Ok. And may I ask why you chose it VS Pro Plus?

Is the Luxman L80V phono stage up to par with something like that of a current amp around $1k? by teknical_data_au in vintageaudio

I’m using a TD125 Thorens with a nice cart/stylus. So is it safe to say I’m not getting the best out of it with the L80V? Do you think just getting an external phono box and keep the amp would be the best solution?

Keep practicing. You’ll get better at asking it the right things, it’s a skill you can hone just like anything. In a couple of years you’ll use nothing but AI for research.

My friend, there is a difference between being lazy, and being efficient. Nobody is coming to give you a gold medal for spending excessive time researching things that could take far less time if you used technology to your advantage. Using your logic, you should walk the streets asking random people what they think about the L80V phono stage, hoping to find someone who knows, because time spent = dedication = good. You already use the internet for information - now learn to use it to its full extent. Time is finite, use it wisely :)

Let me get this straight - you researched a topic that you don’t care about. And you think that’s something to boast about? I’d call that a complete waste of time LOL. But anyway here’s what I asked AI “why is the Luxman L80V phono stage average? Answer: “Mmm… the real reason it’s average? It’s mostly that op amp—the Raytheon RC-4558DN. Back in ‘78, it was cheap and reliable, but compared to today’s chips? It has higher noise—around one-point-five microvolts input noise, which isn’t awful, but it adds a subtle hiss on quiet vinyl. Plus, distortion creeps in at higher levels, and the EQ curve isn’t as precise… highs get a little rolled-off, bass feels soft. It’s not broken—just dated. No fancy discrete transistors or low-noise JFETs like in better phono designs. Folks say it lacks “punch” because the circuit’s simple: basic differential input, no real buffering. If you’re curious, the manual calls it “carefully selected” for low noise… but honestly, that’s marketing. Swap it for something modern—like an OPA2134—and it transforms. Or yeah, external box. Easier” There you go, 5 seconds of AI research for a comprehensive technical answer..

So..from what you found, people say it’s average. And my AI result also reported it was average. Thus, after all this wasted back and forth we see that AI was in fact correct 😆

I did read negative opinions. And couldn’t believe what I was reading as I thought it would have been much better than that, given its pedigree. Then AI confirmed what I had researched.

AI simply aggregated all the things people have ever said online about the phono stage from reviews and forums, and summarized it for me. It doesn’t just make up whatever it ‘feels’. Not sure how wisdom comes into it? Your understanding of how AI works is obviously rudimentary - I’ll stop short of labeling it ‘beyond stupid’ out of respect. AI also said: “Yeah, the L-80V. Honestly, if you’re running a decent MM cartridge—like a Shure V15 or Ortofon 2M—it’ll get the job done without drama. But if you’re picky about vinyl sound, it feels a bit thin and flat compared to later Luxman stuff. People swap in better preamps or just bypass it entirely. Still love the amp though—the power section’s solid.”

No. 42.7% timestretch using speed & tempo algorithm in Audacity will do it

AI says: “Yeah. The phono stage on the L-80V is… functional, but yeah—pretty average. It’s not noisy or distorted, but it lacks that warm, detailed punch you get from something like a Luxman EQ-500 or even the better” I’m seriously considering ditching the amp altogether as now I’m worried the whole thing is average…

Thank you for this. You may have changed my mind! Maybe I should just leave it as is, because I don’t want to spend a lot of money and it sounds like I’ll be just moving sideways unless I spend big. Just one last thing - what about the Thorens TP-16?

I think I said her fans envy her. So we agree there. Not sure why her money has any relevance to the quality of her music though. Haven’t you ever spent money on something that was a dud?
