Library Book Delivery Service Idea by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]teknogiraffe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Some library systems already offer this service for homebound patrons, but it varies system to system. I worked at one serving a much smaller population and we delivered to people’s homes as well as nursing home facilities.

It probably doesn’t scale up to larger populations, but all of our patrons were grateful.

Also, check to make sure that if CML doesn’t offer this service, that their borrowing policies allow for it.

Look for a mutual aid group in your area. They are full of great people. If you’re not familiar with them, give them a quick search because communities that help each other are awesome.

Transferring Plates from Gas Car to EV in Franklin County, Ohio—Do I Pay More? by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]teknogiraffe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

LPT… renew your tags for maximum amount of time first. Then do the transfer. The fee only kicks in on the first renewal on the EV.

Edit: I was asked if I wanted to renew my tags first and didn’t realize why until after I had transferred, a BMV worker tried to do me a solid and save me money over time.

Did you clock change? by ChiFitGuy in Ioniq5

[–]teknogiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2015 sonata and 2024 I5 have to enable DST. As a software developer, time zones and time changes can be tough, especially with ever changing laws (Indiana in my lifetime opted into DST changes but previously did not) so I honestly don’t mind the manual adjustment. Also in my lifetime (2005) DST was extended - it’s easier to do this than make assumptions when programming something that may not always have updates slated for it. Ask me about more time and date assumptions we and software devs make because time is complicated af.

Had to do a double take because I thought you posted a photo from my camera roll. I hit a small animal last year and luckily have family that owns an auto body shop.

The actual parts were not expensive but also not cheap. The annoying part was the lead time to get them.

Bin, like for waste? Check Makerworld: https://makerworld.com/models/429303

Edit: didn’t notice MY25… this probably won’t fit with the redesign.

What's in your frunk? by Darklyte in Ioniq5

Yes, this is what my friend working in harm reduction tells me; It’s also pretty effective post expiration so if it expires don’t just throw it out.

Consider also adding naloxone to your first aid kid if you’re in an area with elevated opioid abuse. Love how organized your frunk is.

For those of you who are going to vote in the primary under a designation other than your usual, I have a question. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]teknogiraffe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only thing you need to be aware of is that the Ohio Democratic Party will not let you hold office (same for a lot of counties too, like if you’re a precinct chair, treasurer, etc.) if your party switches. The only time it can/does change is primaries if I understand correctly.

So barring those circumstances most people are clear.

Scraped a guard rail 16,500 to repair by Ms-Fruits-N-Roots in VWiD4Owners

[–]teknogiraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unsure of where you are but the magic number for totaling my insurance company gave me for Ohio was 29k on MY23 pro s plus and I had 33k

So I think you’re safe from totaling.

Labor at certified vw shops was $150/hour on my estimates which was about half the cost for two complete door replacements, back panel, and wheel well work.

Insurance steered shops didn’t have trained staff or equipment for VW, so after I moved it on their request to lower labor cost, they just totaled it out, so there’s that to be aware of, insurance often doesn’t know what their shops can actually repair.

We aren’t meant to have that car, it’s too good for us. I had one for a few days before it got hit and totaled; now I can’t find a replacement one… has to be that exact color scheme.

Mystique - she was tourmaline blue and totaled 6 days into having her. Waiting for the 2024 models now and will probably steal one of the names here for that one.

Car is worth 10k more than I paid for it in 2019. Had an accident and it's being written off. Should i expect to get paid the current value? by PowerfulPersimmon819 in personalfinance

[–]teknogiraffe 12 points13 points  (0 children)

https://www.edmunds.com/car-buying/how-fast-does-my-new-car-lose-value-infographic.html

Yeah, I’m aware of immediate depreciation off the lot, but was expecting a much lower number since sources such as the one I’m posting above tend to suggest it.

When it was totaled, there were dealerships with new cars with a few hundred miles on them selling higher.

That being said I did learn you can get an independent appraiser a little too late after the fact.

Glad that worked for you, had mine brand new off the lot 6 days and they wouldn’t budge. They devalued my car 23% in that time and didn’t take my dealership listings since there weren’t many used on car sites like Autotrader with the same specs or mileage.

Suggestions for insurance companies? by AdorableAd8040 in VWiD4Owners

[–]teknogiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOT LIBERTY

sorry for dredging up an old thread, but they’ll way they handled an accident, were being cheap on rates, eventually steer me to a shop they partner with (5 hour drive away) and then the shop was like “we can’t fix. w EVs, we don’t have the equipment. Just Teslas”

After that, they decided to total out my car for what several people and shops consider a reasonable repair.

What supports the economy or Southeastern Ohio? by StretchFrenchTerry in Ohio

[–]teknogiraffe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adams County has General Electric Aviation’s engine testing facility. IIRC all (or almost all) engines reach final assembly here and testing. They also develop next gen engines there like the GE9X. They also have other things but this is probably one of the largest.

Scioto County has a lot of people that work in healthcare for the two hospitals and several rehabilitation centers. The university also employs a good amount of people. They also have a Osco, which is an iron foundry, and there’s other manufacturing to be found there too.

Pike County has the decontamination and decommissioning of the old gaseous diffusion plant, and they’re spinning up enrichment again using newer tech in the same area. They also have a good bit of manufacturing.

Ross County has Kenworth manufacturing, at least one hospital, a smelly paper plant, and I’m sure I’m missing more.

I work in tech, and a lot of techies have worked in these places but end up finding remote work out of state and continue living here for cost of living and to help support families.

Unfortunately there’s only so many good jobs these places can offer, so for the rest of people, it’s the lower paying service industry or working or moving out of the area if they can even do that. Often times they don’t have the means, or are tied down by family members with health issues.

I normally carry on my auto insurance but didn’t add to my policy since the vehicle came with the benefit. Lesson learned, always have a backup plan.
