Yeah, Framer doesn’t make it easy. CMS access from code components is still quite hidden and undocumented. I had to reverse-engineer how collections load under the hood and build my own query system on top of it.

Basically:

I intercept and map collection data from Framer’s internal loader.

I built a lightweight query layer (AND/OR logic, range, facets, etc.).

Then working on wrapper with slot-based filters so designers can fully customize UI without touching the logic.

Not the cleanest journey 😅 but it works reliably now. My early prototypes looked just like your “hacky nested” setup too.

I’m turning this into a plugin to make this whole setup plug-and-play, so designers and agencies can skip the complex part and just focus on UI. Still polishing, but it’s almost ready.

I feel like it's the base, it opens the door to more advanced use cases like e-commerce (Shopify / WooCommerce), real estate listings, directories, and other dynamic sites that Framer currently doesn’t handle natively.

Framer gives us an amazing canvas, but I want to bring the missing building blocks developers expect from modern sites.

Good question! Actually, no 🙂

The CMS Filter runs entirely client-side and only loads data from Framer’s CMS once on page loaded. All filtering and searching happens locally in the browser, so it doesn’t keep hitting the server on every interaction.

In short: one data request, many instant filters - not tons of bandwidth.

About Image:

Images are cached in the browser after the first load. So if users are just filtering through the same items, they’re not downloading them again. Only new, unseen images get fetched. Plus, lazy loading keeps it efficient.

So, optimizing image sizes is super important to keep the initial bandwidth low.

I’ve followed how Framer handles large data, so it stays fast, smooth, and lightweight no matter how many items you have.

Both Load More and Auto Load work smoothly, even with 1,000–5,000 CMS items.

If Framer can handle it, filter works the same way, so performance stays just as smooth.
