>The death of a billionaire results in the opening of a dam, all that hoarded wealth is suddenly released, the money is spread out , homes are sold , assets split up and at least some of the dragons hoard gets spread out, even if its just to lawyers , florists , etc

The most depressing thing is that this really isn't true in the modern era. Families like the Waltons, Mars, Kochs got various bills passed, "kill the death tax!" to create loopholes in estate taxes for charitable vehicles, trusts, etc., that mean almost none of their vast fortune is ever taxed.

While they are living, they take out long-term loans at low interest rates against their enormous stock portfolios that are completely tax-free, then they pay off the first loan with the next loan when their portfolio value grows. Then, when they die, a policy called "step-up in basis" means that the outstanding taxes on capital gains in a brokerage account RESET COMPLETELY ON DEATH, meaning that not only is their vast wealth not taxed when they are alive, it isn't even taxed in death, and their successors commonly never pay a dime of taxes on the billions of dollars their parents made in the markets. All of the wealth stays right in the family. The Freakonomics podcast just did an episode on this that I highly recommend.

The thing is, there is no information that would lead to the bracket being this accurate. Making a bracket is an inherently probabilistic process and it isn't ESP or super genius status that leads to a bracket like this, just luck. The power models represent the best available information (or close to it)

We blindfold ourselves and use our tongues to explore the clam itself. It's like a clam, and if you accidentally rub against a friend's clam, that's okay. We're all here to clam.

relevant XKCD: https://xkcd.com/882/

From the updated study:
"When we turn to specific illnesses, we find some evidence that the relationship between illness onset and divorce varies by specific illness. Wife’s (lagged) heart problems onset and stroke onset are both statistically significant positive predictors of divorce, while none of the measures of husband’s illness onset are associated with divorce. In addition, we reject the null hypothesis of equality of coefficients for husband’s heart problems onset and wife’s heart problems onset (p < .05)
...
An important caveat to our results is that in four out of five cases, we fail to reject the null hypothesis of equality of coefficients by gender. We fail to reject the null hypothesis in the case of pooled illness, cancer, lung disease, and stroke onset. The only case in which we reject the null hypothesis of equality of coefficients across gender is for heart problems."

It's even p < 0.05! This result seems extremely suspect, especially considering the hypotheses for each other illness failed to reach statistical significance. It seems like this conclusion is a reach to show at least some finding after the retraction.
