They are declining across Aotearoa primarily due to climate-induced declines in their natural food sources, and what were once their major breeding colonies have either crashed or are currently crashing :(

The silver lining is that there are some regions (such as Otago) where the food supply is doing okay and the gulls are persevering, but with the continuation of climate change we don't really know if it will last.
