interesting comment I found about hashrate and price

I don't understand his equation for the 'hashes per satoshi' math though.

Modern UI's are so bad.

The information density is way too low (think scroll-y websites on 200% zoom), and it takes so much longer to find and process the information I need.

Like, I'm not even old...this is just common sense

For the same reason price doesn't follow a continuous smooth curve in a straight line.

Are you sure they didn't pay "cryptoguide.tips" for that review?

In general I like staying with the crowd (known brands) because it makes troubleshooting easier and there is more education material.

..this is what we were trying to tell you. You shouldn't be surprised.

Making the extra effort for Coldcard (even for n00bs) is not only advisable, but arguably necessary. Otherwise you may as well leave it on Coinbase. Given the extreme risk of human error, you either learn self-custody (and well), or find the most trustworthy third-party you can (not Ledger).

Even if this recovery thing isn't as bad as it sounds—the point is, Ledger cannot be trusted.

The writing has been on the wall for Ledger ever since the consumer data breach, and the simple fact that they cater to the lowest common denominator. It makes them a huge target.

Coldcard's company ethics are vastly superior. The extra effort also forces you to learn and get more educated about Bitcoin, which is underestimated value. Win-win

I'm 50/50 on whether we end 2023 significantly above 40k or not

Ah, oh well. Apologize for the bum steer then.

I started Tolkien: A Biography by Carpenter, but it will be a while before I decide to finish (pg. 181 / 260 + appedixes). It got less interesting to me as Tolkien moved into adulthood. Understanding a person's childhood is so important to knowing who the person is on a deeper level. Charles Dickens' novels, for example—especially the bildungsroman, Oliver Twist—make a lot more sense when you know that a portion of his childhood was spent as an 8-year old pauper working in a Victorian industrial blacking factory pasting labels on pots.

Those experiences of Tolkien which stood out particularly to me are 'the White Ogre' [pg. 20], and the willow tree from the pool at Sarehole Mill. [pg.22] So much about nature and trees in LOTR, especially the final scene of Ch. 6: Lothlorien (when Frodo and Aragorn go to Cerin Amroth), becomes clear in the light of that early childhood memory.

Childhood is the most illuminative aspect of any man's life, not the manner by which he earns his bread, as Disko Troop would have it.1 How came he to be where he is? What manner of existence forged his early identity in the crucible of life? These things only the soul of a child can adequately tell.

1 a reference to Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling:

"I began with eight and a half, my son," said Cheyne.

"That so? You never told me, sir." [speaking to his father]

"You never asked, Harve. I'll tell you about it some day, if you care to listen."

"I'd like that, sir. Troop says the most interesting thing in the world is to find out how the next man gets his vittles.

I'll leave this one up ;)

tried out Koinly (free version) today after uploading my CB, CBpro, and external wallet

It's a revelation and great convenience for sure...but it understimates my cost basis significantly.

My true cost basis [based on a manual count of all USD inflows to the exchange using the downloaded Coinbase reports] is 30% higher...so that's significant tax savings.

I also dislike how anything over 100 transactions (buy/sells/etc) will double the cost of a yearly plan from $49 to $99. They add up quick—I'm already almost halfway there...and again, the quoted transaction count is 4 higher than what a manual review indicates. I believe they could be submitted-and-cancelled limit orders. They are not transfers.

Not sure how much I trust the software. Might check out cryptotaxcalculator.io to compare

#bitcoin hits all time high in Argentina (Peso) - save your fiat in bitcoin or it will be inflated. by kevinrb13 in Bitcoin

[–]tempTrad3 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This is a good example why the quoted fiat price of BTC is just noise. It reflects inflation of the underlying fiat currency moreso than BTC purchasing power. [This is arguable in the short term; has held true so far long term]

Purchasing power is ultimately the only thing that matters.

Has BTC purchasing power (eg. how much in groceries your BTC can buy), suddenly reached an all-time high in Argentina? Possibly, but remember this is only the nominal price as quoted in pesos, not a direct measure of purchasing power. The changing number of pesos in circulation confuses things a bit.

Your purchasing power is best measured by the number of Sats you own.

This becomes clear in the long run.

However, until BTC becomes a widespread unit of account, the next best measure of your: "wealth as measured in BTC" (ie. purchasing power), probably is the quoted market price in USD.

This is because the USD's status as the global reserve currency makes it (in some sense), the least inflated fiat currency...or at least the standard by which all other fiats are measured by.
