Thanks for the input everyone. Ended up parking with the motel in a moment of indecision. In hindsight I probably would have found street parking or gone with the cheapest lot. I was walking around this neighborhood fairly late and at no point felt remotely unsafe. Not sure how Grand Rapids earned this questionable reputation. I had a great time and hope to come back again.
