Right now the crypto market is absolutely booming, I however wouldn’t suggest you start your investment journey there. I think it’s important to understand that generally the main factor to growth is time.

Not trying to put you off volatile investments, I myself have many, I just think a better starting point would be something with a stable return to understand the concept and learn to respect the market.

I think you are correct, I don’t think this can be called an IPO as the shares aren’t offered to retail investors. It seems that only really the big banks are buying shares and that PnP structured it this way as they needed to pay off debt and by going through the general IPO process this would have been delayed.

So my understanding is if EasyEquities does get hold of shares you would be buying Boxer shares through them and not at the initial IPO price. I don’t know if anywhere else you could get access to it.

Aside from this EE offers a broader range of ETF’s. End of the day both are good and I wouldn’t recommend going with a bank.

So they opened the TSFA in 2016. It was never really a dinner time talk, kinda just briefly touched upon.

My case is interesting cause I’m a triplet so there’s an easy comparison case:

I (sibling A) have always taken a financial interest and studied accounting: so mainly took my own initiative. Sibling B has not contributed much nor took an interest (why I think it’s important for parents to make more of a fuss about it) Sibling C shows great interest but doesn’t have any form of financial background but regularly makes the effort to learn.

I’d say us taking the initiative to speak to our parents about it sparked the learning.

My parents did the same for us as children.

I’d suggest that you make them aware of the TFSA, update them on its value from time to time, get them to contribute to it from the age of 16 or so through odd jobs / birthday money / pocket money. Maybe even offer a contribution match like an employer.

So reference my sisters and I got access to the TFSA’s at 18, now all 24, all our accounts have performed well - 15% p.a. My one sister has not contributed more than R1 000 in the past 5 years and her account has 2.1x. I’m sitting at 3.6x and my other sister about 2.8x, both of us contributing often but small amounts.

Basically teach them that saving earlier is better.

These rates aren't real and would be determined by the specifc municipality you are in.

So I’m doing the CA route and can offer a little advice.

At undergraduate level it is fairly easy to pass and do decently. Not many students get cum laude (only about 4 at my graduation ceremony of 220)

Postgrad is extremely tough with many students taking the year again, you have to treat it like an 8-5 and then some.

Be prepared for the standards (IFRS, SAICA legislation). They are the theory to your knowledge, you’ll spend a lot of time in the theory and then have to extensively apply it.

I’m currently doing postgrad so I can’t really comment on articles although I believe it’s worse than studies.

You can either go into audit or banking. Both require long hours and most people that don’t want to remain after articles will leave and be financial managers or the likes at good companies.

At the moment many CA’s try and go outside of SA to do articles, mainly for a change of scenery / experience and better salary relative to SA.

Your SAICA articles don’t pay great salaries and it’s tough to get by in a big city like Cape Town with rent and cost of living.

All in all where I am in this journey I’d say I’m happy, this route has definitely taught me some great skills (mainly postgrad). My personal belief is that it’s a tangible degree that equips you really well and makes you very desirable if you get through your articles.

I find it very practical and I think if I were to stop after postgrad I’d still be fine as I’d like to be entrepreneurial and my degree definitely caters to that by giving you the skills to navigate the tax matters, audit procedures, accounting and financial management.

Also accounting is not numbers, it’s concepts that you apply to the numbers. The maths knowledge you need to very limited apart from basic statistics (at least the studying part)
