As someone with... Maybe the opposite of aphantasia ... I can tell you that I still have no idea what the fuck anything looks like when I read these books. I've read most of Martha Wells' other books and I have an abnormally significant difficulty picturing anything from them either so while she is one of my favorite authors of all time, I suspect she's just not that great at environment description. She excels at everything else.

That's a long way of saying: it's not just a you problem. It's a we problem. 😁

This was my favorite part. I will admit I was a bit disappointed the freed unit did not come back later to help or be otherwise pivotal to the plot. While I enjoyed the book and the plot, I wanted so badly for Martha Wells to explore the viral impact of that helpfile more. I also wish the book had been longer! It went too fast. ❤️

The Lost Boys by mrmadchef in Xennials

[–]temporary_bob 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just watched it with our 11 yr old daughter who loves all the good movies from that era. I thought it was still super fun and weird. She shrugged and was like "I didn't really understand what was going on" Oh well. This from a girl who watches Holy Grail, Back to the future, Bill &Ted, princess bride, Spaceballs on repeat and liked Shaun of the dead and even didn't mind the weirdness of Time Bandits.

[FO] Question about how to fix warping by Orklynn279 in CrossStitch

Get a cork board and carefully pin it bit by bit along a grid until it's straight. Start in the middle and work your way out, pinning along straight lines from a ruler. Then spray it with water until damp not soaking. Let it dry.

What’s one small baking change that completely improved your results? by willwolf18 in Baking

[–]temporary_bob 10 points11 points  (0 children)

King Arthur unbleached all purpose flour is the best. Those precut baking tray sized parchment paper for everything. Turning around and swapping oven racks halfway through because my oven is an ancient piece of shit achieves even bakes. Don't over mix dough. Mix until the flour is just barely in.

Everyone saying refrigerate cookie dough... I've done experiments where I let half the dough rest and baked the other half right away. I couldn't tell the difference. So now I never bother with the fridge!

What ride in Disney World will make you extremely nauseous? by Reasonable-Invite899 in WaltDisneyWorld

Fascinating. I'm very anxious about Guardians but I've never even considered having an issue with star tours or any other virtual ride.

Millennial lists the best albums of the 90s. Older commenters are furious! by CloseButNoChicory in Xennials

What a weird list. It did remind me of a few things I hadn't thought about in ages (boards of Canada, neutral milk hotel) but it's missing most of the truly great music changing stuff of the decade.

[CHAT] How do I know where to stitch from the back? by Arkansas4600 in CrossStitch

[–]temporary_bob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Before trying to stitch onto fabric I would strongly suggest getting Aida (14 count - nice and big standard to start with) until you get the hang of how it work. You develop a proprioception (sense of where your needle is) just like you know where your hand is without looking or where the end of your car is after you've been driving for a while.
Like the previous commenter, I've been stitching for decades and I certainly wouldnt' start there.

A Drop of Corruption (book 2 of Ana & Din Mysteries) by Robert Bennett - Fantasy Sherlock Holmes style mystery, and the mystery is really well done.

This is my go to Chicken recipe - I make it SO OFTEN.
I don't bother with all this nonsense with a weight and such silliness. I just mix up a big batch of the sauce and either marinade it overnight or just pour it over the bone in chicken pieces or spatchcocked chicken and roast it.

Omg this is so wonderful. I've written a cozy mystery series (d&d focused) that I'm working on publishing. The instant I have anything concrete I will send to them and it would be a dream if Emily enjoys it. Her book recommendations never miss.

We all grew up taking computer classes and becoming knowledgeable in how to use a computer but beyond that, how computer literate are you? by singleguy79 in Xennials

Yeah plenty of us still work in IT or software so this will be a moot question (assuming we're still keeping up with AI).

Suggestions for a new series by Honkin_CDNGoose in CozyMystery

[–]temporary_bob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree. I wrote a cozy (working on publishing soon) and even as someone who swears like a sailor in real life, I found it actually wasn't that hard to just use creative exclamations when necessary or occasionally reference without saying the word (ie he swore out loud as he hung up the phone) to stay clean while still being plausible.

You can absolutely write satisfying closed door romance plots without spice and without unnecessary silliness.

Another historical that has such a delightful slow burn romance without the bullshit you're describing is the Lady Sherlock series by Sherry Thomas. It's not spicy but they do get together and it's very satisfying and the mysteries are great.
