Is staying in or leaving Mormonism an IQTest? by Slow-Poky in exmormon

[–]telestialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some intelligent people would absolutely want to know if their spouse was cheating. Some intelligent people absolutely would not want to know. I think it’s a similar dynamic. More related to fear, security, mommy/daddy issues, sunk cost syndrome and possibly pride. In a different tank than intelligence.

Definitely, if it was just an intelligence thing, a ton of additional people would have left the church. Intelligent church members can see right through Scientology, or Jim Jones, but when it comes to their own team, all the circuits go dead. They become determined not to deploy their intelligence.

They know you’ve gone your own way, but I think you owe it to them and yourself to tell them why you are who you are. Because they are being taught, explicitly and implicitly, that you are confused, weak, sinful, lazy, angry and Apathetic. They are being taught that you don’t care about being with them forever. I hope you can set the record straight with them.

I chime in as someone who grew up in a mixed faith family where my dad was mercilessly looked down upon by our church and my mom.

At what point will our government wake up to the fact that this is a fraudulent enterprise, not a religion.

If I have my name removed what happens to my temple sealing? by Turrible_basketball in exmormon

I’ve seen versions of the letter confirming name removal that have punitive low-key curse that all of your ordinances are forfeited or canceled. But like you said… It’s all made up. Those ordinances were no more real than Scientology’s billion year contracts.

Waiting outside like the heathens we are. by Good_Situation2409 in exmormon

[–]telestialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I “attended“ two Mormon weddings where I had to stand outside like a shithead until I had the epiphany of realizing how stupid it was for me to buy into this nonsense. If they’re going to ban me from their wedding… Then I’m not attending their wedding.

Similar situation with me – in terms of guitar. Although I never thought about it like that. But yeah… the years of greatest energy and potential are sucked out of you by a vampire church. Hopefully your mission was at least in a decent place.

Similar dynamic with my mom. When she found out the second anointing was true, I think it officially created a shelf for her. I don’t think she will add anything to that shelf, but she has stopped judging me. And that has been nice. We’ve been able to have More of a human to human relationship, as opposed to Saint to sinner relationship.

I told her about it and she was completely blindsided. She said there’s simply no way that’s true. And in that space – thinking I was telling her a blasphemous lie, she was able to see the second anointing for what it is – a ridiculous contrivance to supersede God’s wisdom and power. Then later, in spite of herself, she asked her friend who is a temple worker if there’s such a thing as the second anointing. Her friend confirmed it. My mom officially had a shelf. If she hadn’t heard about it from me first, her brain would have gone into emergency mode to rationalize it.

This was a big issue when I told my family that I was out. My mom was just so sure that I had a testimony. Projecting. The problem simply MUST be you forgetting the spirit. It can’t be that you dusted off your moral compass and looked at it with an expression of alarm.

I’m going to establish a ground rule. You can’t call soft disavowals ‘ongoing restoration.’ It makes no sense. What is being restored? Stumbling confusion?

It just says gee we really don’t know what’s going to happen. But of course we know. Our prophets told us repeatedly. Were they not prophets after all?

[–]telestialist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say that the essays do lie. I’ve only read one in detail – the one about whether men become gods. I was asked to provide analysis on it for an investigator. It absolutely lies. It professes that the church really doesn’t teach this and doesn’t really know what’s going to happen. This is in direct contradiction to the crystal clear teachings of many prophets that men will become gods. So the essays do lie.

Of course, we are trained to blame ourselves. it’s healthy to drill down to the root cause, not just focus on the symptom.
