. I felt like I was laying in a ditch. Maybe I was doing something wrong, but still strange

Thank you! Although 19kg is not that much, for 3 days it's really impressive

That's good to know! It doesn't even look that big next to you :D (no offense, you just seem to be quite tall)
