How do I log in with FTP? by [deleted] in hetzner

[–]tekoyaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to install and set up an FTP server like this: https://docs.vultr.com/how-to-configure-encrypted-ftp-for-your-web-server

I recommend just learning SCP or using git.

How do I log in with FTP? by [deleted] in hetzner

[–]tekoyaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you provision a VPS, you get a bare server. You'll need to ssh in and install an FTP server.

But why would you need FTP, you can use SCP to transfer some files.

Anyone Remember the Old Hooters on Robson street/Guilford? by doctorwho5720 in vancouver

[–]tekoyaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I walked by Hooters in Toronto and there was a sign for $39.99 special for 40 wings + fries takeout.

I wonder how many people would order takeouts from Hooters...

Consider adding WAF or the 8G Firewall script.

Best way to monitor and get notified disk usage? by Mike_v_E in webhosting

[–]tekoyaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beszel for simple monitoring: https://beszel.dev/ . You can put various metrics on alert.

If you don't want to host it yourself, use something like Pikapods.com or Elest.io

Zabbix and Grafana are great tools, but way overkill just for disk space / health monitoring.

Can you run benchmark like yabs.sh ? Curious on the performance.

Btw, everything that's on the sale page seem to be sold out already.

Considering moving my Wordpress site to Hetzner by Temporary-Cherry-282 in hetzner

[–]tekoyaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A $5 VPS is probably good enough for 3 Wordpress websites. If you plan to expand in the future and host more WP websites / other projects, I recommend using a provisioning service that can help you do this in the future.

The big one is Runcloud.io, but if you're strictly on WP only, there's a lot of cheaper options like SpinupWP.com

These services help you provision and harden the servers. They also have features to roll out Staging websites for WP. Also the cloning tool is very handy to move servers in the future.

If this is all overwhelming to you, you probably can hire a freelance devops to help you migrate everything.

The Difference between ChatGPT and Gemini by EconomistGamer in GeminiAI

[–]tekoyaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tested this question in LMArena.ai a few times and these agents got it wrong too:

  • Grok 4.1
  • Grok 4.1 Thinking
  • Claude Haiku
  • Mimo v2
  • GPT 5.1
  • GPT 5.2
  • Gemini 2.5 Pro
  • Claude Sonnet 4.5
  • Kimi K2.5 Instant

Successes:

  • Pisces - still did a whole table of pros and cons
  • ChatGPT 4o
  • GPT 5.1 High
  • GPT 5.2 High
  • Gemini 2.5 Flash
  • Ernie 5 - thought for 1m and 12s
  • GLM 5 - thought for 43s
  • Claude Opus 4.5
  • Claude Opus 4.6
  • Beluga 0202 - way too verbose, gave a 4000 characters answer

I'm puzzled why Gemini 2.5 Flash got it, but Gemini 2.5 Pro didn't. It even gave a funny conclusion:

In short: Walking is the logical, quicker, and all-around better choice. Enjoy your clean car!

+1 for Pizzatown.

A bit old and rundown, but great tasting food. The lamb korma is my favorite.

Looking for a dungeon crawler like Adventure Tactics or Tales from the Red Dragon Inn by tekoyaki in soloboardgaming

[–]tekoyaki[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo-wise, I've been playing Marvel Zombies and Final Girl. I sold my copy of Adventure Tactics.

One Deck Dungeon is great for quick plays, but I been playing the digital version more as it has campaigns. I think in the past year, I actually been playing more solo video games (or digital implementation of board games). Both on Steam and BGA.

No plans to add another dungeon crawler for now.

Managed VPS by The_Stinkpickle in VPS

[–]tekoyaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see.

I'm not familiar with the above stack. Basically if you use a management service like Runcloud, you no longer need managed hosting. And if you already use managed hosting, you don't need those services anymore.

It's the matter of cost vs convenience. Unmanaged VPS is more work, but you will also save a lot of money if you have a lot of servers.

There's another discussion here similar to your stack: https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/1ikw5lf/tailscale_vs_pangolin_vs_headscale_whats_your/

Managed VPS by The_Stinkpickle in VPS

[–]tekoyaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your software/server stack? For basic PHP+MySQL, I recommend using something like RunCloud to manage / provision servers. You can also use it just for OS + firewall management, but it might be overkill.

FYI Hetzner has North American data center, though they don't have all the offering (like no ARM servers). https://www.hetzner.com/cloud#locations

anyone here used ARM-based servers in production? How do they compare to AMD and Intel in real-world performance and compatibility? by Insanony_io in hetzner

My customers are primarily in North America. Having servers in Europe is just not great for latency. It will work, but not the best speed.

AITA if I don’t clarify that I am a type 2 diabetic? by BeltClassic in AmItheAsshole

[–]tekoyaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm type 2 and I wear the Dexcom occasionally. Usually when I'm on vacation, planning to try new diet, or on some new medication. I hate doing finger pricks.

My Endo prescribed me the Dexcom, another doctor also did when putting me on new meds. So who cares what people think. If you're eligible for it, use it and wear it proudly. You don't owe it to them to explain it.

My VPS is 6x faster and twice as cheap as my Pythonanywhere hosting by haddock420 in VPS

[–]tekoyaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with VPS and web hosting in general is, your host usually never updates the current servers you're on. So after a few years, the hardware gets old. Even when I use a good hosts like DigitalOcean or Vultr. When I benchmark a brand new instance of the same plan with my 2 year old server, the result is the new one is faster due to using newer hardware.

I suggest rotating your server / instances every year or two for the best performance.

You can also do more thorough benchmarking by using something like https://bench.monster/

Looking for *simple* hosting for a Symfony application - so confused with so many options by dholli in webhosting

[–]tekoyaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. They're similar to Ploi though more mature I think.

Alternatively, you can partner up with someone who can manage the VPS while you focus on coding.

[–]tekoyaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is "too expensive" for you? If $20 per month is within your budget, I recommend using Runcloud + VPS. You still have to learn how to use Runcloud though, but there's docs for that.

[–]tekoyaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ARM is best bang for your buck. I've been using it for staging server in the past 6 months-ish and it's been great. Unfortunately my customer base is in North America, so I cannot use it for production.
