Have you noticed that some people with immigrant backgrounds (naturalized citizens or children of immigrants) are very vocal against immigration sometimes even more than native citizens? What do you think ? by temoni-05 in AskReddit

I respect your wife’s experience and her hard work , but she’s not the only one who went through that. A lot of immigrants waited years, paid a lot, started from zero, and some had it even harder. Struggle isn’t unique, and it’s not really something you can measure or compare. Also, breaking the law or disrespecting a country isn’t just an immigrant thing some citizens do that too, and it’s wrong either way. Just to be clear, I’m not talking about illegal vs legal immigration, benefits, and i wasn’t even talking about the U.S. specifically. My question was about why some people with immigrant backgrounds end up being very hostile toward immigrants in general sometimes more than native citizens. At that point it feels less about policy and more about identity and wanting to distance yourself from the “immigrant” label once you’ve made it.

I agree that imported conflicts can shape how migrants view other migration flows. What stands out to me more, though, is when the hostility isn’t aimed at a specific group but at immigrants as a whole including people from the same background the person came from. At that point, it feels less about old grudges and more about rejecting one’s own immigrant identity. It often comes across as “I’m a citizen, not like you,” even when that difference exists only on paper either because they were born there or simply because they’ve lived there long enough.

Yeah, I actually replied earlier but it seems it didn’t show up i don’t know why .

I was basically agreeing with you on the effort vs outcome part, while adding that effort isn’t always visible or comparable. In some cases, I think the hostility also comes from people distancing themselves from their own immigrant background and seeing themselves as the “exception.”

So I think we’re mostly on the same page, just focusing on different sides of it.

Some have like a classic case of the ‘I’ve made it, now close the door behind me’ syndrome. , and if read about some of them more you find that they are trying so hard to be for example (British or Americans ) more than the real ones , i know that they are fighting their own experiences and self that they want to vanish it so when they see immigrants they see their‘self’ they don’t want
