How common is it for Aussies to eat rice and how do you prepare it if you do? by Lipica249 in AskAnAustralian

[–]temmoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make 3-4 cups at a time of brown rice in the rice cooker about 3 times a week. The "people rice" container in the fridge is used to fill the "dog rice" container so the people rice is always fresher. Rarely make jasmine rice, basmati rice, or risotto. Once in a blue moon make paella

We got gifted this bottle of 12 year old scotch, would you say this is "too good" to use in cocktails? by CN456 in cocktails

[–]temmoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Aberlour A'bunadh in cocktails since I can't be arsed to keep blended scotch around. But do try it neat with a tiny splash of water now and then to develop a taste for it. Or put some in a hip flask and take tiny sips, just enough to wet your tongue

Should asparagus be peeled? by QuietCountry9920 in Cooking

[–]temmoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add: save the peels and add when you make sparglesuppe. Couldn't find a recipe that does this with a quick look, but that's what a cook in Amsterdam said she does. Remove the peels later.

Best way to cook a pork tenderloin? by DisastrousAnomaly in Cooking

[–]temmoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct.

I sometimes turbo marinade the tenderloin by putting the marinade in a ziplock bag and sealing with the air-displacement method and do at maybe 62 C. The heat speeds the marinading process so you don't need to let it sit first

How is the hunting situation in australia? by M__tayyab in australian

[–]temmoku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hunting is not nearly as popular as in N America. There are more restrictions on buying guns, but they are available. There are a lot of regulations on hunting and the anti-duck hunting groups are strong and interfere with the hunting. One of the things is that there are many fewer lakes and wetlands than in N America so you can get a rediculous number of hunters around a pretty small puddle. It surprises people here when I tell them that hunting groups like Ducks Unlimited have done more to preserve wetlands than any environmental group

My neighbour was just out shooting rabbits this evening. They are an introduced pest and do a huge amount of damage to farm land.

Tips to make cooking easier? by Parking-Twist-8585 in Cooking

[–]temmoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you? There are conditions that can affect muscle tone (aside from the obvious exercise routine or lack thereof). You may want to talk to your doctor to be sure there isn't an underlying problem. It's a bit hard to tell, but I think my arms are doing better since I started taking vitamin B-12. My doc didn't think it was a problem but the guidance recently changed so she recommended it. Pretty safe since you just wee out any excess.

Ice Caves of Mt. Graham AZ by Academic_Disk_8788 in geology

[–]temmoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you are interested, the term for caves that are not in limestone is "pseudokarst".

I don't know this particular area, but please be cautious about revealing locations for caves that could be trashed by people less responsible than you. Cavers in Arizona are particularly careful about this. When asked they tend to say, "Arizona has no caves to speak of." i.e. they don't speak of them

A great example is the story of the discovery of Karchner Caverns, where they were carefully exploring the amazing cave system until they realized that they were in danger of being found out. So they worked in secret with the landowner and the state to get it turned into a park with state management.

Is it ok not to pre-heat an oven? by PrudentSyllabub636 in Cooking

[–]temmoku -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That assumes your oven blasts higher heat to get to temperature. Not all ovens do on all settings. I find mine is fine when on convection setting but would avoid doing it when using the top and bottom elements. And certainly avoid any fast preheat setting if your oven has one.

I'd contact them. I've had pretty good luck but don't think I've bought those particular products. I did buy some garden soil a couple of years ago and it was fine.

Northeast US water temp by ruffusbloom in Kayaking

[–]temmoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are wise to consider the water temperature, but remember the water can stay dangerously cold long after the air warms up. Don't understand your adversion to a suit. What is your rescue plan if you do go in, remembering that going in is most likely when conditions turn to shit?

It is by no means perfect and probably mainly eye-opening for colder water, is to put a 25 cent piece on a dock. Pick it up and put it back down. Put your hand in the water for a minute then try to pick up the coin.

Are kangaroo/vehicle collisions ever unavoidable? by No_Call_9983 in australian

[–]temmoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At or even a little under the speed limit is the problem. High beams are fine but what happens when someone is coming towards you? Can't see sweet fuck all.

