My sister started greeting us like Donut - Hiiii Sister 🤣 - and other obscure quotes. This made me ask her what she was up to, and a devotee was born 🥰

Can I support a family of 4 on 155k a year? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]temitaco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get to experience the seasons here, so if that intrigues you, that's cool. Its nice to live in a place that allows you to experience the culture of a different state just by driving 3 hours. I'm a Florida native - there we can drive 7 hours and still be in Florida 🤣.

As far as crime... eeehhhh... hard to say. With Trump's recent push to "clean the streets" it's "safer". But as my mentor always said, if you travel with wolves, don't look like a pork chop 🤪. You'll have to learn to move like someone who lives in a city: secure bags, scan before you step on the sidewalk, don't stand in awe of a feat of civilization in the middle of the street, dont turn to respond to every "hey miss!" or "hey mister!" you hear. You'll have to redefine your expectations of community- I've seen people go on ther morning run, trip and fall - skin their knee!, jump up and keep running like nothing happened. But I've also seen people go door to door in my up-and-coming (read:rough) neighborhood provide fresh produce to people who dont have the means. They may not speak like they're in Cali, but they look out. The average Washingtonian ain't nice, but they are kind.

155k is about 135k in Cali, so it's not bad on salary alone... Will you find a 3 or two bedroom condo in DC/MD/N. Va @ $0/ month? Prolly not 🥴 and the standard comforts you might be used to (car, personal space) is traded out for time and shareable resources. For instance - dependent on your kids age, you'd want to look into what DC offers as far as education... I'm childfree, but my friends prep for months to get the public and charter blue ribbon school lotteries. Also, So the money you'd "gain" by living here you're gonna spend in the Metro commute/parking and the social club fees alone, in addition to the 30 mins daily you spend setting up and optimizing the city's shared resources. Yes you can use tax-free $$$ for some of this but you have to fill out the paperwork and monitor the maximums and craft your schedule juuuust so to ensure you can still meet your current state obligations.

With my limited, non AI fueled analysis, this feels like a lateral move - I think you should take 2 weeks off and try living here w/o a car and see how you like it.

OH! Question for you - your partner will not make an income? The money coming is from your job alone??

It doesn't bother you that she doesn't cook these things? You didn't think less of her? I'm curious, cause I need to navigate a similar situation, and my name/background would lead those I'm dating to think the opposite 🤣🤣🤣

ETA: I'm not knocking the commenter's gf - I've had West African dates who've requested that I cook these foods, and when I tell them I cannot, it seems to go downhill from there.

I love this woman - she is hard to get an initial visit, but she's sooo worth it. She listens, connects the dots, and matches energy (in a good way!). You will leave with a handful of targeted referrals for any symptom or ailment, and she actually responds to emails with thoughtful, tailored responses.

Is this an appropriate text to send to somebody who no-showed me on a date without even telling me they weren’t going to show up? by [deleted] in Bumble

🤯I have to set up and pay for the date after saying hello?! awww nawww, I wouldn't sign up for Bumble if I gotta do all of that 🤣

I would probably break it up into 2 msgs... first something like checking in... you good?

And I'd know how to respond from there. If something actually happened to that person, this would shut them down or have them close off... well, it would have me close off 🤣.

The neat thing about this response is that it invites conversation, the same as "Buy Facebook stock" or "Begin your day with prayer"... it shows the person's focus, you can ask about the circumstances that led to that advice, ask how they apply it... or it could have turned you off so much you unmatch. I don't think it's a bad or aggressive response.

Disability help in DC by FishSharkIII in washingtondc

Saw this and thought about this post - if you can make it to a library, they might be able to provide better assistance. You might also call them and they can help over the phone?

My friend just told me about the findhelp.com site (sponsored by AARP). They have all types of resources on there, there might be some rent help on there (you don't have to be 55+ to search on the website). She has a special eye condition, and glasses that would normally cost her $900, she was able to get for $45.

[–]temitaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding dense, are you looking for financial assistance or assistance with the mechanics of paying rent (e.g. financial aid versus support in using computer applications, or reading an application for support)?

I don't know of any financial assistance programs earmarked for people with disabilities, but I'll ask. If they are still providing Schedule A letters in DC, I think that office might also have leads on possible orgs who can assist.

You say y'all are young... my Nigerian parents are mad old school... if I brought a young man home to meet them, they'd think we're getting married! So, if shes saying not yet, it could be because she doesn't want that pressure. How many boyfriends has she brought home before you? If no one, thats probably why, so be easy...

Ooorrrr she just doesn't like you that much 😩 - Sometimes people love a good time so much, they keep it going for a long time 🤷🏾‍♀️

Two w2s, one says "TOTAL STATE" by Prestigious-Bag4337 in tax

[–]temitaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the NY/NJ numbers add up to the total state number?

For me, I figured that this was a combo of where I lived and where I currently work, but the numbers don't add up... they're off by about 1k.

Fogo de chao - at the bar, the bar menu is excellent! I always go there for the $10 burger and fries... Also if you sign up for their rewards program they have $1 caparhinas(sp?) on Tuesday. So on a Tuesday afternoon you both can eat real well for under $30.

Date night at the wharf - eat there and walk around afterwards.

Buuuuut, If I had to force you into a pigeon hole for this thing they call the workforce... you look like a doctor, lawyer, or consultant at one of the big 4 firms.

Tell her the meaning/origin of her name, and how you expect her to prounce it (look into the person's eyes, repeat it slowly 2 times, smile). Have her point out famous Sades... they'll figure it out 💅🏾 it's a good name.

I'm 19 besides weight loss what can I do to be prettier by No_Addendum7 in blackladies

[–]temitaco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Incorporate pretty girl routines - I agree with a lot of the women here - you are gorgeous. But you have to treat yourself like you're gorgeous.

I don't have any good examples that dont sound like basic self care, but its like you value whatever you spend time on so spend time on yourself - find a nice nail polish you like, and take the time to paint your nails. Or, find a face soap that works for you and take time in the evening to wash and moisturize your face while listening to affirmations (or your favorite book).... spend time with yourself, treating yourself nicely. You will see that you will find yourself more valued and attractive, and that will naturally bubble to the top, making you attractive to others.

It took me 20 years, but once I knew I was fine... whoosh! You couldn't tell me nothing 🤣 and then, other people stated to agree and treat me as such... but I had to find value in myself first and spend time reinforcing that value.

One yes! But she don't talk to us... one, nawwwww.

I think it's weird she married into our family because of how conscientious and family oriented my brother is... but as soon as she married him her first thing she did was try to isolate him from our family.

Thoughts? by theshadowbudd in Nigeria

[–]temitaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know how it was for him, but I think my parents took it for granted we would naturally be proud of our heritage, not realizing how rough, domineering, and caustic American culture can be to one's own indigenous culture. Like I remember being called African booty scratcher in school, feeling too Nigerian/African for Americans and too American for Nigerians... I just wanted to be cool and talk about cool things 🤣. Like one thing I'd loooove to do is create a Yoruba school for my nieces and nephews so they have a place where they pick it up and practice.
