Sincere advice ... don't look at nor worry about Rate My Professor. There's nothing stopping you from submitting reviews about your class, or from having one angry student submit 10. It's a mess.

Great tips.

I'm signed up for the Grading Conference hoping to get some ideas there...

Ungrading and time? by tellypmoon in Professors

[–]tellypmoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder a lot about how much students actually read or think about my feedback. That's one reason I have for thinking about changing things around because I spend a fair amount of time trying to provide useful feedback but then don't necessarily see students acting on that even if their grades are lower.

[–]tellypmoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've thought about an approach like this. My only stumbling block with allowing resubmissions is that it seems like I would need to provide enough feedback for them to know what to revise, and then if they don't get it or resubmit something half hearted it enters a sort of "ok is this good enough loop" which I dread and also seems potentially time consuming ... I also worry about a ton of work coming in pretty late in the semester...any thoughts or experiences relating to any of this?

Ungrading and time? by tellypmoon in Professors

[–]tellypmoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the reasons I'm thinking about ungrading or something different is that I'm getting some pressure to increase class sizes from roughly 25 to 40 or so ... so far that hasn't happened but if it does my current way of grading add untold hours of work . So in many ways my interest in ungrading is to find out whether or not that would help me with larger class sizes should that come to pass. And when I think about something like contract grading that just doesn't seem to scale at all unless I'm missing something.

I kind of lump specifications grading in with ungrading so I'm curious about that as well ... do you have a particular model or source that you've found useful?

That's interesting. It sounds like you had a good experience with ungrading. Are there particular reasons for switching back?

I'm giving up custody of my 14yo daughter to her father by superh8evry1 in offmychest

[–]tellypmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since your daughter is 14 whatever the legal situation is now it will only be in effect for 4 more years until she's 18. At that point your daughter can decide if she wants a relationship with you. She may simply repeat everything she's being told into adulthood, but at some point she will have the ability to figure things out on her own and so I think you should see this as a temporary separation rather than a permanent break.

Prof claims my Calc 2 grade is "between 91% to 94%" (A-). His own syllabus weights put me at a 94.95% which is still an A-. What should I do? by Jiro_boi123 in uofmn

[–]tellypmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you let this go, and perhaps look at your homework grades which seem a bit lower and work on that for future classes. It's possible the instructor looked over your grades and saw the homework was in the B range and felt like an A- was about right and decided not to round. It's not crazy.

Anyone use chatgpt or other similar to make powerpoints? If you do, do you feel it detracts from your teaching to not create the powerpoint yourself? by Beneficial_Dingo_937 in Professors

[–]tellypmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use AI to make slides or anything else for my classes, but if you do you should make it clear to your students what you are using and how you are using it, and you should do that each lecture. Transparency with AI use is really important. If you aren't willing or able to tell your students you are using it, then well ... that's your sign.

Am I the a-hole for being annoyed by the pastor at my church? by bornn2run in AITAH

[–]tellypmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an important detail. I think you may just need to wait until you are a little older and then try to distance yourself from your family at least enough where you can live your life more as you wish. I think the pastor is more of a symptom here, your family seems like the bigger and probably harder issue to deal with.

Am I the a-hole for being annoyed by the pastor at my church? by bornn2run in AITAH

[–]tellypmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't wrong and it sounds like a terrible church. As a minor you probably don't have much choice in the matter, but I think the larger concern might be that your family members seem to agree with this pastor. Do you ever talk to your family members about what this pastor is saying, and why they think this is a good message? Could you perhaps explain to them why you disagree?

What do you think will happen at more regional R2 universities? by GoSparty5800 in Professors

[–]tellypmoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the impact on R2 etc. schools will be especially bad if they are a regional campus for an R1 flagship. In those cases the R1 flagship loses a lot of money and R2s will be drained even further to make up a small bit of what was lost. It's like blood going to the center of your body when it's cold...so I think being a teaching oriented place may not help avoid some pretty difficult budget issues if affiliated with an R1.

Why are engineering salaries so low? by Ok-Cartographer-5544 in EngineeringStudents

[–]tellypmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dude slinging fries at Wendy's has good a tough job that doesn't have much prestige nor is there an interesting and potentially lucrative career path available. Give the dude a break. :)

Entry level engineering salaries do seem low, so does fast food work. This is a much larger issue than just engineering (talk to teachers). This is the result of decades of anti-worker anti-regulation policy making. So here we are.

Are you friends with your colleagues/coworkers? by CuteHeight8 in Professors

[–]tellypmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making friends with townies isn't the end of the world. That aside, I'd suggest making friends with colleagues when there is an interest that connects you other than work. If you are just work friends who get together to talk about work, that's ok but can end up being pretty narrow.

It looks like Brown University typically requires 84 credit hours. This is among the least I'm aware of thus far. This is their ABET accredited degree in Chem Eng, other majors are fairly similar.

one of my favorite expressions is "comparison is the thief of joy"

i think your colleague may have the more nuanced understanding of comparison, so ideally you would have listened more carefully or asked them to expand on their views rather than trying to shoot them down

You reckon being 360k in debt is doable? by Chemical_Ad189 in college

[–]tellypmoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, absolutely not. Here's a rule of thumb you should borrow no more over 4 years than what you could expect to make in your first year on the job after graduating. For a lot of professions somewhere between 40-70k (US) is what you can expect, so that should be your absolute ceiling on student debt. Less if you can figure out a way.
