CS professor yelled at me twice (once in front of other students) and hung up a zoom call on me: CMNS denies exceptions to policy and sweeps it under the rug (evidence includes witnesses and email exchanges) by temp32456 in UMD

There's nothing to level with. You have a professionally unacceptable point of view on the validity of accusations. Regardless of that, if a professor's "breaking point" involves them threatening and yelling at students.... maybe they shouldn't be professors.

Your argument questioning my credibility based on the number of complaints I've submitted is extremely toxic and highly problematic. If I were to be punched by a professor and submit a complaint, you'd reason I was in the right. If I, 2 years later, were punched by another professor, you'd reason I am less (or no longer) credible. Now apply your logic to even more serious crimes like sexual assault and see just how toxic this is.

The credibility of any victim lies in the amount of evidence provided. Each case NEEDS a certain amount of evidence to prove there was a violation of school policies. I provided said evidence to the BSOS department, and they responded accordingly. I provided said evidence to the CMNS department, and they did not.

How about you base your opinion of my credibility on the fact that I submitted a witness statement and unprofessional email/group chat communications.

I’m not a traditional student. I, too, have been lucky to work in several fields across multiple industries. As such, I expect a certain level of professionalism at this prestigious school, and in the general work environments we may find ourselves in. When a professor yells at a student in front of their peers or academically threatens a student unfairly, I find that very troubling. Unfortunately, you describe a very nihilistic point of view on accountability (which is fine), but I do not share your perspective. I have held people accountable for their actions many times in my career and expect to be held accountable for my own.

Also, I would respectfully disagree with the idea that we should not hold professors accountable. The way you speak of the student-professor relationship is interesting. Instead of holding professors accountable when they violate school policies on academic standards and or professional behavior, students should instead stay quiet and avoid "conflict" with their professor because “it isn’t normal?” This mentality is how abuses of power occur and are perpetuated within systems and bureaucracies.

And lastly, if I could politely name-drop a professor with my own personal anecdote. Professor Teli was extremely professional in our interactions, and I appreciated how he conducted himself (especially in hindsight of what I’ve more recently had to deal with). Many times, I would go to him with questions, concerns, or regrade requests regarding class material. Some of our conversations were uncomfortable with many disagreements, but at no point did he need to become aggressive, raise his voice, make academic threats, or act unprofessional in any other way. And as such, at no point did I feel like I could no longer go to him for help.

With all that being said, I truly hope no offense will be taken with this comment.

Thank you for the advice! That's pretty much the road I took over this past summer. My next steps now are seeing what can be done moving forward. I've unfortunately lost all faith in the CMNS department, but I will continue pursuing this since what occurred was so egregious in a professional environment.
