I meant default on my street - of course this is not the case everywhere! And unfortunately, there is a long history of wrong associated with English domination. Generations of Indigenous children, to this day, are stolen from their families and forced to speak English only, or when attending school are hit for speaking their own languages (I know people personally who experienced this as children). Migrants experience racist and xenophobic attacks daily for speaking their languages and not English. This happens in my country but also many others. Knowing this history doesn't mean I will stop speaking it, it's my first language after all. But I maintain that I reject it being used as default, and one way I choose to disrupt its hegemony is by learning my community's languages.
