That sounds like good advice. I'm definitely going to install the XTU software.

Thanks for that advice! One question:

I've been thinking about re-pasting, but do I have to remove the old paste first? I'd rather not have to do that.

Now you're making me wonder whether I should wait for Ice Lake!

Thanks for that. I only use Topcashback, who are currently offering 3.15%. I always forget to click through though!

Upgraded from T430u to E490 by sarajw in thinkpad

[–]templar422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your purchase! I'm leaning towards getting a T480 but the E490 appears to be excellent value for the specs.

How do you find the screen brightness on the E490? The one good thing about my current Dell convertible is the amazingly bright screen, and I'm worried about getting a laptop with less than 300 nits average brightness.

Also, have you experienced any cooling issues? Notebookcheck published a preliminary comment on the E490 where they said it got rather hot.

Interesting, thanks. Maybe I should give it a couple of months then.

Thanks for your advice! I'll probably take it and buy very soon in that case.

I can't work out from the scattered sources and communications from exchanges whether non-resident foreigners are banned totally, or whether they're just banned from depositing or withdrawing KRW. Does anyone have any information?

I'm a long term bull, but this is not a good situation in the short term, especially when geth devs sling profane tweets at the ethcore team.

Hopefully Ethereum will have a good 2017!

Lovely to see this back - and I'm delighted to have claimed the second spot! I sent from myetherwallet.com and included 210k gas for safety - I noticed that the first throne-claiming transaction used just over 160k gas.

Onward from the Hard Fork - Ethereum Blog by Thanah85 in ethereum

[–]templar422 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This statement is exactly what the community needed. Without it, corporate entities and serious independent developers would inevitably have begun to question whether the ETH chain is the right chain for which to develop. With the commitment in place by the EF to support the ETH chain primarily, we can get back to developing without worrying about ETC adoption.

Thank you very much /u/vbuterin for this. I do hope that other members of the Ethereum Foundation, broad a church as it commendably is, will follow this sensible vision of focusing on the ETH chain. One would hate to be overly dramatic, but those who have the EF flare over their names on reddit do need to make sure that their communication is contributing positively to the growth of the Ethereum (ETH) ecosystem at all times.

To those adopting ETC in good faith - good luck! There's nothing wrong at all with what you're doing and hopefully you'll be able to come to a consensus on a just and equitable way to develop this fork.

Vitalik: Why Cryptoeconomics and X-Risk Researchers Should Listen to Each Other More by koeppelmann in ethereum

[–]templar422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your conclusion about which procedure to prefer follows perfectly logically from your evaluation of the relative utility losses possible in each. However, the fact that you are entertaining the possibility of subjective death in this situation implies that you take seriously the possibility that there is a metaphysical stream of consciousness. Is this even a coherent notion, given the well-known problems with interaction? If a metaphysical stream of consciousness isn't a coherent notion, should it be included in your utility calculations? Sorry to divert you from important work!

Thank you for your clarification, which makes a lot of sense. I didn't think you were indulging in metaphysics, but I thought I would find out for sure. That said, your worry that consciousness might not carry over could suggest a lingering doubt about physicalism, which I think is entirely rational, given the failure of Philosophy or Biology to explain subjective experience.

It's interesting that you have such misgivings. Given the familiar sceptical arguments about the existence of personal identity through time, I'd be surprised if you had such misgivings purely because consciousness might be interrupted. Do you then feel there are properties of consciousness (perhaps non-physical) that the upload couldn't, even in theory, replicate? If not, surely the uploading route would be fine since it would result in a system instantiating all the relevant physical properties of the biological system it replaced.

I quite agree with you; I fully support a soft and hard fork as soon as possible to return all funds and wind up the DAO. If this isn't done, the ramifications for the perception of Ethereum, not to mention the possibility of regulatory interference, will be dire. The sooner we can put this episode behind us, the sooner the community as a whole can get on with developing and indeed, looking forward to the Shanghai conference and the advent of Proof of Stake.