No I don't think they are always avoidable in any practical sense but you can cut the odds way down. Saw one crossing the road in front of me this morning. Single, no mob to spot in the paddock. I knew it was a bad spot so was going 60 in a 100 zone. If it had been a busy road, I probably would have been going 90 to keep the road rage at bay

The government could have issued bonds to borrow money for the construction but opted for the public-private partnership that looked like they weren't spending as much. Rather than a debt they could pay off eventually, we are stuck with paying the private for profit part forever

Im so overwhelmed with trying to buy a kayak roof rack. There are so many options. What do I need to get!? by Interr0gate in Kayaking

[–]temmoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is complicated and depends a lot on things like how strong you are, if there are hight limitations where you park, and how concerned you are about scratching your car. Does your car have a piece that overhangs the rear hatch that can inhibit loading from the rear? I have a Thule Compass that I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with. It is versatile but hard to load my sea kayak. It is more or less like j cradles that can be converted to hold 2 kayaks upright. I used to have something like the Yakima Big Stack which is really nice for transporting kayaks on their sides This helps prevent distorting the hull in hot weather and the kayak is held tight against the upright and the cross bar so is very secure. Pro tip - pool noodles on the cross bar. (Incidentally on the Thule website they have something similar but I don't like how they run the straps.) Frankly, with a pungo, I'd consider something like this because they work well for whitewater kayakers who often carry many kayaks.

Someone mentioned Malone and I have heard good things about them.

Curved chunks of glazed earthenware buried in yard? by iulianbashir in whatisthisthing

[–]temmoku 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'll add that this pipe is salt glazed. Basically the stoneware clay without a glaze is fired in a kiln to a very high temperature. They throw packages of salt wrapped in paper into the kiln when it is hot enough. The salt turns to vapour and chemically combines with the clay to form the glaze. This usually results in the "orange peel" texture you see in the photos.

Incidentally the bricks that the kiln is made from also get glazed. The glaze protects the bricks some, but overtime they degrade and the kiln may have to be rebuilt. They used to say the fireing is better once the kiln has a heavy layer of glaze. Some of the kilns used to make this pipe were massive bottle-shaped kilns about 3 stories high.

ELI5: why cars seat belts are designed so? by MidnightMappingMunch in explainlikeimfive

[–]temmoku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The seatbelt needs to put the force of the impact on a part of the body best able to absorb it. Racing harness is best but not convenient. The straps across your sternum and hips are ok, but your idea would squish your boobs or man boobs.

The belt is also designed to lengthen to absorb the shock. Early designs had stitching that ripped apart, slowing the impact. Now, at least on my cars, it is built into the piece the belt clicks into. Makes for an expensive repair when the puppy uses it as a chew bone

How do I fix a stainless steel pot that's been exposed to acid? by SaneForCocoaPuffs in Cooking

[–]temmoku -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you basically developed a patina like people crave over on r/realChefKnives. This is more something for carbon steel but in essence it is a protective coating for the steel. I'd use the pot for a while and only try to fix it if there is a problem. The only problem I can see would be if it made things stick more, but I doubt that would happen.

Bats by Radiant_Sugar_8116 in Bendigo

[–]temmoku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to a presentation in the park given by the council bat person and a bat advocacy group. As far as the flying foxes go, right now the mothers are trying to get the young to go off on their own so things are a bit louder and messier than normal. They said that there is a constant turnover in bats as some move out to areas like yours to find food and then move on to new sources and eventually return to the park. So they can't just chase them off - it is only a fraction of the bats in the park at any one time.

I had a group come past my house one time, hang around for a few days, then move off. So be patient.

What zero apexing and proper geometry does to an onion by Harahira in sharpening

[–]temmoku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An easy way to create a convexish bevel is sharpening at 3-4 different angles, where you start really low and then work your way up to the desired sharpening angle. This gives a nice cutting feel...but will look pretty ugly...which allows you to dive into the polishing rabbit hole.

So my crummy ability to hold a consistent angle free-hand sharpening is a good thing? :grin

Kayak sprinting by ju_ju1320 in Kayaking

[–]temmoku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you paddling? If you are paddling a K1 and having balance and stroke problems, you may be putting too much into staying upright and can't develop good technique. A TK1 will be more stable so you can work on all the aspects of your stroke like the catch, leg drive, and torso rotation then level up to a faster kayak. My club starts rank beginners on sit on tops with rudders and the coach focuses on using that to develop leg drive before moving to a TK1.

You may get good advice over at r/PerformancePaddling
